Impact seismic wave test is a method for nondestructive testing of concrete structure using of stress wave which is propagated and reflected from internal flaws within concrete structure and external surface, In this study, we performed non-destructive testing using impact seismic wave test for safety diagnosis of civil engineering structures. For this, I've compared and analized the result in the way of reflective method mostly using on one-dimension such as tunnel lining, and penetration method using the way of cross hole and tomography.
Geological mapping, borehole drilling, electrical resistivity, and seismic tomography surveys were conducted in order to map underground cavities and better understand the mechanisms driving subsidence in a limestone region in Korea. Limestone outcrops in the study area generally alternate between calcite-rich and calcite-poor rock. The results reveal that in areas experiencing subsidence, cavities occur mainly around soil-rock boundaries at depths of 7~14 m. These results are based on comparative analyses of electrical resistivity, seismic tomography, and borehole logging data. The volumes of the cavities are relatively small in a range of 558~835 ㎥ and they have a shape typical of suffosion sinkholes, which are typically found where sandy soils overlie bedrock cavities.
Seismic traveltime tomography technique was conducted at a site composed of black shale. It is well known that black shale has strong anisotropic property. Therefore, the anisotropic property of black shale has to be considered to obtain the appropriate subsurface velocity model by an inversion process. To estimate the anisotropic constant of the velocity of the black shale in the survey area, the relation between the velocity, which is calculated by the straight ray path and the first arrival time, and the angle of the ray propagation was examined. The elliptically shaped relation was found and it reveals that the black shale contains the anisotropic property of velocity. It was also noticed that the horizontal velocity is faster than the vertical velocity. When the estimated anisotropic constant was applied in the process of the velocity inversion for three sets of field data, we could obtain the appropriate velocity structures of the site that is consistent with the result of the geological survey.

We present a imaging method of seismic sources by time reversal propagation of seismic waves. Time-reversal wave propagation is actively used in medical imaging, non destructive testing and waveform tomography. Time-reversal wave propagation is based on the time-reversal invariance and the spatial reciprocity of the wave equation. A signal is recorded by an array of receivers, time-reversed and then back-propagated into the medium. The time-reversed signal propagates back into the same medium and the energy refocuses back at the source location. The increasing power of computers and numerical methods makes it possible to simulate more accurately the propagation of seismic waves in heterogenous media. In this work, a staggered-grid finite-difference solution of the elastic wave equation is employed for the wave propagation simulation. With numerical experiments, we show that the time-reversal imaging will enable us to explore the spatio-temporal history of complex earthquake.
The tau-p inversion algorithm is widely employed to generate starting models with most computer programs, which implement refraction tomography. This algorithm emphasises the vertical resolution of many layers, and as a result, it frequently fails to detect even large lateral variations in seismic velocities, such as the decreases which are indicative of shear zones. This study demonstrates the failure of the tau-p inversion algorithm to detect or define a major shear zone which is 50m or 10 stations wide. Furthermore, the majority of refraction tomography programs parameterise the seismic velocities within each layer with vertical velocity gradients. By contrast, the Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM) inversion algorithms emphasise the lateral resolution of individual layers. This study demonstrates the successful detection and definition of the 50m wide shear zone with the GRM inversion algorithms. The existence of the shear zone is confirmed by a 2D analysis of the head wave amplitudes and by numerous closely spaced orthogonal seismic profiles carried out as part of a later 3D refraction investigation. Furthermore, an analysis of the shot record amplitudes indicates that a reversal in the seismic velocities, rather than vertical velocity gradients, occurs in the weathered layers. The major conclusion reached in this study is that while all seismic refraction operations should aim to provide as accurate depth estimates as is practical, those which emphasise the lateral resolution of individual layers generate more useful results for geotechnical and environmental applications. The advantages of the improved lateral resolution are obtained with 2D traverses in which the structural features can be recognised from the magnitudes of the variations in the seismic velocities. Furthermore, the spatial patterns obtained with 3D investigations facilitate the recognition of structural features such as faults which do not display any intrinsic variation or 'signature' in seismic velocities.
In land seismic exploration, irregular surface topography and weathering layer in near surface distorts the reflected signals of data. Therefore, typical land seismic data should be compensated for this distortion by static correction. To perform the static correction, near-surface velocity is required, which can be obtained by seismic refraction survey. However, land seismic data is often acquired in a limited form of geometry depending on the equipment availability, accessibility condition, and permission for the survey site. In this situation, refraction analysis should be performed using reflection data because it is impossible to acquire refraction-oriented data due to limited source and receiver geometry. In this study, we aimed to analyze the reliability of the results obtained by refraction traveltime tomography when using reflection data with a limited number of sources and receivers from irregular surface topography. By comparing the inversion result from irregular topography with that from flat surface, we found that the surface topography affects the reliability of the inversion results to some degree. We also found that the number of sources has little effect on the inversion results unless the number of sources are very small. On the other hand, we observed that velocity distortion occurred in the overlapped part of receiver arrays when using a limited number of receivers, and therefore suggested the size of the least overlapping ratio to avoid the velocity distortion. Finally, we performed numerical tests for the model which simulates the surface topography and acquisition geometry of the survey region and verified the reliability analysis of inversion results. We identified reliable areas and suspicious area of the inverted velocity model by applying the analysis results to field data.
To predict ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face, seismic refraction survey has been widely used. But due to the development in seismic equipment and techniques, tomography using borehole and others are actively applied in recent years. This study has a purpose to prevent stability problems during excavation and construction of tunnels by predicting unfavorable ground conditions such as fault, fractured zone and rock quality variation zone ahead of the tunnel face using TSP survey equipment. In this study, the validity of predicting ground conditions ahead of tunnel face by TSP survey has been evaluated through the case study in the road construction site.

Recently, multi-dimensional joint inversion of geophysical data based on fundamentally different physical properties is being actively studied. Joint inversion can provide a way to obtaining much more accurate image of the subsurface structure. Through the joint inversion, furthermore, it is possible to directly estimate non-geophysical material properties from geophysical measurements. In this study, we developed a new algorithm for jointly inverting dc resistivity and seismic traveltime data based on the multiple constraints: (1) structural similarity based on cross-gradient, (2) correlation between two different material properties, and (3) a priori information on the material property distribution. Through the numerical experiments of surface dc resistivity and seismic refraction surveys, the performance of the proposed algorithm was demonstrated and the effects of different regularizations were analyzed. In particular, we showed that the hidden layer problem in the seismic refraction method due to an inter-bedded low velocity layer can be solved by the joint inversion when appropriate constraints are applied.
In this study, a travel-time tomography software was developed under the MS Windows system and GUI environment for user. The software supports following features: (1) supporting various data input format (2) flexible treatment of shot and receiver coordinate coding (3) flexible first arrival picking and modification (4) easy modification of intermediate tomogram. It is expected that the effort of the user can be minimized in each data processing step.
Frequency-space domain full-wave tomography is a promising technique for delineating detailed subsurface structure with high resolution. However, this method requires criteria for the selection of a set of optimal temporal frequency components, to achieve stability in the sequence of inversion processes together with computational efficiency. We propose a method of selecting optimal temporal frequencies, based on wavenumber continuity. The proposed method is tested numerically and is shown to be able to select an optimal set of frequency components that are sufficient to image the anomalies.
