Survivability Evaluation Model in Wireless Sensor Network using Software Rejuvenation

  • The previous works in sensor networks security have focused on the aspect of confidentiality, authentication and integrity based on cryptographic primitives. There has been no prior work to assess the survivability in systematic way. Accordingly, this paper presents a survivability model of wireless sensor networks using software rejuvenation for dual adaptive cluster head. The survivability model has state transition to reflect status of real wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we only focus on a survivability model which is capable of describing cluster head compromise in the networks and able to switch over the redundant cluster head in order to increase the survivability of that cluster. Second, this paper presents how to enhance the survivability of sensor networks using software rejuvenation methodology for dual cluster head in wireless sensor network. We model and analyze each cluster as a stochastic process based on Semi Markov Process (SMP) and Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC). The proof of example scenarios and numerical analysis shows the feasibility of our approach.

Communication Pattern Based Key Establishment Scheme in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks

  • In this paper, we propose a symmetric key establishment scheme for wireless sensor networks which tries to minimize the resource usage while satisfying the security requirements. This is accomplished by taking advantage of the communication pattern of wireless sensor networks and adopting heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. By considering the unique communication pattern of wireless sensor networks due to the nature of information gathering from the physical world, the number of keys to be established is minimized and, consequently, the overhead spent for establishing keys decreases. With heterogeneous wireless sensor networks, we can build a hybrid scheme where a small number of powerful nodes do more works than a large number of resource-constrained nodes to provide enhanced security service such as broadcast authentication and reduce the burden of resource-limited nodes. In addition, an on-demand key establishment scheme is introduced to support extra communications and optimize the resource usage. Our performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme is very efficient and highly scalable in terms of storage, communication and computation overhead. Furthermore, our proposed scheme not only satisfies the security requirements but also provides resilience to several attacks.

  • Recent advancement in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has paved the way for WSNs to enable in various environments in monitoring temperature, motion, sound, and vibration. These applications often include the detection of sensitive information from enemy movements in hostile areas or in locations of personnel in buildings. Due to characteristics of WSNs and dealing with sensitive information, wireless sensor nodes tend to be exposed to the enemy or in a hazard area, and security is a major concern in WSNs. Because WSNs pose unique challenges, traditional security techniques used in conventional networks cannot be applied directly, many researchers have developed various security protocols to fit into WSNs. To develop countermeasures of various attacks in WSNs, descriptions and analysis of current security attacks in the network layers must be developed by using a standard notation. However, there is no research paper describing and analyzing security models in WSNs by using a standard notation such as The Unified Modeling Language (UML). Using the UML helps security developers to understand security attacks and design secure WSNs. In this research, we provide standard models for security attacks by UML Sequence Diagrams to describe and analyze possible attacks in the three network layers.

  • 현재 다양한 공격 대응을 위해 효과적이고 효율적인 방법으로 네트워크와 정보시스템의 취약성을 평가하는 일은 매우 중요하게 여겨지고 있다. 그러나 네트워크와 정보시스템의 취약성 및 위험 평가 방법론은 센서 네트워크에 직접 적용하기가 어렵다. 왜냐하면 센서 네트워크는 전통적인 네트워크와 정보시스템과 비교해 다른 특성을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구 논문은 클러스터 기반 센서 네트워크에서의 취약성 평가 프레임워크를 제안하고 있다. 센서 네트워크에서 취약성을 평가하며 몇 가지 케이스를 통해 클러스터 기반 센서 네트워크의 취약성 평가 프레임워크의 실효성을 증명해 보인다.

Grid-Based Key Pre-Distribution in Wireless Sensor Networks

  • In this paper, we introduce a grid-based key pre-distribution scheme in wireless sensor networks, which aims to improve the connectivity and resiliency while maintaining a reasonable overhead. We consider simplification of the key establishment logic and enhancement of the connectivity via plat polynomial assignment on a three-dimensional grid for node allocation and keying material assignment. We demonstrate that our scheme results in improvements via a detailed discussion on the connectivity, resource usage, security features and resiliency. A comparison with other relevant works from the literature along with a demonstrated implementation on typical sensor nodes shows the feasibility of the introduced scheme and its applicability for large networks.

  • 최근 센서를 이용한 장치들의 사용은 증가추세이다. 이런 센서 장치들은 이종무선 센서네트워크 환경에서 최신 기술들과 연관 지어 폭발적으로 증가하고 있다. 이런 환경에서 센서디바이스의 사용은 우리에게 편리함을 제공하기는 하나 여러 형태의 보안위협이 도사리고 있는 실정이다. 무선선서네트워크를 이용하여 원격으로 접속하여 제공받는 서비스에 존재하는 보안위협 중 대부분은 전송되는 정보의 유출과 사용자, 센서, 게이트웨이 사이의 인증에 대한 손실이 대부분이다. 2019년 Chen 등이 이종무선 센서 네트워크에 안전한 사용자 인증 프로토콜을 제안하였다. 그러나 Ryu 등이 제안한 논문에서 그들이 제안 프로토콜은 password guessing attack과 session key attack에 취약하다는 것을 주장하였다. 본 논문은 이전에 제안된 논문의 취약점을 개선하여 더욱 안전하고 효율적인 사용자 인증 프로토콜을 제안하였다.

A Robust Mutual Authentication Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

  • Authentication is an important service in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for an unattended environment. Recently, Das proposed a hash-based authentication protocol for WSNs, which provides more security against the masquerade, stolen-verifier, replay, and guessing attacks and avoids the threat which comes with having many logged-in users with the same login-id. In this paper, we point out one security weakness of Das' protocol in mutual authentication for WSN's preservation between users, gateway-node, and sensor nodes. To remedy the problem, this paper provides a secrecy improvement over Das' protocol to ensure that a legal user can exercise a WSN in an insecure environment. Furthermore, by presenting the comparisons of security, computation and communication costs, and performances with the related protocols, the proposed protocol is shown to be suitable for higher security WSNs.

무선 센서 네트워크에서의 안전한 모바일 쿼리 프로토콜 (Secure Mobile Query in Wireless Sensor Networks)

  • 대규모의 센서 네트워크에서는 고정된 베이스 스테이션에서 데이터를 수집하고 네트워크를 관리하는 것은 센서노드들의 제한된 에너지를 빨리 소진시켜 네트워크의 수명을 단축시키게 되므로 바람직하지 않다. 다른 여러 가지 이유로도 모바일 싱크가 널리 활용되고 있으나, 이러한 모바일 싱크에 대한 안전한 쿼리 프로토콜에 대한 연구는 그다지 많지는 않다. 본 논문에서는 모바일 싱크가 인접 센서노드들과 안전하면서도 효율적인 쿼리 세션을 수행할 수 있는 키관리 및 인증 프로토콜을 제안하고 안전성 및 효율성을 분석한다.

  • Security has become a major concern for many real world applications for wireless sensor networks. Usually, all these approaches are based on well known cryptographic algorithms. At the same time, performance analyses have shown that the applicability of sensor networks strongly depends on effective routing sessions or energy aware wireless communication. Based on our experiments, we provide some analyses and considerations on practical feasibility of such cryptographic algorithms in sensor networks.
