This study investigates the development of lower channels and sediment sorting processes in the vegetated channels with the mixed sediment. The sediment discharges fluctuate with time and decrease with vegetation density. The bed changes with irregular patterns, and the sediment particles in the vegetated zone at the surface of bed are fine. The dimensionless geometric mean decreases with vegetation density. The fine sediment particles are trapped by vegetation, and the bed between main steam and vegetated zone increases. Moreover, the particle sizes are distributed irregularly near the zone. The hiding functions decrease with dimensionless particle size. However, the functions increase with vegetation density, which is confirmed by decreasing sediment discharge with vegetation. The lower channel is stable and the migration decreases in the condition of $0.5tems/cm^2$. However, the migration of the lower channel in the condition of $0.7stems/cm^2$ increases due to the increased sinuosity and new generated channels in the sedimentated vegetation zone.

Prediction on initial motion of sediment is crucial to evaluate sediment transport and channel stability. The condition of incipient movement of sediment is characterized by bed shear stress, which is generated from force of moving water against the bed of the channel, and by critical shear stress, which depends on force resisting motion of sediment due to the submerged weight of the grains. When the bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress, sediment particles begin rolling and sliding at isolated and random locations. In Mountain River, debris flow frequently occurs due to heavy rainfall and can lead some natural stones from mountain slope into the bed river. This phenomenon could add additional forces to sediment transport system in the bed of river and also affect or change direction and magnitude of sediment movement. In this paper, evaluations on incipient motion of uniform coarse gravel under falling spheres impacts using small scale flume channel were conducted. The drag force of falling spheres due to water flow and length movement of falling spheres were investigated. The experiments were carried out in flume channel made by glass wall and steel floor with 12 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. The bed slopes were selected with the range from 0.7% to 1.5%. The thickness of granular layer was at least 3 times of diameter of granular particle to meet grain placement condition. The sphere diameters were chosen to be 4cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. The spheres were fallen in to the bed channel for critical condition and under critical condition of motion particle. Based on the experimental results, the Shields curve of particles Reynold number and dimensionless critical shear stress were plotted. The relationship between with drag force and the length movement of spheres were plotted. The pathways of the bed material Under the impact of spheres falling were analyzed.

The depletion of dissolved oxygen (DO) in urban streams has a profound effect on the aquatic ecosystem; however, the change in DO by resuspension of sediments and the cause have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, the physicochemical properties (particle size, and the content of organic and heavy metals) of the sediments of an urban stream (Anyang Stream) and the characteristics of water quality changes (DO, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved nitrogen (DN), sediment oxygen demand (SOD), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)) by sediment resuspension were investigated. The sediment content of fine particles (< 0.2 mm) increased from 36.7% to 52.7% from the upstream to the downstream, and the contents of heavy metals and organic matter of the sediment were also higher towards the downstream. The depletion of DO by resuspension was observed in the sediment at the downstream sites (P8, P9), where the fine particle content was high, and biological SOD (BSOD) was more than 88% compared to the total SOD. The increase in BSOD coincided with the increase in ATP. It was also confirmed that the depletion of DO could increase the amount of heavy metals (such as Fe, Mn, and Pb) released from the sediment. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that resuspension of sediments induces rapid water quality changes and may cause accidents, such as fish mortality, during rainfall, and such a water quality effect can be more pronounced in sediments with a high content of fine particles and organic matter and high biological activity.
The removal efficiency of road-deposited sediment (SDR) by road sweeping was analyzed by performing particle size analysis before and after road sweeping at four highways during May to December 2019. The SDR accounted for the largest proportion in the range of 250 to 850 ㎛ and the degree of its proportion had an effect on the particle size distribution curve. The particle size distribution of the collected sediments showed a similar distribution at all sites. Below 75 ㎛, the removal efficiency of SDR showed a constant value around 40%, but above 75 ㎛, it increased as the particle size increased. The removal efficiency was 82-90% (average 86%) for gravel, 66-93% (average 79%) for coarse sand, 35-92% (average 64%) for fine sand, 29-69% (average 44%) for very fine sand, 19-58% (average 40%) for silt loading, 10-59% (average 40%) for TSP, 13-57% (average 40%) for PM10, and 15-61% (average 38%) for PM2.5. SDR removal efficiency showed an average of 69% for the four highways. It was found that if the amount of SDR was less than 100 g/m2, it was affected by the road surface condition and had a large regional deviation. As such, the amount of SDR and the removal efficiency increased. The fine particles, which have relatively low removal efficiency, contained a large amount of pollutants, which is an important factor in water and air pollution. Therefore, various measures to improve the removal efficiency of fine particles in SDR by road sweeping are needed.
In this paper, we reported the verification of numerical simulation approach for sedimentation of the multi-size particles in a container. The comparison between experimentally measured values and numerically evaluated values on settle down process of fully mixed mixture is carried out. In an attempt to represent the natural particle size distribution, various diameters of single particles are simulated and the results are compared with the outcome of the multi-size computation. When the empirical formula for mean particle size estimation is adopted to define the sediment diameter, computation and comparison are conducted.
Two-phase flows, e.g. sediment-laden flow and bubbly flow, have two different flow profiles; flow velocity and sediment velocity. To measure velocity distributions of two-phase flows, it is necessary to use sophisticated instruments which can separate velocity profiles of two-phases. For bubbly flows, PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) or PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) has given fairly good velocity profiles of two-phases. However, for sediment-laden flows, the applications of PIV or PTV has not been so successful, because the sediment particles introduced to the flow kept the images from being analyzed. A new algorithm, which consists of several image analysis methods, is proposed to analyze sediment-laden flows. For detection algorithm, threshold method, edge detection method, and thinning method are adapted, and for finding matching pair PIV and PTV routines are combined. The proposed method can (1) detect sediment particles with irregular boundaries, (2) remove reflected images and scattered images, and (3) discriminate tracer particles from reflected images of sediment particles.

A 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model has been applied to understand water circulation pattern in Lake Deacheong. The simulation results have been used in sediment transport modeling. A sediment transport model using a particle tracking method has been developed to simulate sediment transport in the ocean, river and reservoir. The model was applied to estimate transport track of particulate pollutants in the lake. The hydrodynamic model was verified for water level variations and showed good agreements. Through the results we found out that water velocity is less than 5 cnysec for mean yearly flow and more than 120 cnysec at some points for the simulated flood flow. The incoming sediment particles in flood season reached into the Daecheong Dam. But the incoming sediment particles in the mean flow were settled down at riverbed and didn't move into the dam. These results can be used in setting up water quality management plan in the lake.
The development of bars and sediment sorting processes in the braided channels with the mixed grain sizes are investigated experimentally in this study. The sediment in the steep slope channels discharges with highly fluctuation. However, it discharges with relatively periodic cycles in the mild slope channels. The characteristics and amplitudes of the dominant bars are examined by double fourier analysis. The dimensionless sediment particle size decreases as the longitudinal bed elevation increases. However, the size increases as the longitudinal bed elevation decreases. As the dimensionless critical tractive force in the surface layer ratio to the force in the subsurface layer increases, the surface geometric mean size of sediments and the dimensionless sediment particle size decrease. This means that coarse matrix is formed with the dimensionless tractive force by the sediment selective sorting.

A sediment transport calculation considering cohesive force is proposed to deal with the transport phenomena of cohesive sediment. In the proposed calculation, each sand particle is assumed to be surrounded by a thin layer of mud. The critical Shields parameter and bed-load sediment transport rate are modified to include the cohesive force acting on the sand particle. The proposed calculation is incorporated into a two-way coupled fluid-structure-sediment interaction model, and applied to wave-induced topographic change of artificial shallows. Numerical results show that an increase in the content ratio of the mud, cohesive resistance force per unit surface area and water content cause increases in the critical Shields parameter and decreases in the bed-load sediment transport rate, reducing the topographic change of the shallow without changing its trend. This suggests that mixing mud in the pores of the sand particles can reduce the topographic change of shallows.
Rates of the sedimentation and particle mixing have been estimated by applying uranium-series disequilibrium techniques to three sediment cores collected from the korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS) site between the clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones (CCFZ) of the Equatorial Pacific. Sedimentation rates based on the profiles of excess /SUP 230/Th activity and /SUP 230/ Th/SUB xs//SUP 232/ Th activity ratios at the southeastern part of the study area were estimated to be in the order of a few millimeters per thousand year, while at the northwestern part a factor of ten lower. Excess activities of /SUP 230/Th and /SUP 230/Th ratios showed intervals of constant values in the upper part of the sediment cores, probably generated by biological particle mixing. A "two-box" advection-diffusion steady state mixing model was employed in order to estimate particle mixing rates in the upper and the lower layers, based on the distribution profiles of excess /SUP 210/Pb activities. Particle mixing coefficients were estimated to be in the order of 10$^1$ cm$^2$/y in the upper layer and 10/SUP -1/-10/SUP 0/ cm$^2$/y in the lower layer.
