Design of Digital Calibration Circuit of Silicon Pressure Sensors (실리콘 압력 센서의 디지털 보정 회로의 설계)

  • We designed a silicon pressure sensor interface circuit with digital calibration capability. The interface circuit is composed of an analog section and a digital section. The analog section amplifies the weak signal from the sensor and the digital section handles the calibration function and communication function between the chip and outside microcontroller that controls the calibration. The digital section is composed of I2C serial interface, memory, trimming register and controller. The I2C serial interface is optimized to suit the need of on-chip silicon microsensor in terms of number of IO pins and silicon area. The major part of the design is to build a controller circuit that implements the optimized I2C protocol. The designed chip was fabricated through IDEC's MPW. We also made a test board and the test result showed that the chip performs the digital calibration function very well as expected.

Design of SECE Energy Harvest Interface Circuit with High Voltage Comparator for Smart Sensor (고전압 비교기를 적용한 스마트 센서용 SECE 에너지 하베스트 인터페이스 회로 설계)

  • In order to apply a piezoelectric energy harvester to a smart sensor system, an energy harvest interface circuit including an AC-DC rectifier is required. In this paper, we compared the performance of full bridge rectifier, which is a typical energy harvester interface circuit, and synchronous piezoelectric energy harvest interface circuit by using board-level simulation. As a result, the output power of a synchronous electric charge extraction(: SECE) circuit is about four times larger than that of the full bridge rectifier, and there is little load variation. And a high voltage comparator, which is essential for the SECE circuit for the piezoelectric energy harvester with an output voltage of 40V or more, was designed using 0.35 um BCD process. The SECE circuit using the designed high-voltage comparator proved that the output power is 427 % higher than the FBR circuit.

  • Future computer interface was interchanged with person's hands or eyes from traditional mouse. In this research, I developed glove type radio mouse using gyro sensor that is replaced mouse cursor movement with persons's hand movement. Introducing a mobile sensor network technology based on bluetooth, radio mouse connected to computer system wirelessly for overcoming wire mouse's activity restrictions. Also, using USB port interface made be easy to install and to use. Developed glove type radio mouse was confirmed in the possibility of using as well as an input pointing device for presentations or games that needed many kinds of user interaction.

Development of FBG Micro Cone Penetrometer for Layered Soil Detection (다층지반 탐지를 위한 광섬유 마이크로콘의 개발)

  • Various types of micro cone penetrometers have been developed by using strain gages for the layered soil detection. Strain gages, however, are affected by several factors such as temperature, self heating and lead wire length. In this study, micro cone penetrometers with 3~7mm in diameter, are developed by using FBG sensor to overcome the defects of the strain gage, and compensate the effect of temperature during penetration. In order to verifiy the accuracy and reliability of the developed FBG cone, the cone penetration test is performed on the layered soil. The tip resistance of FBG snesor shows excellent sensitivity, and can detect the interface of the layered soils with higher resolution. In addition, the 3mm micro cone penetrometer which is impossible cone diameter by using strain gages presents much higher sensitivity than the 7mm cone penetrometer. This study suggests that FBG sensor is a useful sensor for manufaturing the ultra small sized cone, and effectively detects the interface of the layered soil.

  • Accurate and efficient monitoring of dynamically changing environments is one of the most important requirements for ubiquitous network environments. Ubiquitous computing provides intelligent environments which are aware of spatial conditions and can provide timely and useful information to users or devices. Also, the growth of embedded systems and wireless communication technology has made it possible for sensor network environments to develop on a large scale and at low-cost. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a monitoring system that collects, analyzes, and controls the status information of each sensor, following sensor data extracted from each sensor node. The monitoring system adopts Web technology for the implementation of a simple but efficient user interface that allows an operator to visualize any of the processes, elements, or related information in a convenient graphic form.

  • Measuring instrument module for biosensor activity is developed using CMOS image sensor and sensor network. Most of living organism in water as water flea, fish, etc are frequently used as biological sensor for monitoring the water qualify. The activity of biosensor is changed by the quality of water. The developed measuring instrument module can easily interface to the existing instrument.

  • The aim of this work for 5 years from 1994 is to develop a multi-fingered robot hand and its control system for grasp and manipulation of objects dexterously. Since the robot hand is still being developed, a commercialized robot hand from Barrett Company is utilized to implement a hand controller and control algorithm. For this, VME based motion control and interface boards are developed and multi-sensors such as encoder, force/torque sensor, dynamic sensor and artificial skin sensor are partly developed and employed for the grasping control algorithm. In oder to handle uncertainties such as mechanical idleness and backlash, a fuzzy rule based grasping algorithm is also considered and tested with the developed control system.

  • Commercial video scope use CCD sensor and frame grabber for image capture and A/D interface but application limited by input resolution and high cost. In this paper we introduce portable video scope using CMOS sensor, USB pen and tuner card (low frame grabber) in place of commercial CCD sensor and frame grabber. Our video scope serves as an essential link between advancing commercial technology and research, providing cost effective solutions for educational, engineering and medical applications across an entire spectrum of needs. The software implementation is done using Direct Show in second version after initial trials using First version VFW (video for window), which gave very low frame rate. Our video scope operates on windows 98, ME, XP, 2000. The drawback of our video scope is crossover problem in output images caused due to interpolation, which has to be rectified for more efficient performance.

A Low Dark Current CMOS Image Sensor Pixel with a Photodiode Structure Enclosed by P-well

  • A low dark current CMOS image sensor (CIS) pixel without any process modification is developed. Dark current is mainly generated at the interface region of shallow trench isolation (STI) structure. Proposed pixel reduces the dark current effectively by separating the STI region from the photodiode junction using simple layout modification. Test sensor array that has both proposed and conventional pixels is fabricated using 0.18 m CMOS process and the characteristics of the sensor are measured. The result shows that the dark current of the proposed pixel is 0.93fA/pixel that is two times lower than the conventional design.

  • We are developing a simple low-cost wind velocity sensor based on small microphones. The sensor system consists of 4 microphones covered with specially shaped wind screens, 4 pre-amplifiers that respond to low frequency, and a commercial sound interface with multi channel inputs. In this paper, we first present the principle of the sensor, i.e., technique to successfully suppress the influence of external noise existing in the environment in order to determine the wind velocity and the wind direction from the output from a microphone. Then, we present an application for generating realistic motions of a virtual tree swaying in real wind. Although the current sensor outputs significant leaps in a measured sequence of directions, the interactive animations demonstrate that it is usable for such applications, if we could reduce the leaps to some degree.
