This paper presents a new self-adjoint material sensitivity formulation for optimal designs and inverse problems in the high frequency domain. The proposed method is based on the continuum approach using the augmented Lagrangian method. Using the self-adjoint formulation, there is no need to solve the adjoint system additionally when the goal function is a function of the S-parameter. In addition, the algorithm is more general than most previous approaches because it is independent of specific analysis methods or gridding techniques, thereby enabling the use of commercial EM simulators and various custom solvers. For verification, the method was applied to the several numerical examples of dielectric material reconstruction problems in the high frequency domain, and the results were compared with those calculated using the conventional method.
An extension of TOPMODEL was developed for rainfall-runoff simulation in agricultural watersheds equipped with tile drains. Tile drain functions are incorporated into the framework of TOPMODEL. Nine possible flow generation scenarios are suggested for tile drained watershed and applied in the modeling procedure. In the model development process, the traditional physically based storage approach and a new approach using a transfer function for the simulation of the flow in the unsaturated zone were compared. In order to provide better insight into the simulation process, a regionalized sensitivity analysis was performed to test the performance of the model and to compare the behavior of the transfer function to that of the simple storage related formulation. The results of analysis show good performance of the transfer function approach. Since the rainfall-runoff response pattern tends to vary seasonally, seven events distributed throughout a year were used in the sensitivity analysis to investigate the seasonal variation of the hydrologic characteristics. It is found that the sensitivity of each parameter described by the model are varied seasonally.
The purpose of the present study is the presentation of the appropriate element and shape function in the solution of the neutron diffusion equation in two-dimensional (2D) geometries. To this end, the multigroup neutron diffusion equation is solved using the Galerkin finite element method in both rectangular and hexagonal reactor cores. The spatial discretization of the equation is performed using unstructured triangular and quadrilateral finite elements. Calculations are performed using both linear and quadratic approximations of shape function in the Galerkin finite element method, based on which results are compared. Using the power iteration method, the neutron flux distributions with the corresponding eigenvalue are obtained. The results are then validated against the valid results for IAEA-2D and BIBLIS-2D benchmark problems. To investigate the dependency of the results to the type and number of the elements, and shape function order, a sensitivity analysis of the calculations to the mentioned parameters is performed. It is shown that the triangular elements and second order of the shape function in each element give the best results in comparison to the other states.
Solutions to the problems of structural parameter estimation from modal response using leastsquares minimization of force or displacement residuals are generally sensitive to noise in the response measurements. The sensitivity of the parameter estimates is governed by the physical characteristics of the structure and certain features of the noisy measurements. It has been shown that the regularization method can be used to reduce effects of the measurement noise on the estimation error through adding a regularization function to the parameter estimation objective function. In this paper, we adopt the regularization function as the Euclidean norm of the difference between the values of the currently estimated parameters and the a priori parameter estimates. The effect of the regularization function on the outcome of parameter estimation is determined by a regularization factor. Based on a singular value decomposition of the sensitivity matrix of the structural response, it is shown that the optimal regularization factor is obtained by using the maximum singular value of the sensitivity matrix. This selection exhibits the condition where the effect of the a priori estimates on the solutions to the parameter estimation problem is minimal. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated in comparison with certain algorithms selected from the literature by using a numerical example.

Optimization has been developed to minimize the cost function while satisfying constraints. Nonlinear Programming method is used as a tool for the optimization. Usually, cost and constraint function calculations are required in the engineering applications, but those calculations are extremely expensive. Especially, the function and sensitivity analyses cause a bottleneck in structural optimization which utilizes the Finite Element Method. Also, when the functions are quite noisy, the informations do not carry out proper role in the optimization process. An algorithm called "Second-order Approximation Method" has been proposed to overcome the difficulties recently. The cost and constraint functions are approximated by the second-order Taylor series expansion on a nominal points in the algorithm. An optimal design problem is defined with the approximated functions and the approximated problem is solved by a nonlinear programming numerical algorithm. The solution is included in a candidate point set which is evaluated for a new nominal point. Since the functions are approximated only by the function values, sensitivity informations are not needed. One-dimensional line search is unnecessary due to the fact that the nonlinear algorithm handles the approximated functions. In this research, the method is analyzed and the performance is evaluated. Several mathematical problems are created and some standard engineering problems are selected for the evaluation. Through numerical results, applicabilities of the algorithm to large scale and complex problems are presented.presented.

When the windowed DFT algorithm is applied in harmonic measurements, the problem of initial-phase sensitivity will be encountered, this has an effect on harmonic amplitude accuracy. In this paper, the origin of initial-phase sensitivity is analyzed and the main factors that influence the level of initial-phase sensitivity are demonstrated. A method of reducing initial-phase sensitivity is proposed to increase the stability of harmonic measurements. We found that initial-phase sensitivity is determined by the side lobe peak level of the window functions when synchronous deviation is fixed. In addition, increasing the length of the time recorded can be used to remove initial-phase sensitivity. The correctness and validity of our conclusions have been confirmed through numerical results and field tests.

Previously it has been shown that the all pole systems resulting good time responses can be characterized by so called K-polynomial. The polynomial is defined in terms of the principal characteristic ratio $\alpha_1$ and the generalized time constant $\tau$ . In this paper, Part II presents several sensitivity analyses of such systems with respect to $\alpha_1$ and $\tau$ changes. We first deal with the root sensitivity to the perturbation of $\alpha_1$ . By way of determining the unnormalized function sensitivity, both time response sensitivity and frequency response sensitivity are derived. Finally, the root sensitivity relative to $\tau$ change is also analyzed. These results provide some useful insight and background theory when we select of and l to compose a reference model of which denominator is a K-polynomial, which is illustrated by examples.

This article describes a robust control method by using peak control of a sensitivity function in the state-feedback control systems. This method apparently reduces the peak, and as a result makes closed loop systems more stable. The designed closed loop systems also make the response to an external step disturbance more fast with a lower undershoot. At the conclusion, it is verified that the proposed method enhances robust stability and robust performance to parametric uncertainties through $\mu$-plot.

This study examines the influence of mentoring function on major adaptation of university students in a fashion related department and identifies the moderating role of self-efficacy and mentor competence on the effectiveness of a fashion mentoring function. Questionnaire data were gathered from 266 university students in a fashion related department with previous experience in a mentoring program. The results showed that the psychosocial function, sensitivity developmental function, and the fashion career developmental function had a positive impact on the department adaptation (adaptation for professor and adaptation for learning). In addition, there were moderating effects of self-efficacy on the influence of the fashion career developmental function on professor adaptation and the moderating effects of mentor competence on the influence of the sensitivity developmental function on professor adaptation. The results of this study provide various guidelines for professors or administrators of fashion related departments who are interested in mentoring systems.
