  • PURPOSE. Plasma activation of hydrophobic zirconia surfaces might be suitable to improve the bond strength of luting materials. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of nonthermal argon-plasma on the shear bond strength (SBS) between zirconia and different combinations of 10-MDP adhesive systems and luting composites after artificial aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two hundred forty Y-TZP specimens were ground automatically with $165{\mu}m$ grit and water cooling. Half of the specimens received surface activation with nonthermal argon-plasma. The specimens were evenly distributed into three groups according to the adhesive systems ([Futurabond U, Futurabond M, Futurabond M + DCA], VOCO GmbH, Germany, Cuxhaven) and into further two subgroups according to the luting materials ([Bifix SE, Bifix QM], VOCO GmbH). Each specimen underwent artificial aging by thermocycling and water storage. SBS was measured in a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and $Scheff{\grave{e}}$ procedure with the level of significance set to 0.05. RESULTS. Surface activation with nonthermal plasma did not improve the bond strength between zirconia and the tested combinations of adhesive systems and luting materials. The plasma-activation trended to reveal higher bond strength if the self-etch luting material (Bifix SE) was used, irrespective of the adhesive system. CONCLUSION. Plasma-activation seems to be suitable to improve bond strength between zirconia and self-etch resin materials. However, further research is necessary to identify the influence of varying plasma-parameters.

  • With the increase of esthetic demands, most patients want to have restorations which are not only functional but also esthetic. For the esthetic restoration, many ceramic systems have been introduced and applied in dentistry. Among those ceramic restorations, IPS e.max system composed of lithium disilicate glass ceramic is one of the most commonly used systems because it has strength and esthetic characteristics. IPS e.max system is divided into IPS e.max Press and IPS e.max CAD according to the manufacturing methods. IPS e.max Press is fabricated through heat-pressed technique with ceramic ingot, which is very simple. The restorations which are made using IPS e.max system can apply to 3 units restoration for the anterior teeth and premolar, and single posterior tooth restoration. Cementation is one of the most important clinic procedure for the longevity of the restorations. All ceramics are bonded by resin cements, it is classified into three groups including adhesive, self-adhesive, and conventional. Variolink N, which is an adhesive resin cement and manufactured by same company with IPS e.max, is recommended for the bonding of IPS e.max restoration. Conventional and self-adhesive resin cement is also available. The aim of this review article is to provide the understanding of material properties, production procedure and clinical application of IPS e.max system.

  • The bond strength is one of the most important factor in establishing long-term success of esthetic restorative dentistry. So, various restorative materials have been introduced to improve the esthetic and physical properties. Ormocer (organically modified ceramic) was developed as a result of such efforts. This study was performed to compare the shear bond strength of ormocer based adhesive with that of existing dentin adhesive. In this study $Admira^{(R)}$ and $Admira^{(R)}$ bond of the ormocer system are grouped together for ADM, Single $Bond^{(R)}$ which is an one-bottle adhesive and Z-250TM which is hybrid composite resin of BIS-GMA system for SIN, and $Definite^{(R)}$ of ormocer and Etch & $Prime^{(R)}$ 3.0 which is a self etching priming/ bonding agent for ETC. The results of this study were as follows. : (1) In the comparison of shear bond strength according to different adhesive system, shear bond strength was increased in the order of ETC group, SIN group, ADM group. There was no significant difference between ADM group and SIN group. However, there was a significant level of difference between ADM and ETC groups as well as SIN and ETC groups( p<0.05). (2) Examination by a scanning electron microscope showed a well established hybrid layer and resin tag in both ADM group and SIN group, while ETC group showed a minimal formation of the hybrid layer when compared with ADM and SIN groups. From the above results, it may be reasonable to start the clinical application of ormocer system, and it is recommended that ormocer system should be used along with an ormocer based adhesive because ormocer system showed the lower shear bond strength when it used with other existing self etching priming/bonding agent. The self etching priming/bonding agent showed relatively low shear bond strength, and it is considered that the further study should be needed.

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the tensile strength of resin-infiltrated demineralized dentin according to the demineralization time, and to evaluate the tensile strength of hybrid layer that is formed by infiltrating different priming adhesives or primer/adhesive into demineralizd dentin matrix. Seventy five hour-glass shaped dentin specimens were prepared in mid-coronal dentin from extracted human molars. Thirty specimens were distributed into three groups according to demineralization time - 2 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours. Each specimen was placed in primer/adhesive of All-Bond 2 for 5 hours of infiltration. Another forty-five specimens of them were demineralized in 37% phosphoric acid for 4 hours. They were randomly assigned to three experimental groups - AB, SB and OS - to designate All-Bond 2, Single Bond and One-Step. Each specimen was placed in one of three different adhesives for 5 hours of infiltration. The specimens were visible light-cured for 5 minutes, and then stored for 24 hours in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$. After that, microtensile bond strength for each specimen was measured, and the fractured surfaces were then observed by SEM. The data were statistically analysed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test and Bonferroni's multiple comparison test. The results were as follows; 1. Tensile strength of the group demineralized for 4 hours was significantly higher than that of groups demineralized for 2 hours and 8 hours (P < .01). 3. Tensile strength of the AB group was significantly higher than that of the SB group and OS group (P < .01).

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of intraradicular moisture on the pushout bond strength of a fibre post luted with several self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods: Endodontically treated root canals were treated with one of three luting cements: (1) RelyX U100, (2) Clearfil SA, and (3) G-Cem. Roots were then divided into four subgroups according to the moisture condition tested: (I) dry: excess water removed with paper points followed by dehydration with 95% ethanol, (II) normal moisture: canals blot-dried with paper points until appearing dry, (III) moist: canals dried by low vacuum using a Luer adapter, and (IV) wet: canals remained totally flooded. Two 1-mm-thick slices were obtained from each root sample and bond strength was measured using a push-out test setup. The data were analysed using a two-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test with p = 0.05. Results: Statistical analysis demonstrated that moisture levels had a significant effect on the bond strength of luting cements (p < 0.05), with the exception of G-Cem. RelyX U100 displayed the highest bond strength under moist conditions (III). Clearfil SA had the highest bond strength under normal moisture conditions (II). Statistical ranking of bond strength values was as follows: RelyX U100 > Clearfil SA > G-Cem. Conclusions: The degree of residual moisture significantly affected the adhesion of luting cements to radicular dentine.
