Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are self-organized networks that typically consist of thousands of low-cost, low-powered sensor nodes. The reliability and availability of WSNs can be affected by faults, including those from radio interference, battery exhaustion, hardware and software failures, communication link errors, malicious attacks, and so on. Thus, we propose a novel multi-agent fault tolerant system for wireless sensor networks. Since a major requirement of WSNs is to reduce energy consumption, we use multi-agent and mobile agent configurations to manage WSNs that provide energy-efficient services. Mobile agent architecture have inherent advantages in that they provide energy awareness, scalability, reliability, and extensibility. Our multi-agent system consists of a resource manager, a fault tolerance manager and a load balancing manager, and we also propose fault-tolerant protocols that use multi-agent and mobile agent setups.

Owing to miniaturization and low-power electronics, mobile, implanted, and wearable devices have become the main trends of electronics during the past decade. There has been much research regarding energy harvesting to achieve battery-free or self-powered devices. The optimal design problems of a double-pendulum kinetic-energy harvester from human motion are studied in this paper. For the given form factor, the weight of the harvester, and the known human excitation, the optimal design problem is solved using a dynamic non-linear double-pendulum model and an electric generator. The average electrical power was selected as the performance index for the given time period. A double-pendulum harvester was proven to be more efficient than a single-pendulum harvester when the appropriate parameters were used.
Globally, civil infrastructures are deteriorating at an alarming rate caused by overuse, overloading, aging, damage or failure due to natural or man-made hazards. With such a vast network of deteriorating infrastructure, there is a growing interest in continuous monitoring technologies. In order to provide a true distributed sensor and control system for civil structures, we are developing a Structural Nervous System that mimics key attributes of a human nervous system. This nervous system is made up of building blocks that are designed based on mechanoreceptors as a fundamentally new approach for the development of a structural health monitoring and diagnostic system that utilizes the recently developed piezo-fibers capable of sensing and actuation. In particular, our research has been focused on producing a sensory nervous system for civil structures by using piezo-fibers as sensory receptors, nerve fibers, neuronal pools, and spinocervical tract to the nodal and central processing units. This paper presents up to date results of our research, including the design and analysis of the structural nervous system.
An investigation of the sensitivity depletion laws for rhodium SPNDs was performed to reduce the uncertainty of the sensitivity depletion laws used in Combustion Engineering (CE) reactors and to develop calculational tools that provide the sensitivity depletion laws to interpret the signal of the newly designed rhodium SPND into the local neutron flux. The calculational tools developed in this work are computer programs for a time-dependent neutron flux distribution in the rhodium emitter during depletion and for a time-dependent beta escape probability that a beta particle generated in the emitter escapes into the collector. These programs provide the sensitivity depletion laws and show the reduction of the uncertainty by about 1 % compared to that of the method employed by CE in interpreting the signal into the local neutron flux. A reduction in the uncertainty by 1 % in interpreting the signal into the local neutron flux reduces the uncertainty tv about 1 % in interpreting the signal into the local power and lengthens the lifetime of the rhodium SPND by about 10% or more.

The ejector is a device which employs a high-velocity primary motive fluid to entrain and accelerate a slower moving secondary suction fluid. The resulting kinetic energy of the mixture is subsequently used for self-compression to a higher pressure, thus performing the function of a compressor. The outstanding advantages of the ejectors are simplicity and reliability. However the industrial use of ejectors has been confined mainly to very particular cases of operation. The experimental results obtained so far were insufficient to be made use of general cases. Large-sized modern ejectors, mainly driven by high powered air-compressors and designed for very wide ranges of operating conditions, cannot be based on the earlier research results, if we wish to be sure of the final outcome.

Advances in low power design open the possibility to harvest energy from the environment to power electronic circuits. Electrical energy can be harvested from piezoelectric transducer. Piezoelectric materials can be used as mechanisms to transfer mechanical energy usually vibrating system into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power other devices. Micro- to milli-watts power can be generated from vibrating system. We developed definitive and analytical models to predict the power generated from a cantilever beam attached with piezoelectric transducer. Analytical models are pin-force method, enhanced pin-force method and Euler-Bernoulli method. Harmonic oscillations and random noise will be the two different forcing functions used to drive each system. It has been selected the best model for generating electric power based upon the analytical results obtained.

The internet of things (IoT) technology is a key component for the advent of 4th industrial revolution, which is the network of home appliances, infrastructures, and vehicles to remotely investigate these systems. For the operation of compact IoT devices, batteries are widely used as electric power, and the limited lifetime of batteries inevitably leads to periodic replacement. Magneto-mechano-electric (MME) generators may be alternatives to batteries inside the IoT devices by converting stray magnetic field into electric energy, since we are always surrounded by ambient alternating current (AC) magnetic fields induced from electric power transmission lines everywhere. This article reviews the recent domestic research progress in high-performance MME generators and their application field for IoT and electronic devices.

Self-Powered Neutron Detectors(SPNDs) are used to calculate core power distributions, an essential factor in the safe operation of nuclear power plants. Some detectors may fail during normal operation, and signals from failed detectors are isolated from intact signals. The calculated detailed power distribution accuracy depends on the number of available detector signals. Failed detectors decrease the operating margin by enlarging the power distribution measurement error. Therefore, a thorough reconstruction of the failed detector signals is critical. This note suggests a compressive sensing based methodology that rationally reconstructs the readings of failed detectors. The methodology significantly improves reconstruction accuracy by sorting signals and removing high-frequency components from conventional compressive sensing methodology.
Debates about introducing nuclear submarines have been a main issue in Korea. The highest officials and the government has started to think seriously about the issue. Yet there were no certain decision to this issue or any agreements with US but it is still necessary to review about introducing nuclear submarines, the technologies and about the business. The reason for such issues are the highest officials of Korea to build nuclear submarine, nK's nuclear development and SLBM launching. ROKN's nuclear submarine's necessity will be to attack(capacity to revenge), defend(anti-SSBN Operation) and to respond against neighboring nation's threat(Russia, Japan, China). Among these nations, US, Russia (Soviet Union), Britain, France had built their submarines in a short term of time due to their industrial foundation regarding with nuclear propulsion submarines. However China and India have started their business without their industrial foundation prepared and took a long time to build their submarines. Current technology level of Korea have reached almost up to US, Russia, Britain and France when they first built their nuclear propulsion submarines since we have almost completed the business for the Changbogo-I,II and almost up to complete building the Changbogo-III which Korea have self designed/developed. Furthermore Korea have reached the level where we can self design large nuclear reactors and the integrated SMART reactor which we can call ourselves a nation with worldwide technologies. If introducing the nuclear submarine to the Korea gets decided, first of all we would have to review the technological problems and also introduce the foreign technologies when needed. The methods for the introduction will be developments after loans from the foreign, productions with technological cooperations, and individual production. The most significant thing will be that changes are continuous and new instances are keep showing up so that it is important to only have a simple reference to a current instances and have a review on every methods with many possibilities. Also developing all of the technologies for the nuclear propulsion submarines may be not possible and give financial damages so there may be a need to partially introduce foreign technologies. For the introduction of nuclear propulsion submarines, there must be a resolution of the international regulations together with the international/domestics resistances and the technological problems to work out for. Also there may be problem for the requirement fees to solve for and other tough problems to solve for. However nuclear submarines are powerful weapon system to risk everything above. This is an international/domestically a serious agenda. Therefore rather than having debates based on false facts, there must be a need to have an investigations and debates regarding the nation's benefits and national security.

Composite-based piezoelectric devices are extensively studied to develop sustainable power supply and self-powered devices owing to their excellent mechanical durability and output performance. In this study, we design a lead-free piezoelectric nanocomposite utilizing (Ba0.85 Ca0.15)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 (BCTZ) nanomaterials for realizing highly flexible energy harvesters. To improve the output performance of the devices, we incorporate porous BCTZ nanowires (NWs) into the nanoparticle (NP)-based piezoelectric nanocomposite. BCTZ NPs and NWs are synthesized through the solid-state reaction and sol-gel-based electrospinning, respectively; subsequently, they are dispersed inside a polyimide matrix. The output performance of the energy harvesters is measured using an optimized measurement system during repetitive mechanical deformation by varying the composition of the NPs and NWs. A nanocomposite-based energy harvester with 4:1 weight ratio generates the maximum open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of 0.83 V and 0.28 ㎂, respectively. In this study, self-powered devices are constructed with enhanced output performance by using piezoelectric energy harvesting for application in flexible and wearable devices.
