A numerous oil slicks of natural origin were revealed in the southwest (SW) part of Caspian Sea by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by Envisat satellite in 2003-2004. On the basis of computer processing, visual analysis of SAR images and comparisons with bathymetry, geophysical and seismic data in geographic information system (GIS), a link between these slicks and unloading of liquid hydrocarbons in the SW Caspian is established. Oil slicks are basically concentrated above domes of local geological formations of the sedimentary cover. In total more than 90 seeps and mud volcanoes having a repeating regime and representing an active type were identified; they are distributed across the SW Azerbaijan and West Iranian sectors. Periodical occurrence of slicks can reflect alternation of mud volcanism pulses forced by intensive seismicity with the quiet periods. Seepage rate of oil in the SW part of the Caspian Sea according to SAR images is estimated to be up to 16,000 metric tons per year. The importance of unloading of oils on hydrochemistry and ecological conditions of the Caspian Sea is demonstrated. Conclusion is done that the Envisat SAR to be an excellent tool for studying oil seeps through observation oil slicks floating on the sea surface.
The local earthquake data, observed by Wiechert seismograph in Korea during Feb. 1926-May 1943, was provided and investigated. Using S-P monogram of JMA, mainly Tsuboi's formula and additional intensity data, the earthquake parameters are obtained as much as possible within a reasonable discrepancy. The seismic characteristics as to the epicenter distribution was discussed under the viewpoint of its relation to the adjacent geologic structure. Some statistical results are analyzed comparing with Kyushu region which provide a reasonable interpretation on the seismicity of Korea. By superposing the available information of the individual events, the general trend of stress field was found to be east-west compression, which mostly agree with that of the southwestern Japan.

This paper proposes potentialities of constructing the information system for earthquake hazard management which can manage and analyse earthquake risk and hazard systematically. The experimental results as well as architectural structure investment data for seismicity assessment are built in database and connected with GIS for assessing earthquake safety of building in urban area. For earthquake-resistant performance assessment, we collected and classified building structural data according to assessment criteria using building register, architectural map, digital map, and then complemented database with field survey data. We also suggest GIS-based information system can cope with and manage earthquake hazard effectively, as evaluating earthquake risk by performing detailed earthquake-resistant assessment and determining final assessment scores. The assessment should be processed quickly and accurately by integrating the earthquake hazard information management system with modularization of assessment procedure and method in the future.

Focal mechanism of the real and imaginary faults in the western coast of Japan has been assumed by examining the previous studies on the seismicity, seismic gap, fault behaviors, seismic zoning, and faults. In the area of no seismic information, the focal mechanism has been assumed to have the maximum influence on the tsunami height in the eastern coast of Korea. The tsunami height in a particular point of the eastern coast of Korea can vary up to 7 orders with the variation of the strike of the fault in a particular source point of the western coast of Japan with constant magnitude. Tsunami scenario DB including tile arrival times and tsunami heights has been constructing by using the assumed focal mechanism of the western coast of Japan. Tsunami warning system will be reinforced by using this tsunami scenario DB near future.

The current Korean criteria for seismic performance evaluated by dynamic analysis regulates that the horizontal displacement and vertical settlement of a dam body, including the static deformation, should be within 1% of the dam height. However, there has been weak theoretical support, so that the current criteria have to be validated. Korea is in a region of low or moderate seismicity located inside the Eurasian plate, and few earthquakes with considerable magnitudes and intensities have been recorded in the area. Therefore, in this study, published data measured in overseas countries were collected in order to construct a database and validate the current criteria. In addition, dynamic centrifuge tests and a parametric study using numerical simulations were performed in order to investigate the effect on the horizontal displacement and settlement of a dam body and to validate the current criteria.
Recent earthquakes near nuclear power plants in Korea have triggered public concerns about possible seismicity of the Ulsan Fault Zone in the south-eastern part of the Korean peninsula. To reveal subsurface structures of this fault zone, we conducted high-resolution seismic refraction and reflection surveys, and closely spaced gravity measurements in the Dongchon River valley north of Ulsan, Korea. Here alluvium covers the north-south trending fault zone in a 1-km wide valley. Both source points and receivers were spaced at 5-m intervals for the 24-channel seismic refraction and reflection methods, along two profiles of 835 m and 415 m length. Gravity data were also measured along these profiles at 131 stations using a 10-m interval. Synergetic interpretation of seismic refraction, high-resolution seismic reflection, and gravity surveys across the valley indicates that the Ulsan Fault Zone was formed by apparent north-south strike-slip motions during the Cretaceous, and that some faults may have been reactivated by east-west compressional or transpressional stresses during the Tertiary or Quaternary.

An empirical formula for estimating duration magnitude(MD)is determined by analyzing 619 epicentral distance-duration data set, obtained from earthquakes of 1989-1998 recorded at the KMA network. Based on two assumptions: 1) observed signal duration decreases with increasing epicentral distance, and 2) seismographs of KMA are set at low-gain and therefore inclusion of sensitivity correction term in the equation is not necessary, scaling predicted duration at epicenter to Tsuboi's local magnitude yielded the duration magnitude equation: MD =2.0292$\times$log$\tau$+0.00123Δ-1.4017 for 1/0$\leq$ML$\leq$5.0, where $\tau$is total signal duration(sec)and Δis epicentral distance(km). Event by event comparison of ML values against MD estimates for t152 events shows that for events having a same ML the difference in MD estimates reaches as high as 1.1 magnitude units. So, to test the usefulness of the duration magnitude equation, we have calculated ML-MD relations by which duration magnitude estimates are converted to local magnitudes ("predicted" ML, say) which are then compared with the directly determined local magnitude values. Except for events with stations where duration is anomalously reestimates(predicted ML) which are in an agreement within a 0.2 magnitude units with the corresponding ML values. Although this study could gain some insights into magnitudes of the past events, we still need to re-examine all the observables in order to obtain more reliable and precise information about magnitude and hypocenter location. So we will pursue a new local-magnitude scaling, as well as refinement of the duration magnitude equation, starting soon with re-reading the amplitudes-arrival time records of (and hence relocating) 250+earthquakes of 1979-present recorded at the KMA network. Thus, with more reliable and precise earthquake parameters determined we would better understand the recent seismicity and related tectonic process within and adjacent region to the Korean peninsula.peninsula.

Ground shaking recorded during the January 20, 2007, $M_L$ 4.8 Odaesan earthquake (Korea) were used to investigate the role of the crustal structure in producing a strong ground motion, which includes the identification of the phases responsible for the strong ground motion and their implications for seismic hazard assessment. Analyses of strong-motion data together with waveform simulation revealed that critical and post-critical reflections from the crust-mantle boundary are responsible for the abnormal ground motions. This result demonstrates that the crustal structure should be taken into consideration in studies of seismic hazard mitigation even in the areas of relatively low seismicity.
The Korean peninsula is located at the edge of the East Asian active margin. The seismic activity in the Korean Peninsula is relatively low compared with the neighboring countries China and Japan. According to the available Seismic information, the Korean Peninsula is not totally safe from the Earthquake disaster. Moreover, the area is surrounded by varies tectonic forces which is resulted from the relative movements of the surrounding tectonic plates "Pacific, Philippine Sea, Eurasian and South China". Nowadays South Korea has 65 GPS stations belong to 5 governmental organizations "each organization figure out its own GPS stations for different requirements" In order to minimize the seismic hazard in the Korean Peninsula a program for monitoring the recent crustal movement has been designed considering the uses of the available GPS station "some selected stations from the previously mentioned stations" and the tectonic settings in and around the Korean Peninsula. This program is composed of two main parts, the first part to monitor the crustal deformation around the Korean Peninsula with the collaboration of the surrounding countries "China and Japan" this part is composed of two phases "East Sea Phase and Yellow Sea Phase". These phases will be helpful in determining the deformation parameters in the East Sea and the Yellow Sea respectively While the Second part of this program, is designed to determine the deformation parameters id and around the main faults in the Korean Peninsula and the relative movement between the Korean Peninsula and the Cheju Island. Through out this study the needs of crustal movement center rose up to collect the data from the previously mentioned stations and Organizations in order to use such reliable data in different geodynamical application.
