  • In this paper a relatively simple and reliable wall models are investigated, which are suitable to be efficiently incorporated in a practical nonlinear seismic analysis of reinforced concrete shear wall structural systems. Four types of analogous frames have been selected for the elastic stress analysis. Three types of macro-elements model which include wide-column model, truss model and Kabeyasawa model, are chosen for the use in nonlinear analysis. A numerical analysis is carried out for six stories plane coupled wall structure. Analysis results indicate that macro-elements wall model is effective and suitable for simulating stress in elastic analysis. In inelastic analysis, the yielding strength have little effect on different wall model, and the effect on post-yielding stiffness in story shear-drift relationship depend on force-deformation properties of macro-elements.

  • In this study, new methods of PC panel connection using 'ㄷ'type steel connection is proposed for highly seismic zone. A study was carry out to investigate the connection behavior subjected to cyclic inelastic loading. Three planar type and two T type PC wall will be tested. The variables will be examined were the shear reinforcement existence of top and bottom walls. The specimens will be tested only reverse cyclic loading in accordance with a prescribed displacement history. To transfer the shear strength shear key set up between top and bottom wall. Failure mode, behavior, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens constructed by new connections wll be compared with those of monolithic walls and Han's(Han, Jun Hee, Seoul National University) model.

  • In many structures, the masonry infill panels have been used for architectural reasons and their influence on the structure is often ignored by engineers. However, it has been recognized that the presence of masonry infills may debates. Recently, the pushover analysis technique is used for the prediction of the inelastic behaviors of structures in the seismic evaluation of existing buildings. However, the reliability of this analysis method has not been fully checked with the test results, particularly in the case of masonry-infilled frames. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical reponses of a high-rise masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frame using DRAIN-2DX program and the test results performed previously. It is concluded from this comparison that the strength and stiffness of members can be predicted with quite high reliability while the ductility capacity of members can not be described reasonably.

  • Shear wall-frame system is one of the most, if not the most, popular system for resisting lateral loads. The core is the primary lateral load-resisting systems, the perimeter frame is designed for gravity loads, and the connection between perimeter frame and core is generally a shear connection. Specially, single plate shear connection have gained considerable popularity in recent years due to their ease of fabrication and erection. Single plate shear connection should be designed to satisfy the dual criteria of shear strength and rotational ductility. An experimental program was undertaken to evaluate seismic behavior of single plate shear connection. The main test variable is the reinforcing detail of connection. Through the experimental program, the cyclic behavior of typical and reinforcing single plate shear connection was established.

  • A series of three shear wall specimens was tested under constant axial stress and reversed cyclic lateral loading in order to evaluate the seismic retrofit that had been proposed for the shear wall with the opening induced by remodeling. One of these specimens was tested in the as-built condition and the other two were retrofitted prior to testing. The retrofit involved the use of carbon fiber sheets and steel plates (thickness of 3mm) over the entire face of the wall. The test results show that the ultimate failure modes of the specimens were found to be shear fracture of the wall around the opening and two difference types of retrofitting strategy make the different effects of a rise in the strength of each specimen.

  • As the level of earthquake intensity in Korea is considered to be moderate, some structures or structural elements may be subjected to the reduced ductility demand, in contrast to the structures in high seismicity, due to the large inherent strength induced by gravity loads. New Zealand Standard(NZS) deals with there structures within the category of structures of limited ductility. This paper briefly reviews the applicability of the code, regarding limited ductility, for frame strucures which are commonly used as the office building structural system. The difference of the loading condition is considered. Details of the plastic hinge region are compared between NZS and Korean standard.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effective width of wide beam. Three specimens were designed to have different depths of wide beam and to simulate exterior beam-column joint including spandrel beam. Load reversals were applied to the end of wide beam to model behaviors under seismic situation. From the test, it was shown that the strength and effective width of specimens were improved when the depth of specimens increased. The effective width of wide beam depended on the depth of it. Formulas in ACI 318-02 underestimated the effective width of wide beam even though these reflected the contribution of the depth of beam.

  • Concentrically braced steel frames are considered as being quite prone to soft-story response due to the degradation in brace compressive resistance after buckling under severe ground motions. When combined with the system P-Delta effects, collapse of the concentrically braced frames by dynamic instability becomes a highly probable. In this study, a new, relatively simple dynamic instability coefficient was proposed for diagonally braced steel frames by considering the strength degradation of the brace after buckling. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was conducted to check the robustness of the proposed index based on simulated ground motions. The analysis results showed that the dynamic instability index proposed predicts the collapse potential more consistently than the conventional one. Dynamic instability was triggered when the index value was close to 0.7.

  • High-rise residential buildings in these days tend to adopt a building frame system as primary earthquake resisting structural system for some architectural reasons. But there exist several ambiguities in designing such building frame systems according to current codes, with regards to : the effective stiffness property of RC cracked section in static and dynamic analyses, analytical model to evaluate story drift ratio and, deformation compatibility requirements of frames. The comparative study for these issues by appling IBC 2000 and KBC 2005 to a typical building frame system shows that demands of member strength and story drift ratio can be different significantly depending on designer's interpretation and application of code requirements.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were done to investigate seismic performance of slender sheat wall with no boundary confinement. 1/3 scale-specimens that model the plastic region of long slender shear walls subjected to combined axial load and bending moment were rested to investigate strength, ductility, capacity of energy dissipation and strain distribution. The experimental results show that the slender walls fail due to early crushing in the compressive boundary, and then have very low ductility. The measured maximum compressive strain is 0.0021, which is much less then 0.004 being commonly used for estimation of ductility. The experimental results indicates that the maximum compressive strain is not a fixed value but is affected by moment gradient along the shear wall height and distance from neutral axis to the extreme compressive fiber.
