In order to consider the sediment layer's effect to total acoustic field, we composed a 3 layered fluid model of 2 sediment layers by adding an additional layer to the Pekeris model and found solutions by using Green's function, boundary conditions and Sommerfeld radiation condition. The modes were divided into discrete modes and virtual modes, and confirmed that the characteristic equation to find discrete modes was same as that of Tolstoy and Clay for normal modes. Also, we confirmed that under similar conditions the 3 layered model showed same results as that of Pekeris model. We believe this 3 layered model can be used to study the sediment's effect on the virtual mode of near field.
The purpose of this study was to simulate the reduction effect of soil loss in the Yongdam reservoir watershed using SWAT model. To evaluate accuracy for flow and sediment yield of SWAT model, calibration was performed for the period from Jan. 2002 to Dec. 2003, and the verification for Jan. 2005 to Dec. 2005. The calibration and the verification were carried out using data observed at the Cheoncheon gaging station. The $R^2$ and EI values in terms of a flow were 0.8 and 0.78 respectively for calibration, whereas they for verification were 0.88 and 0.86 respectively. In terms of a sediment yield, they were 0.7 and 0.48 respectively for calibration, whereas for verification were 0.64 and 0.54 respectively. As a results from model simulation, annual mean soil loss rates in terms of forest, paddy and upland were 0.02 ton/ha/yr, 0.15 ton/ha/yr and 7.58 ton/ha/yr, respectively. The results show that the land use type of a upland has more significant impact on a total soil loss as well as a sediment yield than other types of land use. The sediment delivery ratio was determined to be about 0.35. In this study 2 land cover change scenarios for upland area were considered. These scenarios were used an input to SWAT model in order to evaluate their impact on soil loss and sediment delivery. The results show that a reduction of the upland area would reduce the soil loss and sediment yield.

The universal soil loss equation (USLE), a model for estimating the potential soil loss, has been used not only in research areas but also in establishing national policies in South Korea. Despite its wide applicability, USLE cannot adequately address the effect of seasonal variances. To overcome this limit, the ArcGIS-based Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion (ArcSATEEC) has been developed as an alternative model. Although the field-scale (< 100 ㎡) application of this model produced reliable estimation results, it is still challenging to validate accuracy of the model estimation because it only estimates potential soil losses, not the actual sediment yield. Therefore, in this study, a method for estimating actual soil loss based on the ArcSATEEC model was suggested. The model was applied to eight watersheds in South Korea to estimate sediment yields. Correction factor was introduced for each watershed, and the estimated sediment yield was compared with that of the estimated yield by LOAD ESTimator (LOADEST). Sediment yield estimation for all watersheds exhibited reliable results, and the validity of the proposed correction factor was confirmed, suggesting the correction factor needs to be considered in estimating actual soil loss.

Due to their slow degradation properties, hydrophobic organic contaminants in estuarine sediment have been a concern for risks to human health and aquatic organisms. Studies of fate and transport of these contaminants in estuaries are further complicated by the fact that hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in these regions are complex, involving processes with various temporal and spatial scales. In order to simulate and quantify long-term attenuation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in the Elizabeth River, VA, we develop a modeling approach, which employs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's water quality model, WASP, and encompasses key physical and chemical processes that govern long-term fate and transport of PAHs in the river. In this box-model configuration, freshwater inflows mix with ocean saline water and tidally averaged dispersion coefficients are obtained by calibration using measured salinity data. Sediment core field data is used to estimate the net deposition/erosion rate, treating only either the gross resuspension or deposition rate as the calibration parameter. Once calibrated, the model simulates fate and transport PAHs following the loading input to the river in 1967, nearly 4 decades ago. Sediment PAH concentrations are simulated over 1967-2022 and model results for Year 2002 are compared with field data measured at various locations of the river during that year. Sediment concentrations for Year 2012 and 2022 are also projected for various remedial actions. Since all the model parameters are based on empirical field data, model predictions should reflect responses based on the assumptions that have been governing the fate and sediment transport for the past decades.
The subject of sediment transport has been studied for centuries by engineers and river morpohologists. Many of the complex aspects of sediment transport are yet to be understood, and remain among the challenging subject for future studies. In this study, the finite element model is applied to various hypothetical channels. On the basis of the flow analysis results, sediment transport analysis is conducted using 3-different optional equations, and the results are compared with experimental results. For the purpose of predicting the sediment movements in natural river, RMA model is applied to Geum-River. It turned out to be very effective tool to predict various aspects of river evolution and the effects of hydraulic structures. The simulation results are also linked to the Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The harbor siltation by longshore sediment transports has become a serious problem on the East Coast of Korea. A reasonable prediction of the longshore sediment rate is important to approach the siltation problem effectively. In the recently developed 1-line model, the empirical constants of the sediment transport formula, which include the absolute quantity of sediment transport rate and the spatial distribution of breaking wave height by wave deformation, are treated as calibration parameters. Since these constants should be determined by the very long-term shoreline data, the longshore sediment rates are much more reasonable values. The method was applied to Hupo Beach, which has experienced heavy siltation. The authors also discuss long-term shoreline change using aerial photos and the observed wave-induced current patterns. According to the result, the SW-direction sediment transport rate was $146,892m^3/year$, and the NE direction was $2,694,450m^3/year$ at Hupo Beach for the last 11 years. The siltation in Hupo Harbor might be affected by the NE-direction sediment transport from Hupo Beach.
In this study, the following conclusions were obtained from an investigation of the effect of the simulation time step on the simulation results of the two-dimensional, vertically averaged sediment transport model SED2D and an analysis of the deposited sediment distribution in suspended sediments of reservoirs according to grain size. The simulation time step has a significant effect on the deposited sediment distribution in a reservoir. In particular, if the simulation time step is set to be excessively large, physically invalid results are obtained. Additionally, in order to determine an appropriate simulation time step for SED2D, the selection of a simulation time step that will allow the analysis of the suspended sediment concentration profile at the main points of the simulation domain is necessary. The deposited sediment distribution in a reservoir according to grain size, including suspended sediments of clay, silt, and sand, was successfully simulated. Such information will prove valuable in application to the establishment of efficient management and reduction measures of reservoir sediment deposits.

In the last decade, many methods such as greet chamber, reservoir, or debris barrier, have been utilized to manage and prevent muddy water problem. The Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS) has been thought to be one of the most effective methods to trap sediment effectively. The VFS are usually installed at the edge of agricultural areas adjacent to stream or drainage ditches, and it has been shown that the VFS effectively removes pollutants transported with upland runoff. But, if the VFS is installed without any scientific analysis of rainfall-runoff characteristics, soil erosion, and sediment analysis, it may not reduce the sediment as much as expected. Although Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model has been used worldwide for many hydrologic and Non-Point Source Pollution (NPSP) analysis at a watershed scale. but it has many limitations in simulating the VFS. Because it considers only 'filter strip width' when the model estimates sediment trapping efficiency, and does not consider the routing of sediment with overland flow option which is expected to maximize the sediment trapping efficiency from upper agricultural subbasin to lower spatially-explicit filter strip. Therefore, the SWAT overland flow option between landuse-subbasins with sediment routing capability was enhanced with modifications in SWAT watershed configuration and SWAT engine. The enhanced SWAT can simulate the sediment trapping efficiency of the VFS in the similar way as the desktop VFSMOD-w system does. Also it now can simulate the effects of overland flow from upper subbasin to reflect the increased runoff volume at the receiving subbasin, which is what is occurring at the field if no diversion channel is installed. In this study, the enhanced SWAT model was applied to small watershed located at Jaun-ri in South Korea to simulate diversion channel and spatially-explicit VFS. It was found that approximately sediment can be reduced by 31%, 65%, 68%, with diversion channel, the VFS, and the VFS with diversion channel, respectively.

Successful sediment management at the watershed scale requires an understanding of the erosion, transport and sedimentation processes at the specific site scale. However, studies on the sediment runoff characteristics in a small uppermost watershed, which serves as a sediment supply function, are very rare. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the fluctuations in major sediment supply areas and sediment runoff in the uppermost mountain small watershed, and for this purpose, ArcSWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tools with GIS interface) was applied to the Woldong reservoir catchment located in Gosam-myeon, Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. The model results were manually calibrated using the monitoring data of the Woldong reservoir sedimentation rate from 2005 to 2007. It was estimated that annual average of 34.4 tons/year of sediment was discharged from the Woldong reservoir basin. This estimate almost coincided with the monitoring data of the Woldong reservoir during the low flow period but tended to be somewhat underestimated during the high flow period. Although the SWAT model does not fully reflect the erosion process of gully and in-channel, this underestimation is probably due to the spatial connectivity of sediment transport and the storage and reactivation of the sediment being transported. Most of the forested hillslopes with a well-developed organic horizon were evaluated as having a low risk of erosion, while the places with the highest risk of erosion were predicted to be distributed in the logged area with some weeds or shrubs (classified as pasture) with relatively steeper slopes, and in the bare land. The results of this study are expected to be useful in developing strategies for sediment control and reservoir management.
Prediction of total sediment load is essential in an extensive range of problems such as the design of the dead volume of dams, design of stable channels, sediment transport in the rivers, calculation of bridge piers degradation, prediction of sand and gravel mining effects on river-bed equilibrium, determination of the environmental impacts and dredging necessities. This paper is aimed to investigate and predict the total sediment load of the Wadi Arbaat in Eastern Sudan. The study was estimated the sediment load by separate total sediment load into bedload and Suspended Load (SL), independently. Although the sediment records are not sufficient to construct the discharge-sediment yield relationship and Sediment Rating Curve (SRC), the total sediment loads were predicted based on the discharge and Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC). The turbidity data NTU in water quality has been used for prediction of the SSC in the estimation of suspended Sediment Yield (SY) transport of Wadi Arbaat. The sediment curves can be used for the estimation of the suspended SYs from the watershed area. The amount of information available for Khor Arbaat case study on sediment is poor data. However, the total sediment load is essential for the optimal control of the sediment transport on Khor Arbaat sediment and the protection of the dams on the upper gate area. The results show that the proposed model is found to be considered adequate to predict the total sediment load.
