An immunosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) onto a protein G layer by Self-assembly technique was developed for detection of Legionella pneumophila. The protein G layer by self-assembly technique was fabricated on a gold (Au) surface by adsorbing the 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) and an activation process for the chemical binding of the free amino (-NH$_2$) of protein G and 11-(MUA) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDAC) in series. The formation of the protein G layer by self-assembly technique on the Au Substrate and the binding of the antibody and antigen in series were confirmed by SPR spectroscopy. The Surface topographies of the fabricated thin films on an Au substrate were also analyzed by using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Consequently, an immunosensor for the detection of L. pneumophila using SPR was developed with a detection limit of up to 10$^2$CFU per mL.
The transfer assembly (or transfer printing) technique is a promising method for fabricating multi-scale structures on various substrates including semiconductors and polymers, and has been applied to fabrication of flexible devices with superior performance to conventional organic flexible devices. The mechanical behaviors of the structures fabricated by the transfer assembly is a very important information for design and reliability evaluation purpose, but the measurement of the behaviors is difficult since their critical-dimensions are very tiny. In this study, Au films with nano-scale thickness were fabricated on a silicon substrate and their mechanical properties were measured using micro-tensile test. The Au films on the silicon substrate were then transferred to a PDMS substrate using the transfer assembly technique. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with a thiol group was used to enhance the transfer of Au films, and the mechanical behaviors were characterized using wrinkle-based test. The test results from micro-tensile and wrinkle-based test are compared to each other, and their implication to the transfer assembly technique is discussed.

We have demonstrated a fluidic technique for self-assembly of microfabricated parts onto substrate using patterned shapes of magnetic force self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The metal particles and the array were fabricated using the micromachining technique. The metal particles were in a multilayer structure (Au, Ti, and Ni). Sidewalls of patterned Ni dots on the array were covered by thick negative photoresist (SU-8), and the array was magnetized. The array and the particles were mixed in buffer solution, and were arranged by magnetic force interaction. Binding direction of the metal particle onto Ni dots was controlled by multilayer structure and direction of magnetization. A quarter of total Ni dots were covered by the particles. The binding direction of the particles was controllable, and condition of particles was almost even with the Au surface on top. The particles were successfully arranged on the array.
We have used the random fluidic self-assembly (RFSA) technique based on the chip pattern of hydrophobic self-assembly layers to assemble microfabricated particles onto the chip pattern. Immobilization of DNA, fabrication of the particles and the chip pattern, arrangement of the particles on the chip pattern, and recognition of each using DNA fluorescence measurement were carried out. Establishing the walls, the arrangement stability of the particles was improved. Each DNA is able to distinguish by using the lithography process on the particles. Advantages of this method are process simplicity, wide applicability and stability. It is thought that this method can be applicable as a new fabrication technology to develop a minute integration type biosensor microarray.
Crystallization has become the most popular technique for the separation of enantiomers since the Pasteur's discovery. To investigate mechanism of crystallization of chiral molecules, it is necessary to study self-assembled structures on two-dimensional surface. Here, we have studied two-dimensional self-assembled structures of an unnatural amino acid, (S)-${\beta}$-methyl naphthalen-1-${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (${\gamma}^2$-1-naphthylalanine) on Au(111) surface at 150 K using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). At initial stage, we found two chiral honeycomb structures which are counter-clockwise and clockwise configurations in one domain. The molecules are arranged around molecular vacancies, dark hole. By further increasing the amounts of adsorbed ${\gamma}^2$-1-naphthylalanine, a well-ordered square packed structure was observed. In addition, we found the other structure that molecules were trapped in the pore of the hexagonal molecular assembly.

Field emission from single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) aligned on a patterned gold surface is reported. The SWNTs emitters were prepared at room temperature by a self-assembly monolayer technique. SWNTs were cut into sub-micron length by sonication in an acidic solution. Cut SWNTs were attached on the gold surface by the reaction between the thiol groups and the gold surface. The field emission measurement showed that the turn-on field was 4.8 $V/{\mu}m$ at the emission current density of 10 ${\mu}A/cm^2$. The current density was 0.5 $mA/cm^2$ at 6.6 $V/{\mu}m$. This approach provides a novel route for fabricating CNT-based field emission displays.
The electrostatic layer-by-layer technique provides a convenient way to control the construction of ultrathin films at nano-scale ranges and can be easily obtained. It can be also applicable to fiber substrate with dye compounds. We have fabricated multilayer dye films using diazonium resin and three couplers, which are prepared by self-assembly approach. This method is based on layer-by-layer deposition using electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Beside, the diazo coupling reaction proceeded to form azo dye layer on the PET fibers the same time. The corresponding results of the multilayer films have been discussed on the level of color strength (K/S).

We have developed magnetically controllable gold nanoparticles by synthesizing superparamagnetic $Fe_3O_4$ core/gold shell nanoparticles. The core/shell particles have the capability of forming gold 1D chains in the presence of an external magnetic field. Here we demonstrate dynamic and reversible self-assembly of the gold 1D chain structures in an aqueous solution without any templates or physical or chemical attachment. The spatial configuration of gold chains can be arbitrarily manipulated by controlling the direction of a magnetic field. This technique can provide arbitrary manipulation of gold 1D chains for fabrication purpose. To demonstrate this capability, we present a technique for immobilization of the gold particle chains on a glass substrate.
