  • Recent globalization and de-industrialization have caused intensive competition among places; hence, cities worldwide are pursuing regeneration and enhanced competitiveness through cultural strategies. Focusing on the cultural strategies of local cities in Japan, this paper reveals that the concept of "being-a-region" is key to cultural strategies, and explores what logic is inherent in such regional developments. Since the period of rapid economic growth, Japanese local cities have played the role of "Furusato(home) for Japanese." With the recent decentralization, "being-a-region" is now emerging as a powerful discourse for the cultural strategies of local cities. This idea of "being-a-region" can be largely defined as a region's special character or even an existential sense of place, but in fact it is political relationships among agencies that define the region. "Being a region" in Japan appears to extend to "being a nation." Thus, it would be necessary to focus on the power relationships that surround the concept of "being a region" when we deal with the meaning of region in relationships to cultural strategies of local cities.

  • The purpose of this study is to comprehensively consider the challenge contents enjoyed based on SNS through the concept of Gamification and MDA framework. Regardless of the top-down and bottom-up divisions, in common, the participants show an active figure leading the creation and enjoyment of contents. As a result of analyzing the challenge contents using the MDA framework, the mechanics of 'relative level', 'challenge with expressive purpose', and 'Paidia rules' were found. This leads to the dynamics of participants who express an inner sense of achievement such as 'selection and competition for better expression' and 'selflessness and superiority', creating an environment where they can continuously participate in the challenge contents. Lastly, looking at the aesthetics of the challenge contents, it can be seen that participants are actively forming a play culture that leads the creation and enjoyment of contents. This phenomenon has resulted in breaking down the hegemony of content creation and distribution, which was the responsibility of society in the field of information transmission and commercial advertising.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the webcasting and television from the perspective of genres. It adopted the niche theory in analyzing them, avoiding simply comparing the collective average of the two media's gratification. As a result, television turned out to expand broader at niche breadth than the Webcasting and thus presented more diverse functions thar the Webcasting. The niche overlap was investigated with the average of overlapping values. The competition between the two media was rather eased in dimensions of education, culture, and entertainment. And in terms of competitive superiority, the music service sector was the only function that the Webcasting had superiority to television. Upon the results, the Webcasting was absolutely inferior to television in a whole sense. But one thing which requires consideration is that the Webcasting will have functional mergers among genres and thus develop different functions from the corresponding ones of television.

  • The purpose of this study is to outline the strategic implications of a structure analysis and trends of transferred air cargoes for the main airports of the North Asian region for 13 years from 2000 to 2012. To do so, it analyses the concentration levels using a Gini coefficient and Hirschmann Herfindahl index and represents the competitive positioning with regard to the main East Asian airports using the BCG framework and shift-share analysis. Currently, the concentration level is getting weaker in response to the emergence of Chinese airports in the north-east region. It is likely that the steady growth of air cargo of Shanghai airport (PVG) has caused the increase in concentration levels in the region. Seoul airport (ICN) may be directly in competition with PVG for air cargo in the region, giving consideration to reducing or maintaining an average increase ratio of air cargoes of ICN, NRT (Tokyo), and KIX (Osaka) for same period. In the same sense, the average increase in ratio for ICN for same period yields 1.3%, which is far behind the 6.2% and 5.2% of the north-east region and PVG respectively. Additionally, shift-share effect analysis indicates that ICN lost 422,180 tons in the north-east region during the same period, suggesting that transferred cargoes might have been forwarded to PVG.

  • The Trans-Central Asian Railway consists of the Trans-Caspian Railroad, the Kazalinsk Route, the Turk-Sib, and the Trans-Kazakhstan Trunk Line. Currently, one-fifth of the residents in Central Asia are living around these railroads on which 70% of the economic activities in the region depends. The construction of the railroads in Central Asia was motivated by the Russian Empire's competition 'with its maritime rival, the United Kingdom, over the Eurasian heartland in a geostrategic sense. Using the railroads, the Russian Empire aspired to connect its central industrial regions in European Russia with the remote frontier areas in the Central Asian republics and to increase economic specialization of the region. After the breakdown of the USSR, however, the rail network, which had well been linked among the regions in the former Soviet nations, has been in a deteriorated linkage with their non-Soviet neighboring nations. Despite a lot of problems to be solved, the Trans-Central Asian rail network is expected to play a crucial role as a land bridge between East Asia and Europe as well as between Russia/the Baltic sea and the Indian Ocean/the Persian Gulf in the long-term.

  • General drug prices involve three stages: shipment stage, wholesaler stage and retail stage. Policies on drug price differ from country to country. Shipment stage prices are tightly regulated in countries like France and Netherlands. They are free in only a minority of advanced countries, even if these include some major players such as the US, Germany and, in a very limited sense, Japan. The situation in the UK is very complex with a semi-free system, where drug companies are free to set their own prices but cannot exceed a predetermined profit ceiling. Mark-up at both wholesaler and retail stages is formally admitted in most countries observed. Apart from the general drug prices, reimbursement price of insured drugs has been major policy concerns. Most countries reviewed in this study has exerted some control over reimbursement prices, but differ both in the way how and in the extent to which prices are admitted or fixed. Price fixing has been used in France and Japan. Some countries have transformed their system over time, particularly to move to reference pricing in the last decade. This mechanism has empowered the customer, and improved price competition on the market. Referring to the drug price policies in the advanced countries, this study makes some suggestions for the redirection of Korean price policy for reimbursement drug in health insurance as follows: to match appropriate policy tools to each policy goal; to maximize market mechanism through effective reimbursement price fixing which admits mark-ups in wholesaler and retail prices; to introduce reference pricing system in order to redirect patient's demand with a financial incentive to choose the best-priced drugs and to save the finance of health insurance; and to strengthen surveillance and monitoring mechanism in the drug market.

  • The whole crisis of human being derived from environmental pollution has changed the human -centered paradigm into the ecological paradigm based on the harmony of human and nature, which have made it inevitable for designers to participate in the environmental problem-solving. In the line of this sense, it is necessary for designers to recognize the social and ethical responsibility for environmental pollution and to change into the designing for environment, not for sale itself. In accord with the context above, the purpose of this study is to suggest some clues for resolving environmental problems with the analysis of design for long-selling product, as we call, product durability analysis. That is, this study is under some assumptions that designing durable product and durable product itself are able to extend a product life cycle, delay a product disusing, reduce a rash development competition for new product among companies, mitigate consumption-oriented attitude of consumers, eliminate a waste of resources, and go far toward the environmental problem solving.

  • While the mobile application market is growing fast, the revenues of the majority apps are declining. Moreover, paid mobile application prices and purchases have been slow because of intensifying competition. However, the conventional studies focused only on the acceptance factor of mobile applications, so they cannot explain the phenomenon such as acceptance resistance for paid mobile applications. Therefore, our study tries to analyze the factors for the acceptance resistance of users for paid mobile applications. The research model in this paper, which is based on S-O-R model, verified through surveys how social influence and app characteristics affect user perception and how user perception affects to app resistance. The results of our study showed that paid mobile applications happened to be destroyed in front of the chasm because of the perceived loss. Consequently, the results implicate that the developers should lower the initial price and actively react to the negative reviews in order to lower the perceived loss. Moreover, the results verified that a sense of self-efficacy can lower application acceptance resistance by including personal properties to our research model as control variables.
