  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete pier columns in Seohae Ground Bridge. Since the bridge was designed before preparing the seismic design specification the bridge columns of hollow hexagonal section were designed and constructed with insufficient seismic reinforcement details such as longitudinal and transverse reinforcement lap-splices. In order to take the necessary measures to improve its seismic performance experimental study was performed by small-scale test for the bridge columns, From the quasi-static test for small-scale column specimens the lap-splices were not critical for overall behavior of the column if sufficient lap-splice-length was provided. The test results of failure mode effective stiffness ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio are presented.

  • The pseudo dynamic test has been carried out so as to investigate the seismic performance of RC bridge piers strengthened with and without glass fiber sheets. The Lessons from severe demage of many infrastructures in Kobe(1995) and Northridge(1996) earthquakes have emphasized the need to develop the retrofit measures to enhance flexural strength, ductility and shear strength of RC bridge piers nonseismically designed before 1992. Therefore, the objective of this experimental research is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the pseudo dynamic test. and then to enhance the ductility of concrete piers strengthening with glass fiber sheets in the plastic hinge region. 7 circular RC bridge piers were made in a 1/3.4 scale. Important test parameters are confinement steel ratio, retrofitting. load pattern, etc. The seismic behavior of circular concrete piers under artificial ground motions has been evaluated through strength and stiffness degradation, energy dissipation. It can be concluded that existing bridge piers wrapped with glass fibers in the plastic hinge regions could have enough seismic performance.

  • Nonlinear static analysis as an essential part of performance based design is now widely used especially at design offices because of its simplicity and ability to predict seismic demands on inelastic response of buildings. Since the accuracy of nonlinear static procedures (NSP) to predict seismic demands of buildings affects directly on the entire performance based design procedure, therefore lots of research has been performed on the area of evaluation of these procedures. In this paper, one of the popular NSP, FEMA356, is evaluated and compared with modal pushover analysis. The ability of these procedures to simulate seismic demands in a set of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings is explored with two level of base acceleration through a comparison with benchmark results determined from a set of nonlinear time history analyses. According to the results of this study, the modal pushover analysis procedure estimates seismic demands of buildings like inter story drifts and hinges plastic rotations more accurate than FEMA356 procedure.

  • The 1995 devastating Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake sent mental shock waves that awakened the public concern about the seismic performance of infrastructures in Korea. Seismic safety of reinforced concrete bridge piers could be secured through sufficient strength and stiffness of longitudinal steels and confined core concrete, and through ductile behaviour of bridge piers in the inelastic range. This study has been performed to verify the effect of lap spliced longitudinal steel for the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Quasi-static test has been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as displacement ductility, energy absorption etc.

  • Recently, performance based seismic design (PBSD) methods in numerous forms have been suggested and widely studied as a new concept of seismic design. The PBDSs are far from being practical due to complexity of algorithms resided in the design philosophy In this paper, optimal seismic design method based on displacement coefficient method (DCM) described in FEMA 273 is developed. As an optimizer simple genetic algorithms are used for implementations. In the optimization problem formulated in this paper, strength design criteria, stiffness design criteria, and nonlinear response criteria specified in DCM are included in design constraints. The optimal performance based design(OPBD) method is applied to seismic design of a 9-story two-dimensional steel frame structures.

  • The recent earthquakes in worldwide have caused extensive damage to highway bridge structures. In particular, it has been demonstrated that concrete columns with inadequate lateral reinforcement contributed to the catastrophic collapse of many bridges. The poor detailing of the starter bars in these columns compounded the problem of seismic deficiency. Therefore, this study has been performed to verify the effect of lap spliced longitudinal steel and confinement steel type for the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Eight concrete columns were constructed with existing scale as diameter, 1.2m and height, 4.8m. 4 confinement steel types were adopted for seismic performance evaluation. All specimens were rested under inelastic cyclic loading while simultaneously subjected to a constant axial load. The longitudinal steel lap-splice is highly effective in seismic performance deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

  • Recent destructive seismic events demonstrated the importance of mitigating human casualties and serious property damages in design and construction of structures. The Korean Bridge Design Specifications (1992) adopted seismic design requirements based on the AASHTO specification, and minor modification was made in 2000. The longitudinal steel connection of reinforced concrete bridge column is sometimes practically unavoidable. The longitudinal reinforcement details affect seismic performance such as flexural failure and shear failure. This research aims to develop longitudinal steel connection details with confinement steel by experimental study for seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. Quasi-static test under three different axial load levels was conducted for 12 spiral column specimens. All the column specimens had the same aspect ratio of 3.5. The column specimens were transversely reinforced with spiral and with five different longitudinal steel connection. The final objective of this study is to suggest appropriate longitudinal reinforcement connection details for the limited ductility design concept and improve construction quality.

  • It is known that lap splice in the longitudinal reinforcement of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets, and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splice. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled way under three different axial load levels. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios was observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.

  • It has been known that lab splices of the longitudinal reinforcement steel in bridge columns are not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were usually be located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. This research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with steel bands. It was observed that RC bridge specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low curvature and displacement ductility, but significant improvement was appeared in the ductility of RC specimens with steel bands retrofitted around the plastic hinge region.
