Seismic ground motion can vary significantly over distances comparable to the length of a majority of highway bridges on multiple supports. This paper presents results of fragility analysis of two actual highway bridges under ground motion with spatial variation. Ground motion time histories are artificially generated with different amplitudes, phases, as well as frequency contents at different support locations. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to study dynamic responses of the bridges under these ground motions. The effect of spatial variation on the seismic response is systematically examined and the resulting fragility curves are compared with those under identical support ground motion. This study shows that ductility demands for the bridge columns can be underestimated if the bridge is analyzed using identical support ground motions rather than differential support ground motions. Fragility curves are developed as functions of different measures of ground motion intensity including peak ground acceleration(PGA), peak ground velocity(PGV), spectral acceleration(SA), spectral velocity(SV) and spectral intensity(SI). This study represents a first attempt to develop fragility curves under spatially varying ground motion and provides information useful for improvement of the current seismic design codes so as to account for the effects of spatial variation in the seismic design of long-span bridges.

In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structures. The characteristics of soil and the locality of the site where those ground motions were recorded affect on the contents of earthquake waves. Therefore, it is difficult to select appropriate input ground motions for seismic response analysis. This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also evaluates the nonlinear response spectra by the simulated earthquake motions. The artificial earthquake wave are generated according to the previously recorded earthquake waves in past earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wave, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% critical viscous damping. Each simulated earthquake wave has a identical phase angles to the original recorded ground acceleration, and match to design spectra in the range of period from 0.02 to 10.0 seconds. The seismic response analysis is performed to examine the nonlinear response characteristics of SDOF system subjected to the simulated earthquake waves. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

Longitudinal dynamic behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined with various magnitudes of peak ground accelerations. The stiffness degradation due to abutment-soil interaction is considered in the bridge model which may play the major role upon the global dynamic characteristics. The idealized mechanical model for the whole ridge system is proposed by adopting the multiple-degree-of-freedom system which can consider components such as pounding phenomena friction at the movable supports rotational and translational motions of foundations and the nonlinear pier motions. The abutment-soil interaction is simulated by utilizing the one degree-of-freedom system with nonlinear spring. The stiffness degradation of the abutment-soil system is found to increase the relative displacement under moderate seismic excitations.

Bridge dynamic behaviors and the failure of the foundation are examined in this study under seismic excitations including the local scour effect. The simplified mechanical model, which can consider the effect of various influence elements, is proposed to simulate the bridge motions. The scour depths around the foundations are estimated by the CSU equation recommended by the HEC-18 and the local scour effect upon global bridge motions is then considered by applying various foundation stiffness based upon the reduced embedded depths. From the simulation results, it is found that seismic responses of a bridge with the same scour depth for both foundations increase due to the local scour effect. The bridge scour is found to be significant under weak and moderate seismic intensity. The recovery durations of the foundation stiffness after local scour are found to be critical in the estimation of the probability of foundation failure under earthquakes. Therefore, the safety of the whole bridge system should be conducted with the consideration of the scour effect upon the foundations and the recovery duration of stiffness should be determined rationally.
To resolve a general argument about OBE elimination for the future nuclear power plant design, seismic responses of reactor vessel internals and fuel assembly for Ulchin nuclear power plant units 3 and 4 in Korea are investigated as an example. Dynamic analyses of the coupled internals and core are performed for the seismic excitations using the reactor vessel motions. By investigating the response relations between OBE and SSE and their response characteristics, the critical components for OBE loading are addressed. Also the fuel assembly responses are calculated using the core plate motions and their behavior is found to be insignificant for OBE elimination.

The seismic response of structures to strong ground motions is a complex problem that has been studied for decades. However, most of current seismic regulations do not assess the potential level of damage that a structure may undergo during a strong earthquake. This will happen in spite that the design objectives for any structural system are formulated in terms of acceptable levels of damage. In this article, we analyze the expected damage in single-degree-of-freedom systems subjected to long-duration ground motions generated in soft soil sites, such as those located in the lakebed of Mexico City. An energy-based methodology is formulated, under the consideration of input energy as the basis for the evaluation process, to estimate expected damage. The results of the proposed methodology are validated with damage curves established directly with nonlinear dynamic analyses.

Using moving support finite elements, seismic analysis of statically-determinate beams subjected to support motions is performed to show its accuracy and its ease of use. Examples of cantilever and simply-supported beam subjected to support motions are illustrated and the numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions. The examples show the elements facilitate modeling beams with the conventional 2-noded, Hermitian, Euler-Bernoulli beam element. The comparisons of the results with analytical solutions show good agreements with high accuracy.

From the results, it is found that seismic responses of a bridge with the same scour depth level for both piers increase as the scour depth increase due to the local scour effect. The scour effect is found to be significant under weak excitations and still to be quite notable even for moderate excitations.

In the current seismic design codes design earthquake is usually defined as the earthquake with the 90 percent probability of not being exceeded in the life time of a structure which is assumed as 50 years equivalent to the earthquake with 475 year recurrence period. However the life time of tall building structures may be much longer than 50 yers. The current seismic design code requires the modal analysis or dynamic time history analysis for the buildings with the height exceeding a certain height limit. The objective of this study is to collect the earthquake ground motion(EQGM) which can be used for dynamic time history analysis for tall buildings. For this purpose linear elastic design response spectrum (LEDRS) in the code is scaled to account for the recurrence period of the design earthquake. The earthquake ground motions which has been recorded are calibrated to fit the scaled LEDRS. The set of calibrated EQGM can be treated as design EQGM for the design of tall building with longer lifetime than ordinary building.
This study presents the reliability-based analysis of nonlinear structures using the analytical fragility curves excited by random earthquake loads. The stochastic method of ground motion simulation is combined with the random vibration theory to compute structural failure probability. The formulation of structural failure probability using random vibration theory, based on only the frequency information of the excitation, provides an important basis for structural analysis in places where there is a lack of sufficient recorded ground motions. The importance of frequency content of ground motions on probability of structural failure is studied for different levels of the nonlinear behavior of structures. The set of simulated ground motion for this study is based on the results of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. It is demonstrated that the scenario events identified by the seismic risk differ from those obtained by the disaggregation of seismic hazard. The validity of the presented procedure is evaluated by Monte-Carlo simulation.
