  • The production of hyper-realistic digital rendering images has been available due to radical improvements of recent digital rendering and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) software technologies. The photorealism of digital architectural rendering images requires further studies and discussions in that architectural visualization becomes a foundation of other fields using digital rendering technology, such as movies, games, and VR industry. The principles for achieving photorealism on digital architectural rendering images were re-defined and detailed elements were analyzed through theoretical analysis of the former studies. Four principles were drawn from the architectural rendering images produced by newly-developed technologies: physically-accurate lighting calculations, accurate object geometry representation, realistic material and texture, and characteristics of photography. The sub-elements of those four principles are categorized into either essential or selective for photorealistic imagery and the randomness of the selective elements could explain the variety of photorealistic architectural rendering styles.

  • Stereoscopic Images provide depth information with the relative distances between the objects in the images. There are many different ways to extract disparity maps from the visible spectral images. For the infrared spectral range, the same approach cannot be utilized for the innate low resolution and colorless features because typical methods require corresponding features between the images. The authors suggest a new approach that makes use of image segmentation to obtain depth information for stereoscopic millimeter-wave images. For image segmentation a selective visual attention model based on the theory of a feature-integration of attention is used. Experimental results show the proposed method provides reasonable depth information for object shape recognition and display.

  • Several works help make sliding window object detection fast, nevertheless, computational demands remain prohibitive for numerous applications. This paper proposes a fast object detection method based on three strategies: cascade classifier, selective window search and fast feature extraction. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the compared methods and achieves both high detection precision and low computation cost. Our approach runs at 17ms per frame on 640×480 images while attaining state-of-the-art accuracy.

  • By using a selective learnable self-organizing feature map(SOFM) a more practical and generalized mehtod is proposed in which the effective nonlinear shape restoration is possible regardless of the existence of the distortion modelss. Nonlinear mapping relation is extracted from the distorted imate by using the proposed selective learning SOFGM which has the special property of effectively creating spatially organized internal representations and nonlinear relations of various input signals. For the exact extraction of the mapping relations between the distorted image and the original one, we define a disparity index as a proximal nmeasure of the present state to the final idealy trained state of the SOFM, and we used this index to adjust the training of the mapping relations form the weights of the SOFM. Simulations are conducted on various kinds of distorted images with or without distortion models, and the results show that the proposed method is very efficeint very efficient and practical in nonlinear shape restorations.

  • In this paper,we propose a novel technoque of improving volume rendering quality and speed by integrating volume data and global shape information together. The selective volume rendering method is to generate distance transformed volume using a distance transform to determine the minimum distance to the neaest intercsting part and then render it. The shape information prevents from object occlusions come from similar intensity of each object. Thus it provides effective visual results that enable to get a clear understanding of complex structures. We show the results of selective volume rendering method for left ventricle and right ventricle ans well as the results of selective sampling methods depending on the interpolation from EBCT cardiac images. Our method offers an accelerated technique to accurately visuahze the surfaces of devined objects segmented from the volume.

  • Biometric-based authentication can provide strong security guarantee about the identity of users. However, security of biometric data is particularly important as the compromise of the data will be permanent. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient protocol to transmit fingerprint images from a fingerprint sensor to a client by exploiting characteristics of fingerprint images. Because the fingerprint sensor is computationally limited, however, such encryption algorithm may not be applied to the full fingerprint images in real-time. To reduce the computational workload on the resource-constrained sensor, we apply the encryption algorithm to a specific bitplane of each pixel of the fingerprint image. We use the LSB as specific bitplane instead of MSB used to encrypt general multimedia contents because simple attacks can reveal the fingerprint ridge information even from the MSB-based encryption. Based on the experimental results, our proposed algorithm can reduce the execution time of the full encryption by a factor of six and guarantee both the integrity and the confidentiality without any leakage of the ridge information.

  • In this paper, we propose a new free-view three-dimensional (3D) computational reconstruction of integral imaging to improve the visual quality of reconstructed 3D images when low-resolution elemental images are used. In a conventional free-view reconstruction, the visual quality of the reconstructed 3D images is insufficient to provide 3D information to applications because of the shift and sum process. In addition, its processing speed is slow. To solve these problems, our proposed method uses a pixel rearrangement technique (PERT) with locally selective elemental images. In general, PERT can reconstruct 3D images with a high visual quality at a fast processing speed. However, PERT cannot provide a free-view reconstruction. Therefore, using our proposed method, free-view reconstructed 3D images with high visual qualities can be generated when low-resolution elemental images are used. To show the feasibility of our proposed method, we applied it to optical experiments.

Abstract In this paper we propose a skew estimation algorithm for English and Korean document images. The proposed method adopts a selective attention strategy, in which we choose a region of interest which contains a cluster of text components and then apply a Hough transform to this region. The skew estimation process consists of two steps. In the coarse step, we divide the entire image into several regions, and compute the skew angle of each region by accumulating the slopes of lines connecting any two components in the region. The skew angle is estimated within the range of $\pm$45 degree with a maximum error of $\pm$1 degree. Next we select a region which has the most frequent slope in the accumulators and determine the skew angle of the image roughly as the angle corresponding to the most frequent slope. In the refine step, a Hough transform is applied for the selected region within the range of $\pm$1 degree along the angle computed from the coarse step, with an angular resolution of 0.1 degree. Based on this selective attention strategy, we can minimize the time cost and maximize the accuracy of the skew estimation. We have measured the performance of the proposed method by an experiment with 2,016 images of various English and Korean documents. The average run time is 0.19 second on a Pentium 200MHz PC, and the average error is $\pm$0.08 degree. We also have proven the superiority of our algorithm by comparing the performance with that of other well-known methods in the literature.

  • The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the effects of focal spot size of X-ray tube on sharpness of clinical radiographic images of dogs and cats. Radiographic images of 24 stifle joints, 15 carpi, 18 lumbar spines, 61 thoraxes, and 47 abdomens of 102 dogs and 4 cats were obtained in the present study, using 2 X-ray tubes with nominal focal spots of 2.0 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. The sharpness of specific anatomical structures in all the images of 5 projections was assessed. The radiographic sharpness of various anatomical structures of lumbar spine and cortex of stifle with fine focal spot was increased significantly compared with broad focal spot images. In addition, the blurred motion was significantly higher in the fine focal spot images of thorax. In conclusion, our study suggests that a selective use of fine foci for imaging of lumbar spine or cortex of stifle enhanced radiographic sharpness.
