Membrane pervaporation processes could have advantages over distillation for separation of water/organics mixtures: a low energy demand and the ability to separate azeotropic mixtures or isomers. Zeolite membranes might show better thermal, mechanical and chemical stabilities than polymer membranes. Water could be effectively separated from water/organic mixtures using the NaA zeolite membrane because of its high hydrophilicity. In this study, water was separated by pervaporation using the NaA zeolite membrane from water/ethanol mixtures. As a mole fraction of ethanol increased, the total permeation flux and the water flux decreased while the separation factor increased, reached a maximum point, and decreased. As an experimental temperature increased, the total permeation flux increased while the separation factor increased at the lower mole fraction of ethanol than 0.8 and it decreased at the higher mole fraction of ethanol than 0.8. The total permeation flux and the separation factor could be maintained constant during the long term experiment longer than 160 hours. It was found that the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized in our study showed better performance on water/ethanol separation than that of a distillation process or PVA polymeric pervaporation membranes.
Separation of fructose from glucose-fructose mixture was studied by utilizing the solubility differences of both sugars in the mixed solvents of water and alcohols with or without the presence of NaCl and $CaCl_2$. Better separation of fructose was obtained in ethanol-water solvent than other solvent-water systems. The addition of NaCl to the ethanol-water solvent system improved the separation factor based on the relative composition of two sugars in the supernatant by twice. The change in feed composition from 50-50 mixture of glucose and fructose resulted in a worse separation factor. It was found in the present studies that the best separation of fructose (fructose 75%, glucose 25%) was achieved when NaCl and ethanol was slowly added to the solution containing 20% water, 40% fructose and 40% glucose to make up the final solution with the parts of ethanol 36 ml, water 4 ml, glucose 8 gm, fructose 8 gm and NaCl 0.25gm.

This study introduced waste water treatment method applied superconductor HGMS(High Gradient Magnetic Separation). HGMS method treat high efficient method for various waste water. we have surveyed superconducting magnetic separation technology and reviewed the status of related industries using applied superconductivity. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system. In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS, it was made clear that the fine para-magnetic particles in the rolling colling wasted water obtained from rolling process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.
Since algae had been issued an environmental problem, water blooms, deepened due to increase of retention water basin in Korea as well as a biomass resource for producing biofuel, this study conducted a series of experiments for Spirulina platensis using the flotation process with micro-bubble. To elevate utilization of collected-algae, this study focused on omitting or minimizing coagulant's doses as changing a cultivation period and condition affected on physical property change of algae. Two coagulants, PAC and Chitosan, were used to test the collecting rate of algae and the result found no difference between two rates. For flotation experiments without adding the coagulant, dried algae weight (passing 14 days after cultivation for 20 days) detected high separation efficiency 98.2 % and it (passing 7 days after long-term cultivation for 28 days) presented good separation efficiency 91.9 %. Chlorophyll's separation efficiency showed a similar tendency with the case of the dried algae weight. In endogeny conditions, a light source and a carbon source were not considerably affected on the flotation separation efficiency. Thus, this study confirms that algae biomass may be collected without the coagulant during the endogeny condition period after enough cultivation time, 3 weeks.
Rejection characteristics of heavy metals by nanofiltration membranes were investigated. Nanofiltration membranes rejected heavy metals much better than chloride, sulfate and TOC, of which concentration in synthetic wastewater was higher than that of heavy metals. To consider rejection characteristics of various metals by nanofiltration membranes, separation coefficient, which is the ratio of the metal permeation rate to the chloride ion or TOC permeation rate, was introduced. In spite of different materials and different nominal salt rejection of nanofiltration membrane used, the separation coefficients of metals were nearly the same. In particular, the separation coefficient of arsenic against chloride ion and TOC was larger than any other separation coefficient of heavy metals. These phenomena were observed in the relationship between the molar conductivity and the separation coefficient for heavy metals.
Oil spill and oily wastewater have now become a serious threat to the freshwater and marine environments. Porous materials with super-hydrophobicity and super-oleophilicity are good candidates for the oil adsorption and oil/water separation. Here, flexible hybrid nanofibrous membrane (FHNM) containing $SiO_2$/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microspheres was prepared by simultaneous electrospinning and electrospraying. The obtained FHNM combined the flexibility of the nanofiber mat and super-hydrophobicity of the microspheres, which could not be achieved by either only electrospinning or only electrospraying. It was found that when the weight ratio between the $SiO_2$ and PVDF reached a critical value, the $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were present on the PVDF microsphere surface, significantly improving the surface roughness and hence the contact angle of the FHNM. Compared with the pure electrospun PVDF nanofiber mat, most of the FHNMs have a higher oil adsorption capacity. The FHNM could separate the oil with water quickly under the gravity and displayed a high efficiency and good reusability for the oil/water separation. More importantly, the FHNM could not only separate the oil with the pure water but also the corrosive solution including the salt, acid and alkali solution.
The crosslinked PVA/PAA membranes developed in our laboratory have been characterized for water-isopropyl alcohol mixture in terms of permeabilities and separation factor. When the feed mixture was 12wt% water, the permeability and the separation factor for PVA/PAA=75/25 membrane show $63g/m^{2}h$ and 1520 at $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. In case of 5wt% water in feed mixture, the permeability for PVA/PAA=75/25 membrane is $56g/m^{2}h$ at 8$0^{\circ}C$ while the separation factor is 1563.
Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.

Oil contained in domestic and industrial wastewater or marine spilled oil gives rise to severe environmental pollution issues such as water pollution and ecosystem destruction. The membrane filtration method as one of representative oil/water separation strategies has technological challenges such as membrane fouling and low separation rate. In this work, we devise a 3D-printed microhydrocyclone for oil/water separation by utilizing a digital lighting processing-based 3D printer. We demonstrate that the 3D-printed microhydrocyclone can effectively separate oil and water phases from oil-in-water emulsion.
