Symmetric asymmetric and composite perfluoropolymer membranes made with HYFLON AD have been prepared and evaluated. Porous and non porous symmetric membranes have been prepared by solvent evaporation with various processing conditions. Non-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the membrane morphology in air. Analysis of the images gave quantitative imformation on the surface pore strcture in particular on the pore size distributin. Possible useful uses of porous membranes are envisaged in the field of gas-liquid separations such as membrane contactors (MSc) Molecular Dynamics(MD) simulations structure of HYFLON AD 60X copolymer supporting these results are also reported. Amorphous perfluoropolymer membranes appears to be ideal other than in MCs when separation processes have to be performed in hostile environments i.e. high temperatures and aggressive non-aqueous media such as chemicals and solvents. In these cases HYFLON AD mem-branes can exploit the outstanding resistance of perfluoropolymers.

A numerical solution method of the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations is applied for calculating turbulent flows and performances of a marine propeller in open-water, four-quadrant conditions. Computed propeller flows of the model propeller P4381, for which the experimental data of the open-water performances exist, reveal complex viscous-flow characteristics including three-dimensional flow separations in various off-design conditions and also computed propeller thrusts and torques agree quite well with experimental data except some cases for which severe propeller cavitations occurred in the experiment.
Guided-waves-based mortar-filled steel pipe inspection is carried out through using EMAT (Electro magnetic acoustic transducer) and wavelet transform. Possibly existing anomalies such as separation (or void) and inclusion are made in the fabricated mortar-fled steel pipes: these anomalies are infected. Since guided waves have the long range inspection capability, EMAT has its own advantages over the conventional PZT (Piezoelectric zirconate titanate), and wavelet transform gives the multi-resolution on time-frequency domain results, the suggested technique gives an alternative way for inspecting mortar-filled steel pipes, which are popularly used for supporting marine structures such as piers, wharfs, moles, and dolphins. Through this study, it is show that the suggested technique is promising for detecting the amounts of separations and inclusions.
The flowers of Chrysanthemum morifolium (Compositae) were investigated for their biofunctional components. Antioxidant compounds were identified from the flower of Chrysanthemum morifolium, through activity-guided fractionation and repeated column chromatographic separations. The structures of the isolated compounds were characterized as chlorogenic acid (1), luteolin (2) and quercitrin (3) by the analysis of physico-chemical and spectral data. Their antioxidant effects were evaluated by assaying for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity and inhibition of xanthine/xanthine oxidase activity.
A numerical simulation method has been under development for solving turbulent flows around a ship model in maneuvering motion using the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The method used second-order finite differences, collocated grids, pressure-Poisson equation and four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme as key components of the solution method. A modified Baldwin-Lomax model is used for the turbulence closure. This paper presents a preliminary result of the computational study on turbulent flows past a ship model in drift motion. Calculations are carried out for a Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model, for which detailed experimental data are available. The results of the present calculations are compared with the experimental data for hydrodynamic forces acting on the model as well as velocity distributions at longitudinal sections. Only fair agreements has been achieved. The computational results show the complex asymmetrical shear flow patterns including three-dimensional separations followed by formation of bilge vortices both in bow and stern regions.
We now have more than 70 multiple image gravitational lens systems. Since gravitational lensing occurs through gravitational distortions in cosmic space, cosmological informations can be extracted from multiple image systems. Specifically, Hubble constant can be determined by the time delay mea-surement, curvature of the universe can be measured by the distribution of image separations in lens systems, and limits on matter density and cosmological constant can be set by the statistics of gravitationallens systems. Uncertainties, however, still exist in various steps, and results may be taken with some caution. Larger systematic survey and better understanding of galaxy properties would definitely help.

Hypersonic wind tunnel test of the rectangular variable geometry intake is performed. For realization of a Precooled turbojet engine, development of a hypersonic ramjet engine is planned. To investigate performance of the intake of the hypersonic ramjet engine, wind tunnel test is done with freestream Mach number of 5.1. The total pressure recovery was 18 % with 12.9 % of ramp bleed. Several reasons for low total pressure recovery are shown. Supersonic internal compression is not enough. Then, the throat Mach number is high (M2.61) and total pressure losses at the terminal shock is large. Supersonic flow at the throat and position of the terminal shock is sensitive to a difference of the second ramp's throat height and the third ramp's throat height. Flow separations at the second ramp's trailing edge and the third ramp's leading edge are seen those could result in the trigger of unstart. The seal mechanism between the ramps and the sidewalls is important.
The enantiomers of five amino acids (alanine, valine, threonine, leucine and phenylalanine) could be separated by gas chromatography with optically active (S)-5-isopropyll-$N^3$-phenyl-2-thiohydantoinic stationary phase, which prepared from L-valine and phenylisothiocyanate. Gas chromatographic separations on methylesterificated and N-trifluoroacetylated amino acids have been conducted in isothermal at several column temperatures (180~190, 200, $210^{\circ}C$). The separation factors were 1.29 (alanine, $190^{\circ}C$), 1.35 (valine, $190^{\circ}C$), 1.33 (threonine, $190^{\circ}C$), 1.17 (leucine, $190^{\circ}C$) and 1.05 (phenylalanine, $190^{\circ}C$) and D-isomers eluted prior to L-isomers in every instance. The result of this experiment shows that this stationary phase can be used for the separation of the other amino acids enantiomers.

Since Kyoto protocol in 1997, carbon dioxide recovery using membranes has been attended due to its potential applications to recover high purity carbon dioxide with low processing cost. Because carbon dioxide membrane should operate in chemically and thermally severe conditions and requires high permeance, an inorganic membrane is more favorable than a polymeric membrane.(omitted)

Many studies have examined the use of liquid membranes for various processes such as separations of isomers, gas, organic mixtures, and removal of specific ions. It has been reported that liquid membranes show high selectivity. However, it is difficult to apply the liquid membranes to practical industrial processes because of the low stability of the liquid membranes.(omitted)
