The secondary purpose was to examine whether there were significant relational differences according to child's sex. 272 dyads consisting of fifth and sixth grade children in elementary school and their measured by the Self-Esteem Inventory (for children), the Self-Esteem Scale (for fathers), and the Iowa Parent Behavior Inventory: Father form. Pearson's r., F-test, and Ducan's multiple range test were used for data analysis. Paternal self-esteem was significantly associated with 'parental involvement', 'reasoning guidance', and 'intimacy'. Paternal self-esteem was positively correlated with girl's self-esteem. Child's self-esteem was positively related to 'parental involvement', 'limit setting', 'responsiveness', 'reasoning guidance' and 'intimacy'. • This study investigated child's self-esteem by the mediational role of mother's parenting self-efficacy and its relations to perceived social support, parenting behavior, and stress, and to child's temperament and gender. Participants were 403 Korean children(188 boys, 215 girls) and their mothers living in Seoul. Structural equation modeling for boys and girls and their mothers indicated that parenting self-efficacy mediated the relation between social support and parenting behaviors including Warmth-Acceptance and Rejection-Restriction. In these models, parenting self-efficacy related to child's self-esteem through parenting behavior. Child's temperament related to self-esteem directly in three parenting behavior models. In Permissiveness-Nonintervention, parenting self-efficacy mediated between social support and self-esteem in both boy's and girl's models, between child's temperament and self-esteem in only boy's model.

  • Purpose: The Essential Surgical Procedures in Trauma (ESPIT) course was developed as a model to teach necessary surgical procedures to trauma physicians. Its goals are to improve knowledge, self-confidence, and technical competence. Methods: The ESPIT course consisted of five lectures and a porcine lab operative experience. The ESPIT course has been run seven times between February 2014 and April 2016. ESPIT participants completed a questionnaire to assess self-efficacy regarding essential surgical procedures in trauma before and immediately after taking the ESPIT course. Sixty-three participants who completed both pre- and post-course questionnaires on self-efficacy were enrolled in this study. Results: The overall post-ESPIT mean self-efficacy score was higher than the pre-ESPIT mean self-efficacy score ($8.3{\pm}1.30$ and $4.5{\pm}2.13$, respectively) (p<0.001). Self-efficacy was significantly improved after the ESPIT course in general surgeons (p<0.001), thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons (p<0.001), emergency medicine doctors, and others (neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons) (p<0.001). The differences in self-efficacy score according to career stage (<1 year, 1-3 years, 3-5 years, and >5 years) were also statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusions: The data of the ESPIT participants indicated that they felt that the ESPIT course improved their self-efficacy with regard to essential surgical procedures in trauma. The ESPIT course may be an effective strategy for teaching surgical procedures, thus promoting better management of traumatic injuries.

  • The present study examined the relationships among maternal attachment, self-concept, peer relationship, and school adjustment. The subjects were 293 Korean-Chinese elementary school students living in Yanji and Shenyang, China. The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987), Social Competence Inventory(Doh & Falbo, 1999), and Self-Perception Profile for Adolesents(Harter, 1988) were used to measure the subjects' maternal attachment, and peer relationship, school adjustment, and self-concept, respectively. When structural equation modeling was applied, the results supported not only the model that maternal attachment and self-concept exert an influence on peer relationship, but also the model that they exert an influence on school adjustment. The results of this study suggest that the secure maternal attachment of Korean-Chinese works as an important mechanism that explains their peer relationship and adjustment at elementary school.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the prevalence of peer harassment in preschool children and assess its influence on self-concept, hyperactivity, and behavioral problems. The participants were 4 and 5 year old children recruited from preschools and day care centers. Results indicated that a small group of children were identified as victims by self and teacher-reports. Negative self-concept and hyperactivity predicted self-reported victimization. In addition, hyperactivity, internalizing, and externalizing problems were significant contributors in teacher reported victimization.
