Cheju island is situated at about 90km south of southern most tip of the Korean peninsula. Its shape is an ellips with size of 80$\times$$40km^2$, and it is characterized by a symmetrical form whose peak is Mt. Halla (1950m). Major chemical composition of the rock samples from Manjang gul cave is determined by XRF using the fundamental parameter method consisting of fully auto quantitative analysis, semi quantitative analysis (order estimation) and group quantitative analysis. Judging from chemical composition ($SiO_2=53.07Wt% Fe_2O_3=11.34Wt%, MgO=6.48Wt%, Na_2O=3.07Wt%, K_2O=1.05Wt%$), this rocks may belong to non alkalic basalt. K-Ar ages of two rocks samples from the Manjang gul cave are also determined. The discrepancy of K-Ar ages is found. They are 0.03Ma and 0.42Ma, respectively. This paper describes some problems experienced in dating young volcanic rocks and then discusses chemical composition, X-ray fluorescence analysis and the age of the formation of a lava tunnel such as Manjang gul cave in cheju Island.

This paper explores the conditions and potential of newly designed and tried methodology of big data analysis that apply to Korean history subject matter. In order to advance them, we need to pay more attention to quantitative analysis methodologies over pre-existing qualitative analysis. To obtain our new challenge, I propose 'digital history' methods along with associated disciplines such as linguistics and computer science, data science and statistics, and visualization techniques. As one example, I apply interdisciplinary convergence approaches to the principle and mechanism of elite reproduction during the Korean medieval age. I propose how to compensate for a lack of historical material by applying a semi-supervised learning method, how to create a database that utilizes text-mining techniques, how to analyze quantitative data with statistical methods, and how to indicate analytical outcomes with intuitive visualization.
Semiquantitative analysis by ICP-MS has proven to be a powerful tool for fast screening, in addition, it does not require the element of interest to be present in the calibration standard, making it especially useful for the analysis of unknown samples. In this study, seven cigarette samples were analyzed by the rapid semi-quantitative analysis method based on the ICP-MS. For each cigarette sample, cut tobacco, cigarette paper, filter (before and after smoking), and smoke condensate were analyzed. The accuracy of the analysis technique was evaluated by comparing results obtained from Calibration Check Standard(CCS) and calibration method. Relative Percentage Error(RPE) value of all elements measured for three CCS showed a stable result of less than ${\pm}20%$. Compared to full quantitative analysis by calibration method, the results for cigarette samples showed average error within ${\pm}15%$.
Many materials in engineering exhibit different modulus in tension and compression, which are known as bi-modulus materials. Based on the bi-modulus elastic theory, a modified semi-analytical model, by introducing a stress function, is established in this paper to study the mechanical response of a bi-modulus cylinder placed in an axisymmetric temperature field. Meanwhile, a numerical procedure to calculate the temperature stresses in bi-modulus structures is developed. It is proved that the bi-modulus solution can be degenerated to the classical same modulus solution, and is in great accordance with the solutions calculated by the semi-analytical model proposed by Kamiya (1977) and the numerical solutions calculated both by the procedure complied in this paper and by the finite element software ABAQUS, which demonstrates that the semi-analytical model and the numerical procedure are accurate and reliable. The result shows that the modified semi-analytical model simplifies the calculation process and improves the speed of computation. And the numerical procedure simplifies the modeling process and can be extended to study the stress field of bi-modulus structures with complex geometry and boundary conditions. Besides, the necessity to introduce the bi-modulus theory is discussed and some suggestions for the qualitative analysis and the quantitative calculation of such structure are proposed.
A preliminary experiment was performed to develop a fast, convenient, and economical semi-quantitative method of analyzing amphetamine-like amines from images of derivatives. These were generated from the reaction (in situ, co-spot) of three amphetamine-like compounds with three derivatization reagents on a TLC plate. The attempt was made to optimize the reaction conditions for an efficient derivatization reaction, and TLC images taken by a digital camera were analyzed using two types of image analysis program (CP Atlas 2.0 and ImageJ) for repeatability (RSD, %) and linearity (R2). Then, their results were compared. For efficient derivatization, the reaction conditions needed to be modified. The results of image analysis of each of the samples at two different concentrations (0.5 mg/mL and 0.01 mg/mL) showed that the RSD values for reaction repeatability were in the range of 0.69-5.50%. From the calibration curves between the area of the derivative and the concentration of amines, the R2 values (R2 > 0.9906) for good linear correlation were found to be high, in a concentration range of 0.1-0.005 mg/mL of amines. In addition, the two programs demonstrated little difference in the analysis of repeatability and linearity of the derivatization, so that the current method has the potential to be used for the semi-quantitative analysis of amines.

A probabilistic based systems approach is addressed in this study for the reliability prediction of solid rocket motors (SRM). To achieve this goal, quantitative Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) approach is employed to determine the reliability of components, which are integrated into the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) to obtain the system reliability. The quantitative FMECA is implemented by burden and capability approach when they are available. Otherwise, the semi-quantitative FMECA is taken using the failure rate handbook. Among the many failure modes in the SRM, four most important problems are chosen to illustrate the burden and capability approach, which are the rupture, fracture of the case, and leak due to the jointed bolt and O-ring seal failure. Four algorithms are employed to determine the failure probability of these problems, and compared with those by the Monte Carlo Simulation as well as the commercial code NESSUS for verification. Overall, the study offers a comprehensive treatment of the reliability practice for the SRM development, and may be useful across the wide range of propulsion systems in the aerospace community.

Objective: This study was performed to investigate the expressions of endometriosis related genes in shed endometrial tissues from menstrual blood of patients with or without endometriosis. Methods: The shed endometrial tissues were collected on 2$^{nd}$ or 3$^{rd}$ day of menstrual cycle with Wallace catheter in patients with endometriosis (n=16) and without endometriosis (n=26). The mRNA expressions of twelve kinds of endometriosis related genes were compared between two groups using semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Results: The collected shed endometrium was confirmed by histological observation. Expressions of telomerase, c-kit and aromatase mRNA were not detected by RT-PCR in shed endometrial tissues. The mRNA expressions of apoptosis related genes (fas, fas ligand, bcl-2, bax), stem cell factor, estrogen receptor-$\alpha$/$\alpha$, endometriosis protein-I and secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor gene were similar between shed endometrial tissues with endometriosis and without endometriosis. Conclusion: We could not find the difference of mRNA expressions of tested endometriosis related genes between shed endometrial tissues with or without endometriosis by semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis. It may be related to the dynamical changes of gene expressions in the endometrium with menstrual cycle.
Process safety technology has developed from qualitative methods such as HAZOP (hazard and operability study) to semi-quantitative methods such as LOPA (layer of protection analysis), and quantitative methods are actively studied these days. Quantitative risk assessment (QRA) is often based on fault tree analysis (FTA). FTA is efficient, but difficult to apply when failure events are not independent of each other. This problem can be avoided using a Markov process (MP). MP requires definition of all possible states, and thus, generally, is more complicated than FTA. A method is proposed in this work that uses an MP model and a Weibull distribution model in order to construct a reliability model for multiple dependent failures. As a case study, a pressure safety valve (PSV) is considered, for which there are three kinds of failure, i.e. open failure, close failure, and gas tight failure. According to recently reported inspection results, open failure and close failure are dependent on each other. A reliability model for a PSV group is proposed in this work that is to reproduce these results. It is expected that the application of the proposed method can be expanded to QRA of various systems that have partially dependent multiple failure states.

This paper considers the technological competitiveness of aircraft infra industries that are bases of the aircraft industry development in Korea. We performed focus group interviews to aircraft industry specialists and classified the aircraft infra industries by eight fields: metallurgical assembly, general machinery, precision instruments, materials & parts, communication appliances, computer, semi-conductor/ electronic component, electronics. Through the United States patents analysis for the G7 countries and Korea during 1995-2006, we identified the technological specificities and competences of each country. RTA(Revealed Technology Advantage) index and CII(Current Impact Index) are used to examine the technological specificity and technological competence respectively. Finally, we introduced TCI(Technological Competitiveness Index) which could reflect quantitative level as well as qualitative level of patents for each aircraft infra industry. The results show that Korea has occupied the technological competitiveness in the semi-conductor and electronic component industry out of eight aircraft infra industries, and achieved a competitive edge in communication appliance industry in the mid 2000s.
