This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of shattered grain by combine harvesting at the previous year on rice plant emergence at different planting methods and plant characteristics, The results are follows : Combine harvesting greatly influence on shattered grain of Samgangbyeo as Tongil variety (49.5kg/10a) compared to that of Nagdongbyeo as Japonica variety(27.8kg/10a), while Nagdong-byeo showed higher germination rate than Samgangbyeo, whether transplanted and direct seeded. Emergence of volunteer and seed mixture were lower in transplanted than in direct seeded. In variety test. Japonica variety showed higher emergence of volunteer rice and seed mixture than Tongil variety. Generally, no significant difference in yield components were observed with different varieties by the volunteer rice. But the volunteer rice caused by combine harvesting decreased culm length, panicle length, spikelet number, panicle number and ripening ratio. except l000-grain weights.
Soil seed banks at ecological preservation areas in Seoul, Jinkwannae-dong, Bangi-dong and Bam-sum, were studied by seedling emergence method from May to October 2004. Total number of species and individuals in seed banks were 42 and 5,190 at Jinkwannae-dong, 39 and 2,290 at Bangi-dong, and 39 and 1,047 at Bamsum. Salix koreensis community at Jinkwannae-dong has the highest number of seedlings among all sites. The most abundant species were Lindernia procumbens in Jinkwannae-dong and Bam-sum and Typha spp. in Bangi-dong. The dominant species of seed banks were different from that of plant communities such as Phragmites communis community, Salix koreensis community, Persicaria thunbergii community, Phragmites japonica community, and Populus tomentiglandulosa community. However the dominant species of seed banks in Typha community was Typha spp. Total 63 species emerged in either the wet or submerged conditions. Fifty six species appeared in the wet condition and 25 in the submerged condition. Eighteen species appeared in both conditions. Numbers of species and individuals were much less in the submerged condition than in the wet condition but free-floating hydrophytes including Rorippa islandica and floating-leaved hydrophytes including Monochoria vaginalis appeared only in the submerged condition. In the investigation of soil seed bank by distance from water edge (Bamsum), water side 3 ($300\sim350m$ from water) edge, where water level is fluctuating frequently, has the highest number of seedlings.

The purpose of this study was to compare the test methods for predicting field emergence of Lotus corniculatus and Trifolium pratense. Four seed lots of two herbage legumes were controlled deteriorated, accelerated aged before germination test and conductivity of each seed lot was determined. Those germination percent and conductivity of seed lots were compared with actual field emergence rate. Field emergence rate could be estimated by the controlled deterioration test ($R^2$=0.687), by the accelerated aging test ($R^2$=0.260), and by the conductivity test ($R^2$=0.238). A multiple regression equation for predicting field emergence rate(equation omitted) was estimated as (equation omitted)=-198.16 + 2.3493X$_1$-1.5564X$_2$ + 1.9812X$_3$where X$_1$, percent germination of controlled deterioration test ; X$_2$, percent germination of accelerated aging test; and X$_3$, conductivity of solute leakage in the conductivity test. Conclusively, unless multiple tests are not available, the controlled deterioration test was comparatively high efficient for predicting field emergence rate, however, the combined measurements of those three tests can enhance the efficiency.
To find out the effects of seed maturity and seeding rate of two planting times on the seed emergence and silage and seed yields of rye, a local variety 'Paldanghomir' harvested 30 and 45 days after heading(DAH) were planted at five seeding rates on October(optimum) and November(late) in 1985. At the optimum planting, number of seedlings per unit area and number of tillers per plant were affected by seeding rate, but not by the seed maturities. However, at the late planting, number of seedlings per unit area and number of tillers per plant wer higher in the seed harvested 45 DAH, and they were not correlated with seeding rate in both seeds harvested 30 and 45 DAH. Heading date was 2 or 3 days earlier in the seeds harvested 45 DAH in both planting times. Silage yield was higher at the optimum planting and increased as seeding rate increased in both planting times. Number of spike and 1000~seed weight were higher at the optimum planting than late planting and higher in the seed harvested 45 DAH than 30 DAH in late planting, but were not different among seeding rates. Seed yield at optimum planting showed no difference between seed maturities and among seeding rates, and recommandable seeding rate was 600 seeds per $m^2$. At late planting the seed yield of the seed harvested 45 DAH in the seeding rate over 750 seeds per $m^2$ approached to the yield of the optimum planting. The seed harvested 30 DAH was unstable because of extremely low emergence rate and yield even at the higher seeding rate in late planting. planting.
Seed germination test done in laboratory does not coincide with field emergence in general. The experiments were carried out to examine the effect of priming and $GA_3$, treatment to seeds of Platycodon grandiflorum; Codonopsis lanceolata and C. pilosula on lapsed time to first seedling emergence, seedling emergence, morphological characters and growth and the cause of poor emergence of C. pilosula. No-treatment as Control (water), priming or $GA_3$ treatment was done with only distilled water for 2 days, $CA(NO_3)_2$ 150 mM for 2 days or $GA_3$ 0.1 mM for 3 days, respectively. Seedling emergence rate was counted every 2 days but morphological characters and dry weight of shoot and root were measured on 38 days after sowing. Their internal seed structures were examined with Scanning Electron Microscope. C. pilosula had poorer seedling emergence rate than P grandiflorum and C. lanceolata showing nearly same rate: Compared to the other treatment (s) P. grandiflorum displayed higher rate in priming and $GA_3$, treatments but C. lanceolata or C. pilosula did the greatest rate in only $GA_3$ or priming treatment, respectively. $GA_3$ treatment to seeds of P. grandiflorum and C. lanceolata shortened the lapsed time to seedling emergence in comparison with Control, 2-days water imbibition before sowing. In all the species plant height and number of leaves per seedling became shorter and less in priming treatment than the other treatments except plant height of C. Pilosula while their hypocotyl length was nearly same in all treatments. Although priming treatment had nearly similar effect to morphological characters, $GA_3$ treatment forced greater shoot, root and aftermath total dry weight per seedling. Poor seedling emergence of C. pilosula was caused by its seed defect like cleavage or lack of embryo, poor development of embryo and endosperm or their separation.

During the routine survey, the mortality of mulberry seedlings was noticed due to damping-off disease. The disease recognized by rotting of emerged seedlings near the soil line (just below the soil level) resulting in collapse of the seedlings. Two fungi were isolated from affected samples and identified as Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler and Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc. Both the fungi were found to be responsible in causing pre and post emergence damping-off of seedlings in mulberry. For management of the disease, an experiment was conducted using fungicides. These fungicides were applied as seed treatment; soil drenching and foliar spray alone and in combination. Among the different treatments, integration of seed treatment and soil application of Dithane M-45 (Mancozeb 75% WP) + Bavistin (Carbendazim 50% WP) followed by foliar spray of these fungicides (after 35 days of sowing) resulted in better survivability of seedlings (93.3 %) on $90^th$ day and controlled the pre and post emergence damping off by 100 and 89.5%, respectively over the check.
Seed coat of sword bean (Canavalia gladiata) is very thick and hard, it is difficult to absorb water during germination and it requires much time that cotyledon come out from seed coat since seminal root appearanced. Therefore this experiment was carried out to increase the germination rate by easing water absorption through mechanical scarification on seed coat. Non-scarification seed did not germinated at 7 days after treatment but scarification seed showed germination rate of 98%. Therefore mechanical scarification of seed coat was increased germination rate. Non-scarification seed absorbed less than 10% water of dry weight at 8 hours after treatment but scarification seed absorbed about 90% water at 7 hours after treatment and more than 150% water at 8 hours and swelled about 1.4-1.5 times in length and width of seed. Germination rate of scarification seed was high under high temperature and it was 96% and 93% at $25^{\circ}C$ and 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The rate of cotyledon emergence on clay loam soil was the highest among bed soils. Soaked seed after mechanical scarification in distilled water was germinated faster than non-soaked seed on early in bed soil. The rate of cotyledon emergence was more than 92% at 9 days after sowing but non-scarification and soaked seed was germinated late and showed very low germination rate as 67%.
This experiment was conducted to determine tuber yield increase of Konjac by sowing time, seed tuber split method and cultural methods. Tuber yield per unit area was generally increased in early planting than conventional planting time. Tuber yield of polyethylene film mulching culture among storage methods was high, while the emergence rate of konjac for seedling plus PE mulching, and tunnel culture were prompted by 20 days, and especially seedling was to be greatly controlled due to temperature difference of the day and night at emergence. All of the cutting methods(two and four split method) were higher than conventional method because of increasing number of bulblet, accordingly, that method using seed tuber was profitable for mass propagation. Both botanical characteristics and tuber yield tend to be increased at 30 to 50 percent shading than natural condition.

The experiment was implemented to gain basic data for stable proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) production through germination viability and establishment uniformity based on seed refining under seed selection with specific gravity of proso millet seed. Seeds of three proso millet cultivars were carefully selected by adjusting NaCl into 9 levels (1.000, 1.005, 1.010, 1.015, 1.020, 1.025, 1.030, 1.035, 1.04 g·L-1), and their standard germination rate, seeding quality and field emergence rate were investigated. Proso millets showed heavier thousand seed weight as specific gravity high. In standard germination, all of the 3 cultivars of selected seeding showed at least 91% germination rate. With respect to the 1.040 g·L-1 selection by specific gravity, 'Hwanggeum' had 98.9%, 'Ibaekchal', 99.4%, and 'Hwangsilchal', 98.9%, recording the highest. Seeding quality was investigated and it was found that, compared with the non-selected seeds, selected seeds had longer plant heights and averaged 2.0, 2.2 and 1.9 cm, respectably. In terms of leaf length, only 'Hwanggeum' and 'Ibaekchal' showed distinctive differences. No significance was found in stem diameter and SPAD. The seeds selected using specific gravity all had longer or heavier average root length, root weight and stem weight. Compared with non-selected seeds, the specific gravity of 1.040 g·L-1 had longer root lengths of 2.9, 3.0 and 2.9 cm. 1.040 g·L-1 was also found to have the heaviest root weight, and stem weight. The field emergence viability investigation found significance solely in the mean emergence time (MET) by the cultivar. High significance was found in percent emergence (PE) and emergence rate index (ERI) in the specific gravity for the selection of seeds. All of the three cultivars showed higher PE and ERI as specific gravity selection high. The 1.040 g·L-1 specific gravity selection had the highest PE of 90.7, 85.3 and 92.8%. For productivity increase based on improved proso millet germination rate and enhanced establishment uniformity, it seems favorable to employ 1.040 g·L-1 specific gravity selection using salt solution.
The incidence of fungi and their possible contribution to low vigour were examined in a collection of ginseng (Panax quiquefolius) seed from Ontario. When examined after one winter of stratification in the field and storage at 4f for five months in the laboratory, the collection exhibited low vigour (plant stand 16.7% of seeding rate six weeks after seeding) and high incidence (94%) of discolored or soft seed. Fungi isolated (and incidence) from 1,304 endosperm halves recovered from surface-sterilized seed were, in order of abundance, Fusarium rostrum (22.2%), Chaetomium crispuum (14.3%), Funriud oxysporum (9.0%), Fusarium sdani (9.0%), iwmor sp. (8.4%), Alternaria sp. (8.1%), Zowieua lucotricha (7.8%), Cylindruarpn sp. (0.9%), Fusarium avenacmm (0.9%), and Vdudla iliata (0.4%). Most of these fungi, including known and potential pathogens of ginseng (species of Alerraria, Cylindrocarpon, Fusarium, and Trichodirma), were associated with both healthy and diseased seed. Application of Benlate (benomyl), Thiram (thiram), or UBI-2584 (tebuconazole) to seed caused slight to pronounced reduction in emergence and did not significantly affect plant stand six weeks after seeding. The study demonstrated the high level of infection by fungi, including known and potential pathogens of the cry, in an arbitrary collection of ginseng seed from commercial sources, and the phytotoxicity of the fungicides tested when applied to moist stratified seed. The lack of efficacy of the fungicides precluded determination of the contribution of seedborne fungi to low vigour of the seed.
