This work investigates the subcritical free-shear prism wake at Re=22,000 by the Koopman analysis using the Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) algorithm. The Koopman model linearized nonlinearities in the stochastic, homogeneous anisotropic turbulent wake, generating temporally orthogonal eigen tuples that carry meaningful, coherent structures. Phenomenological analysis of dominant modes revealed their physical interpretations: Mode 1 renders the mean-field dynamics, Modes 2 describes the roll-up of the Strouhal vortex, Mode 3 describes the Bloor-Gerrard vortex resulting from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability inside shear layers, its superposition onto the Strouhal vortex, and the concurrent flow entrainment, Modes 6 and 10 describe the low-frequency shedding of turbulent separation bubbles (TSBs) and turbulence production, respectively, which contribute to the beating phenomenon in the lift time history and the flapping motion of shear layers, Modes 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 are the relatively trivial harmonic excitations. This work demonstrates the Koopman analysis' ability to provide insights into free-shear flows. Its success in subcritical turbulence also serves as an excellent reference for applications in other nonlinear, stochastic systems.

A solution to the problems of recognizing as one spot or detection failures for complex regions, in which many spots representing proteins are overlapped and saturated, is suggested. The accumulated gradients of each point in complex regions are calculated, and the resulting accumulated gradient image segmented using watershed technique. The suggested solution show better and efficient result than existing method for spot separation, detects more protein spots hidden in the image of 2-dimensional electrophoresis, and expands the scope of prediction.

In this paper, we implemented the surveillance camera system capable of day and night shooting. To this end, it is designed to capture clear images even at night using a CMOS image sensor as well as an IR-LED. In addition, a relatively simple motion detection algorithm was proposed through color model separation. Motions can be detected by extracting only the H channel from the color model, dividing the image into blocks, and then applying the block matching method using the average color value between consecutive frames. When motions are detected during filming, an alarm sounds automatically and a day and night motion detection system is implemented that can capture and save the event screen to a PC.
Pounding of structures may result in considerable damages, to the extent of total failure during severe lateral loading events (e.g., earthquakes and wind). With the new generation of tall buildings in densely occupied locations, wind-induced pounding becomes of higher risk due to such structures' large deflections. This paper aims to develop mathematical formulations to determine the maximum pounding force when two adjacent structures come into contact. The study will first investigate wind-induced pounding forces of two equal-height structures with similar dynamic properties. The wind loads will be extracted from the Large Eddy Simulation models and applied to a Finite Element Method model to determine deflections and pounding forces. A Genetic Algorithm is lastly utilized to optimize fitting parameters used to correlate the maximum pounding force to the governing structural parameters. The results of the wind-induced pounding show that structures with a higher natural frequency will produce lower maximum pounding forces than those of the same structure with a lower natural frequency. In addition, taller structures are more susceptible to stronger pounding forces at closer separation distances. It was also found that the complexity of the mathematical formula from optimization depends on achieving a more accurate mapping for the trained database.

This study investigates the effectiveness of using a plasma actuator for active control of turbulent flow around a finite square cylinder. The primary objective is to analyze the impact of plasma actuators on flow separation and wake region characteristics, which are critical for reducing drag and suppressing vortex-induced vibrations. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) was employed to explore the flow dynamics at various operational parameters, including different actuation frequencies and voltages. The proposed methodology employs a neural network trained using the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm to determine optimal control policies for plasma actuators. This network is integrated with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver for real-time control. Results indicate that this deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based strategy outperforms existing methods in controlling flow, demonstrating robustness and adaptability across various flow conditions, which highlights its potential for practical applications.
We have developed an inversion algorithm for loop-loop electromagnetic (EM) data, based on the localised non-linear or extended Born approximation to the solution of the 2.5D integral equation describing an EM scattering problem. Source and receiver configuration may be horizontal co-planar (HCP) or vertical co-planar (VCP). Both multi-frequency and multi-separation data can be incorporated. Our inversion code runs on a PC platform without heavy computational load. For the sake of stable and high-resolution performance of the inversion, we implemented an algorithm determining an optimum spatially varying Lagrangian multiplier as a function of sensitivity distribution, through parameter resolution matrix and Backus-Gilbert spread function analysis. Considering that the different source-receiver orientation characteristics cause inconsistent sensitivities to the resistivity structure in simultaneous inversion of HCP and VCP data, which affects the stability and resolution of the inversion result, we adapted a weighting scheme based on the variances of misfits between the measured and calculated datasets. The accuracy of the modelling code that we have developed has been proven over the frequency, conductivity, and geometric ranges typically used in a loop-loop EM system through comparison with 2.5D finite-element modelling results. We first applied the inversion to synthetic data, from a model with resistive as well as conductive inhomogeneities embedded in a homogeneous half-space, to validate its performance. Applying the inversion to field data and comparing the result with that of dc resistivity data, we conclude that the newly developed algorithm provides a reasonable image of the subsurface.
Ocean-bottom seismic survey is a seismic acquisition technique which measures data by installing 4-component receiver on the sea floor. It can produce more improved data in quality than any other acquisition techniques. In the ocean-bottom seismic survey, however, the number of receivers is limited due to high cost. Since only a small number of receivers are used for acquisition, ocean-bottom seismic data may suffer from discontinuities of events over traces, which can result in spatial aliasing. In this paper, we implemented Kirchhoff migration using mirror-imaging algorithm to improve the quality of ocean-bottom seismic image. In order to implement the mirror imaging algorithm, the seismograms should be separated into up-going and down-going wavefields and the down-going wavefield should be used for migration. In this paper, we use the P-Z summation method to separate the wavefield. Numerical examples show that the migration results using mirror imaging algorithm have wider illumination than the conventional migration, especially in the shallow layers.

This paper proposes a block-type classification based image binarization for the implementation of the low-power feature extraction algorithm. The proposed method can be implemented with threshold value re-use technique approach when the image divided into $64{\times}64$ macro blocks size and calculating the threshold value for each block type only once. The algorithm is validated based on quantitative results that only a threshold value change rate of up to 9% occurs within the same image/block type. Existing algorithms should compute the threshold value for 64 blocks when the macro block is divided by $64{\times}64$ on the basis of $512{\times}512$ images, but all suggestions can be made only once for best cases where the same block type is printed, and for the remaining 63 blocks, the adaptive threshold calculation can be reduced by only performing a block type classification process. The threshold calculation operation is performed five times when all block types occur, and only the block type separation process can be performed for the remaining 59 blocks, so 93% adaptive threshold calculation operation can be reduced.
In this paper, we suggest an algorithm that allows us to extract the important obbject from motion pictures and then replace the background with arbitrary images. The suggested technique can be used not only for protecting privacy and reducing the size of data to be transferred by removing the background of each frame, but also for replacing the background with user-selected image in video communication systems including mobile phones. Because of the relatively large size of image data, digital image processing usually takes much of the resources like memory and CPU. This can cause trouble especially for mobile video phones which typically have restricted resources. In our experiments, we could reduce the requirements of time and memory for processing the images by restricting the search area to the vicinity of major object's contour found in the previous frame based on the fact that the movement of major object is not wide or rapid in general. Specifically, we detected edges and used the edge image of the initial frame to locate candidate-object areas. Then, on the located areas, we computed the difference image between adjacent frames and used it to determine and trace the major object that might be moving. And then we computed the contour of the major object and used it to separate major object from the background. We could successfully separate major object from the background and replate the background with arbitrary images.
The calculation of phase velocities in Spectral-Analysis -of-Surface -Waves (SASW) meas urements requires unwrapping phase angles. In case of layered systems with strong stiffness contrast like a pavement system, conventional phase unwrapping algorithm to add in teger multiples of 2n to the principal value of a phase angle may lead to wrong phase volocities. This is because there is difficulty in counting the number of jumps in the phase spectrum especially at the receiver spacing where the measurements are in the transition Bone of defferent modes. A new phase interpretation scheme, called "Impulse Response Fil traction ( IRF) Technique," is proposed, which is based on the separation of wave groups by the filtration of the impulse response determinded between two receivers. The separation of a wave group is based on the impulse response filtered by using information from Gabor spectrogram, which visualizes the propagation of wave groups at the frequency -time space. The filtered impulse response leads to clear interpretation of phase spectrum, which eliminates difficulty in counting number of jumps in the phase spectrum. Verification of the IRF technique was performed by theoretical simulation of the SASW measurement on a pavement system which complicates wave propagation.opagation.
