Photochemical Analysis of Ozone Episodes in the Metropolitan Area of Seoul During the Summer 2004 (2004년 여름 서울에서 발생한 고농도 오존 사례의 광화학적 분석)

  • This study examines ozone episodes occurred during the intensive sampling periods (Jun. 1-30, 2004) in the air of Seoul metropolitan area. During that period, there were 8 events (or days) in which 1 hr averaged ozone concentrations were greater than 100 ppbv. The photochemical analysis of ozone chemistry (i.e., budget and formation and destruction strengths of ozone) was carried out using a photochemical box model. Peaks in diurnal ozone variations during ozone episode periods occurred were concurrent with the sudden change of the slope of $NO_{2}/NO$ ratio, suggesting significant correlation with photochemical reactivity. In addition, the ozone peaks were concurrent with high concentrations of ozone precursors, peroxy radicals of $HO_{2},\;CH_{3}O_{2},\;and\;RO_{2}$. High ozone levels during the ozone episodes are likely to be affected by ozone destruction rate.

Exploring Residential Segregation through Spatial Concentration Index - as a case of Seoul Metropolitan Area - (집중지표 기법을 활용한 수도권 주거지 분리에 대한 실증적 접근)

  • In order to solve the problem of how to estimate the residential segregation, the Spatial Concentration Index(SCI) and Location quotient(LQ) are able to be one of alternative methods, and a comprehensive analysis of the residential segregation phenomenon in the seoul metropolitan area is the aim of the study. The results of SCI show that residential concentration areas in low-rent are some Gyeonggi-do's downtown(Bucheon-si, Suwon-si) as well as rural and urban-rural complex outskirts of the metropolitan area. The results of changing of SCI from 2011 to 2014, downward changes appeared thirteen districts and upward changes appeared fourteen districts. Especially downward change district was Sosa-gu, Bucheon-si and upward change district was Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si. In conclusion, that high rent level groups are more concentration on specific area than low rent level groups. By decreasing residential concentration districts in low-rent level group, 'diversity' districts have been increasing in seoul metropolitan but the phenomenon of residential concentration in high and low level group have been being intensified. These results could be confirmed by quantitative through LQ. Methodologically LQ would strengthen the explanatory power of SCI, and ongoing research of SCI in conjunction with other quantitative methods will need.

Analysing the Influence of Regional Characteristics on the Migration of Population in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (수도권 권역별 특성이 인구이동에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of regional characteristics on population movement on the Seoul metropolitan areas. Method: To this end, 66 basic entities in the Seoul metropolitan area were divided into three regions by analyzing the demographic movement data from 2010 to 2016 and the factors for determining population movement within and between regions were identified by applying a stepwise regression technique. Result: The major analysis confirmed that the increase in the number of apartments in all areas of the Seoul metropolitan area, the increase in the number of single-family homes, the increase in the number of employees, the increase in manufacturers, the growth rate of knowledge, culture, and leisure industries, the increase rate of GRDP, and the opening of new subway stations. In particular, the growth rate of the number of apartments, the growth rate of the knowledge, culture and leisure industries, the increase rate of GRDP, and the opening of new subway stations played a positive role in increasing population inflow. Conclusion: The result showed that by region, the growth rate of knowledge, culture and leisure industries contributed greatly to the inflow of population in the first region, and that the opening of new subway stations and the increase of GRDPs were the main factors. The increase in the number of apartments and subway stations were the main factors in the three areas.

Comparative Analysis of the Q Value between the Crust of the Seoul Metropolitan Area and the Eastern Kyeongsang Basin (수도권과 경상 분지 동부 지역 지각의 Q 값 비교 분석)

  • For the Seoul metropolitan area and the eastern Kyeongsang Basin, we simultaneously calculated $Q_P^{-1}$ and $Q_S^{-1}$ by applying the extended coda-normalization method for 98 seismograms of local Earthquakes. As frequency increases from 1.5 Hz to 24 Hz, the result decreased from $(4.0{\pm}9.2){\times}10^{-3}$ to $(4.1{\pm}4.2){\times}10^{-4}$ for $Q_P^{-1}$ and $(5.5{\pm}5.6){\times}10^{-3}$ to $(3.4{\pm}1.3){\times}10^{-4}$ for $Q_S^{-1}$ in Seoul Metropolitan Area. The result of eastern Kyeongsang basin also decreased from $(5.4{\pm}8.8){\times}10^{-3}$ to $(3.7{\pm}3.4){\times}10^{-4}$ for $Q_P^{-1}$ and $(5.7{\pm}4.2){\times}10^{-3}$ to $(3.5{\pm}1.6){\times}10^{-4}$ for $Q_S^{-1}$. If we fit a frequency-dependent power law to the data, the best fits of $Q_P^{-1}$ and $Q_S^{-1}$ are $0.005f^{-0.89}$ and $0.004f^{-0.88}$ in Seoul metropolitan Area, respectively. The value of $Q_P^{-1}$ and $Q_S^{-1}$ in the eastern Kyeongsang basin are $0.007f^{-1.02}$ and $0.006f^{-0.99}$, respectively. The $Q_S^{-1}$ value of the eastern Kyeongsang basin is almost similar to Seoul metropolitan area. But the $Q_P^{-1}$ value of the eastern Kyeongsang basin is a little higher than that of Seoul metropolitan area. This may be that the crustal characteristics of the eastern Kyeongsang basin is seismologically more heterogeneous. However, these $Q_P^{-1}$ values in Korea belong to the range of seismically stable regions all over the world.

  • The KTX has been launched one month ago and people can travel much faster and further. There are two opinions which are the dispersion and the concentration of metropolitan population. These contrary opinions were disputed against each other before launching KTX. The phenomena of metropolitan population concentration socially made many problems as it was already pointed out on many papers. So accurate prediction is very important. Thus, this study will predict how KTX will affect the dispersion of metropolitan population focused on highly populated Seoul-Pusan Railway. It will achieved by comparing and analysing foreign cases.
