  • In this study 3- and 6-story flat plate structures designed only for gravity load are retrofitted with steel plates and braces and their seismic performances are evaluated to verify the effect of seismic retrofit. According to the analysis results obtained from nonlinear static and dynamic analyses both the strength and stiffness are significantly enhanced as a result of the seismic retrofit. Especially the effect of column jacketing could be enhanced significantly when slabs were reinforced to prevent premature punching shear failure. When buckling-restrained braces are used instead of conventional braces, the structures showed more ductile behavior, especially in the 3-story structure.

  • Retrofit of soft-story buildings due to seismic loads using Gap-Inclined-Brace (GIB) system is considered a new retrofit technique that aims to maintain both strength and stiffness of structure. In addition, it provides more ductility and less P-delta effect, and subsequently better performance is observed. In this paper, the effect of the eccentricity between GIB and the retrofitted column due to installation on the efficiency of the retrofitting system is studied. In addition, a modification in the determination method of GIB properties is introduced to reduce the eccentricity effect. Also, the effect of GIB system on the seismic response of mid-rise buildings with different heights considering soft-story at various heights has been studied. A numerical model is developed to study the impact of such system on the response of retrofitted soft-story buildings under the action of seismic loads. To achieve that goal, this model is used to perform a numerical investigation, by considering five case study scenarios represent several locations of soft-story of two mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings. At first, Non-linear static pushover analysis was carried out to develop the capacity curves for case studies. Then, Non-linear time history analyses using ten earthquake records with five peak ground accelerations is performed for each case study scenario before and after retrofitting with GIB. The results show that large GIB eccentricity reduce the ultimate lateral resistance and deformation capacity of the retrofitting system. Moreover, the higher the retrofitted building, the more deformation capacity is observed but without significant increase in ultimate lateral resistance.

  • Large scale earthquake was occurred in different parts of the world like Japan (in 1995), Republic of Pakistan (2005), in China (2008) etc and enormous structures were damaged. As a result of collapse of school buildings structures numerous students are died and it had a big impact on the international community. Therefore, the interest of preparing the seismic resistant school building structures in our country is increases as school building are used as emergency shelter for local residents. But the current standard of seismic design ratio of 3.7% is applied for school building in Korea which is only significant earthquake damage is expected. In order to overcome the current situation, seismic performance evaluation is carried out for the existing school building and an accurate and appropriate seismic retrofit is required based on performance evaluation to upgrade the existing school buildings. In this paper, nonlinear analysis on existing school buildings for ATC-40(Applied Technology Council, ATC) and FEMA-356(Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA) are carried out using the capacity spectrum method to evaluate seismic performance and to determine the need for retrofitting. In addition, after reinforcement to enhance the seismic performance is applied the seismic performance evaluation is carried out to verify the effectiveness of seismic retrofit.

  • Using the life cycle cost concept, optimum maintenance and retrofit planning for reliable seismic performance is suggested the overall life cycle cost to be minimized including the initial cost, the costs of inspection, repair, and failure. Limit states of the bridges are defined. And failure probabilities are computed through crossing theory. The effect of maintenance and retrofit is represented using the probability of damage detection and event tree analysis. Optimization of maintenance and retrofit planning method proposed from this research was applied to numerical examples. The analysis incorporates the acceleration and site conditions prescribed in the code, and the quality of inspection methods.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of a hybrid seismic energy dissipation device composed of a viscoelastic damper and a steel slit damper connected in parallel. A moment-framed structure is designed without seismic load and is retrofitted with the hybrid dampers. The model structure is transformed into an equivalent simplified system to find out optimum story-wise damper distribution pattern using genetic algorithm. The effectiveness of the hybrid damper is investigated by fragility analysis of the structure with and without the dampers. The analysis results show that after seismic retrofit the probability of reaching damage states, especially the complete damage state, of the structure turn out to be significantly reduced.

  • Occurrence of earthquakes have been increased all over the world and also, magnitude of earthquakes have been larger these days. Earthquake can be happened in Korea and is not a safe country any more. Many buildings are exposed at danger without any alternatives against earthquake in Korea. Among various kinds of buildings, school buildings are very important and urgent, because many students stays at school and young students have some difficulty to evacuate. Also, most existing school buildings in Korea were not designed considering earthquake resistant design codes. Thus, in this study, 3 types of braces were applied for seismic retrofits of existing school buildings using commercial structural analysis software and effective seismic retrofits were evaluated and discussed based on results by time history analysis.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of a staggered wall structure designed with conventional strength based design, and compares it with the performance of the structure designed by capacity design procedure which ensures strong column-weak beam concept. Then the seismic reinforcement schemes such as addition of interior columns or insertion of rotational friction dampers at the ends of connecting beams are validated by comparing their seismic performances with those of the standard model structure. Fragility analysis shows that the probability to reach the dynamic instability is highest in the strength designed structure and is lowest in the structure with friction dampers. It is also observed that, at least for the specific model structures considered in this study, R factor of 5.0 can be used in the seismic design of staggered wall structures with proposed retrofit schemes, while R factor of 3.0 may be reasonable for standard staggered wall structures.

  • An experimental program was undertaken to develop seismic retrofit methods of existing steel moment connections with floor slab for improved seismic performance. Five full-scale composite specimens were tested under cyclic loading. Conventional through-diaphragm connections [please check this; no search results were found for through-diaphragm connections] composed of square-tube column and H-beam were retrofitted by adding either a bottom-flange dogbone (RBS) or an improved welded horizontal stiffener at the beam bottom flange. The effectiveness of the proposed retrofit connections schemes was evaluated. The specimen retrofitted using the RBS concept at the bottom flange showed poor connection ductility. In contrast. specimens with the proposed horizontal stiffener details exhibited improved connection ductility.

  • Seismic retrofit of an existing steel-reinforced concrete hospital building that features innovative use of a continuous energy-dissipative steel column (CEDC) system is presented in this paper. The special system has been adopted to provide an efficient solution taking into account the difficulties of applying traditional intervention techniques to minimize the impact on architectural functionality and avoid the loss of building function and evacuation during the retrofit implementation. The lateral stiffness and strength of the CEDC system were defined based on the geometric and mechanical properties of the steel strip dampers. The hysteretic behavior under cyclic loadings was defined using a simplified numerical model. Its effectiveness was validated by comparing the results of full-scale experimental data available from the literature. All the main design considerations of the retrofitting plan are described in detail. The effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting system was demonstrated by nonlinear time-history analyses under different sets of earthquake-strong ground motions. The analysis results show that the CEDC system is effective in controlling the deformation pattern and significantly reducing damage to the existing structure during major earthquakes.

  • At present, the problem to secure seismic resistance capacity is one of the most important issue in school buildings. However, the range of facilities to consider retrofit or the proper direction of seismic retrofit haven't provided in details. Therefore in this study, a series of school buildings were chosen as established time, and the structure composition and the seismic performance of the school buildings were investigated to get the comprehensive features of seismic resistance capacity in school buildings. At result, it was presented that the member capacities were less than criteria and structure system was showed the brittle behavior at the collapse prevention level at the school buildings before 1990 year. At the school buildings after 1990 year, though it is hard to get general features for various compositions, it was presented that they have problems for seismic performance evaluation in some buildings at life safety level, specially in the direction of X axis. So, considering the introduction process of seismic criteria in Korea, the school buildings before 2005 year should be examined for seismic resistance capacity and the seismic performance should be examined as well as member capacity to resist seismic.
