  • In this study, we used TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) for the application of water treatment membrane, and observed the change in morphology of separation membrane due to the change of solidification temperature and heat capacity. For manufactured membrane, PVDF and silica with excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance were used, and DOP (dioctyl phthalate), DBP (dibutyl phthalate) were used as the diluent. Using the SEM (scanning electron microscope), the morphology of each different coagulation solutions of heat capacity change was observed. As the heat capacity increased, the crystallization rate of PVDF was decreased and showed large pore. In contrast, It also confirmed that the smaller heat capacity, the faster the crystallization rate and make smaller pores.

  • High permeability, selectivity and stability are the basic properties also required for membrane gas separations. The $CO_2$ separation by liquid membranes has been developed as a new technique to improve the permeability and selectivity of polymeric membranes. Sirkar et al.(1) have atlempted the hollow-fiber contained liquid membrane technique under four different operational modes, and permeation models have been proposed for all modes. Compared to a conventional liquid membrane, the diffusional resistance decreased by the work of Teramoto et al.(2), who referred to a moving liquid membrane. Recently, Shelekhin and Beckman (3) considered the possibility of combining absorption and membrane separation processes in one integrated system called a membrane absorber. Their analysis could be predicted effectively the performance of flat sheet membrane, however, there are restrictions for considering a flow effect. The gas absorption rate is determined by both an interfacial area and a mass transfer coefficient. It can be easily understood that although the mass transfer coefficients in hollow fiber modules are smaller than in conventional contactors, the substantial increase of the interfacial area can result in a more efficient absorber (4). In order to predict a performance in the general system of hollow-fiber membrane absorber, a gas-liquid mass transfor should be investigated inevitably. The influence of liquid velocity on both a mass transfer and a performance will be described, and then compared with experimental results. A present study is attempted to provide the fundamentals for understanding aspects of promising a hollow-fiber membrane absorber.

  • The present work has developed non-electric and delay-type explosive bolt that does not need electric power supply device and has the delay function in the operation. Non-electric power supply system enables separation device system to be minimized. In order to prove the mechanism of the operation, the power of air resistance caused from aviation object used to ignite the initiator. we can be founded from the present work that the changes in the operation load influence directly the ignition of the initiator. The design of non-electric and delay type of explosive bolt is the most suitable for the separation system that is necessary to reduce the velocity of aviation object and safe landing of parachute system.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the microstructure characteristics of electrolyte membrane through XRD, SEM and AC impedance measurement for using in high temperature steam electrolysis(HTE). It was investigated that thermal stability and electric characteristics by sintering condition using dry and wet process, and confirmed growth of particle and density change by sintering temperature. The sintering temperature and behavior had an effect on the relative density of the ceramic and the average grain size. The more amount of dispersant in organic compound increase, the more the density increased. But the binder was shown opposite phenomenon. It was analyzed that electrolyte resistance and electrical characteristics using AC impedance. The electrical properties of YSZ grain boundary changed with the sintering temperature.

  • Micoromorphological alterations of sea-waterlogged woods by marinemicro-oragnisms were investigated by the light and scanning electron microscopy as a part of serial investigations on the shipwrecked materials which were excavated at the sea shore of Wando-Kun, southern coast of Korea in 1984.Deterioration of sea-waterlogged wood by marine microorganisms were varied with the wood species. The degree of deterioration even in the same wood specieswas different according to the part where it was in mud of sea-water. However, the resistance of Torreya nucifera over the marine organisms was marked. Deterioration in cell wall may be classified into three types; thinning of cell wall, separation of secondary wall from compound middle lamella and tunneling of cell wall. Thinning and separation were frequently observed, while the tunneling was rare. Among the wood cell elements of hardwoods, vessel wall was the least deteriorated. The difference degree of degradation of cell wall constituents and the accumulation of inorganic substances in cell lumen indicate that some factors to be considered for the conservation treatment were discussed. The kinds of marine microorganisms invading and/or inhabiting in wrecked wooden ship were also discussed.

  • The concentration of B in steels is important due to its influence on mechanical properties of steel such as hardenability, hot workability, and creep resistance. An analytical method has been developed to determine B in steel samples by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). National Institute of Standard and Technology Standard Reference Material (NIST SRM) 348a was analyzed to validate the analytical method. The steel sample was digested in a centrifuge bottle with addition of aqua regia and $^{10}B$ spike isotope. Sample pH was then adjusted to higher than 10 to precipitate most matrix elements such as Fe, Cr, and Ni. After centrifugation, the supernatant solution was passed through a cation exchange column to enhance the matrix separation efficiency. B recovery efficiency was about 37%, while matrix removal efficiency was higher than 99.9% for major matrix elements. The isotope dilution method was used for quantification and the determined B concentration was in good agreement with the certified value.

  • A study on the characteristics of electric shock in fresh water due to the leakage of submerged electric facility is conducted by using a reduced scale model at a scale of 1:10 in laboratory. Electric potential as a function of distance from leakage source, type of the leakage source, magnitude of the source voltage, submerged depth and diameter of a copper rod electrode is measured. On the basis of safety standard, separation for guarantee of safety is determined by the measured potential. Also supposing that body resistance is 500[$\Omega$], the human reaction was estimated by calculating body current for some shock duration. Thus, in this paper, the hazard of the electric shock is assessed by introducing representative safety factors, body voltage and body current due to leakage source.

  • Introduction : Membranes made from inorganic materials are generally superior to organo-polymeric materials in thermal and mechanical stability, and chemical resistance. Among inorganic materials zeolite is a promising candidate for a high performance membrane because of the unique characteristics of zeolite crystals such as molecular sieving, ion exchange, selective adsorption and catalysis. Although there are many recent reportsl on the preparation of zeolitc membranes and the gas permeation through the membranes, only a limited number of publications deal with pervaporation studies. Recently, we have reported a high pervaporation performance of NaA zeolite membrane for the separation of water/organic liquid mixtures. and of NaY zeolite menlbrane for the separation of methanol/MTBE. Here, preparation of zeolite (LTA, ZSM-5 and FAU) membranes and their permeation properties are discussed.

  • An epoxy coating was designed to give a hydrophobic property on its surface by modifying it with three types of Amino Terminated Polydimethylsiloxane (ATP), and then effects of the modification on the structure, surface hydrophobic tendency, water transport behavior and hence corrosion protectiveness of the modified epoxy coating were examined using FT-IR spectroscopy, hydrothermal cyclic test, and impedance test. The surface of epoxy coating was changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic property due primarily to a phase separation tendency between epoxy and modifier by the modification. The phase separation tendency is more appreciable when modified by ATP with higher molecular weight ATP at higher content. Water transport behavior of the modified epoxy coating decreased more in that with higher hydrophobic surface property. The resistance to localized corrosion of the modified epoxy coated carbon steel was well agreed with its water transport behavior and hydrophobic tendency.

  • In case of a line-to-ground fault at transmission lines, a portion of fault current will flow into the earth through the footings of the faulted tower causing electrical potential rise nearby the faulted tower footings. In this situation, any buried pipelines or structures nearby the faulted tower can be exposed to the electrical stress by earth potential rise. Although many research works has been conducted on this phenomena, there has been no clear answer of the required separation distance between tower footings and neary buried pipeline because of its dependancy on the soil electrical charactersics of the concerned area and the faulted system. In this paper, an analytical formula to calculate the requried sepeartion distance from the faulted tower has been derived.
