This paper explores how to teach Chinese, using multi-media resources such as Chinese dramas and focusing on one of Jin Yong's dramas, The Return of the Condor Heroes. The purpose of this study is to develop teaching methodologies for university students learning Chinese through drama to integrate language skills: enhancing communicative competence and understanding Chinese cultures. First, the overview of previous studies provides several cases of foreign language education using drama. Teaching Chinese through drama can be an integrative education because students can develop their communicative competence as well as understand the cultures of the target language. In other words, the contexts of drama may offer rich sources of the history of China, Han Chinese ethnocentrism, and knowledge of Chinese literature as well as geography. Second, this study applies the principles of Tomlinson (2010) for materials development in language teaching into the case of Chinese drama. It concentrates on Jin Yong's The Return of the Condor Heroes that the author has used in the Chinese language courses for three years. It examines the characteristics of the drama for developing effective ways of teaching and learning Chinese language and culture. Furthermore, it discusses the impact of using drama on changes in students' pervasive perceptions about unnecessity of Chinese classical literature. Third, this paper presents some sample lessons which may help teachers to develop understanding of how to organize lessons through drama. Finally, it illustrates university students' opinions about using drama to learn Chinese.
South Korean users of second language have been often heard such assessments as "you don't' have confidence" and "your writing is good, but your speech is poor." Some scholars have pointed out the teaching method as the cause. In other countries, the mainstreamargument is that students can have practical language experience in a more liberal atmosphere through small group-oriented classes rather than through teacher-centered whole-group activities in foreign language curriculums. Many teachers are using various learning tools or a combination of different teaching methods to minimize the shortcomings of the grammar translation method. However, unlike other studies, the present study focuses on improving the grammar translation teaching method itself.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of early childhood teachers in teaching young children with language development delays. Methods: Eight early childhood teachers with experience teaching children with language development delays were interviewed. The collected data were analyzed through transcription, coding, and theme generation processes, resulting in three main themes and seven sub-themes. Results: First, early childhood teachers mentioned difficulties in communication due to language development delays, the need for communication support with peers, and a lack of support from families. Second, the guidance for young children with language development delays was provided by considering the characteristics of these children and through collaboration among various stakeholders. Third, early childhood teachers requested tailored training for teaching young children with language development delays. They also called for the establishment of a cooperative system among early childhood education institutions, families, and specialized agencies. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the research findings, a discussion was conducted on the support needed for guiding young children with language development delays, and suggestions were made for further research in this area.
When English language teachers are deciding on their priorities for teaching pronunciation, it is imperative to know what kind of differences and errors are most likely to interfere with communication, and what special problems particular first-language speakers will have with English pronunciation. In other words, phoneme discrimination skill is an integral part of speech processing for the EFL learners' learning to converse in English. Training using sound visualization technique can be effective in improving second language learners' perceptions and productions of segmental and suprasegmental speech contrasts. This study assessed the efficacy of a pronunciation training that provided visual feedback for EFL learners acquiring pitch and durational contrasts to produce and perceive English phonemic distinctions. The subjects' ability to produce and to perceive novel English words was tested in two contexts before and after training; words in isolation and words in sentences. In comparison with an untrained control group, trainees showed improved perceptual and productive performance, transferred their knowledge to new contexts, and maintained their improvement three months after training. These findings support the feasibility of learner-centered programs using sound visualization technique for English language pronunciation instruction.

Learners and users of a second language have to resort to a variety of conversational strategies or structures to enable them to communicate effectively and competently. Factors affecting effective communication among English as a second or English as foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners are diverse in nature because of different socio-cultural backgrounds. Gambits as a conversational strategy are used to a large extent and teachers must be made aware of such conversational strategies used by English as second or foreign language learners. Thus, studies focusing on conversational strategies among ESL/EFL learners in the English language classroom are important in order to identify the types of conversational strategies used and to help teachers to understand the appropriate conversational strategies and structures. Such understanding can be used to guide learners to use correct conversational strategies when communicating in English. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of gambits as a communication strategy in conversation among non-native speakers of English in an English as a second language(ESL) context based on Kellers conversational strategy signals. Intelligibility has been widely regarded as an appropriate goal for second language pronunciation teaching. Yet there are few empirical studies that focus on the intelligibility of Korean learners' pronunciation. Therefore, this mixed-methods study examined the relationship among native-like pronunciation, intelligible pronunciation, phonological fluency and comprehensibility. Furthermore, this study investigated how native-like pronunciation and intelligible pronunciation are measured differently in terms of actual pronunciation skills. In addition, this study examined how these two pronunciation styles mutually influence each other. The results of this study show that achieving native-like pronunciation is a much more difficult goal than achieving intelligible pronunciation. It further shows that foreign accented pronunciation has little to do with comprehensibility while better intelligibility is needed for clearer comprehensibility. To achieve better intelligibility, this study recommends pronunciation teaching based on segments, suprasegmentals and fluency as the focus on suprasegmentals and fluency teaching are more important to achieve a native-like pronunciation. Besides the focus on phonology, there are other social factors which could influence the evaluation of native-like pronunciation, but are not part of this study. These findings are expected to contribute not only to a better understanding of pronunciation, but also to a more comprehensive reevaluation and informed direction of pronunciation teaching and research.
The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers' perspectives on content-based instruction (CBI) in English at a higher education in Korea. Based on the assumption that content-based instruction programs could be successful if teachers were actively involved not only in transmitting the content knowledge but also in students' development in the second or foreign language competence, the study explores teachers' treatments of language in relation to the students' language development in CBI classes. Research questions were related to five areas such as (1) the goals of CBI programs, (2) difficulties in CBI classes, (3) the use of native language, (4) teaching strategies and techniques, and (5) factors that affect the success of the CBI programs. Data gathered from 24 college instructors from a large university located in the metropolitan city of Korea. Results of the study indicated that college instructors of CBI programs had keen interest in developing students' language competence, experienced difficulties in designing course syllabus for mixed leveled group of students, rarely used Korean in class and used successful teaching strategies. Also factors needed to improve the CBI programs were recommended at the end of the study. Results of the study implied that teachers needed to be more aware of the students' learning process of English and to be more communicative with students in English in class. Further studies were needed in relation to the CBI courses for students of different age levels.
Language plays a central role in everyday communication activities. Therefore, an individual need to be able to use language to communicate with confidence and without fear. One of the major fears that people have is the fear of communication. This fear is most of the time due to a lack of confidence in communicating in a particular language or due to poor proficiency in the language. In some cases it can also be due to attitudinal problems. In the context of teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language, students can have a great fear of using English with confidence. This fear can be an acute one and thus students may avoid using English to communicate. However, non native speakers of English need to be highly competent in the use of the English language for a variety of communicative purposes particularly in meeting the challenges of globalisation and that of the digital age. This article presents some insights on language apprehension found among communication undergraduates who are non native speakers of English.
This paper critically reviewed the role of negative feedback in second language acquisition with a focus on recasts based on the findings of recent research investigating the effects of recasts on second language acquisition. First, recasts as negative feedbacks or negative evidence were reviewed in terms of Pinker's four criteria: the evidence of existence, availability, use, and necessity of recasts in second language acquisition. Second, the issue of the nature of recasts, whether they have benefits in SLA as a negative or positive evidence, was discussed with reference to Leeman(2003)'s research findings. Then, in relation to availability and use of recasts, the issue of the extent that they are noticed by learners was reviewed based on the findings from Philp(2003)'s study. Finally, the limitations of these two studies and the research orientation of future study were mentioned.
This study attempts to apply process drama in teaching Korean speaking. For that goal, the first part of the study introduces the main features of process drama exploring the possible use of teaching Korean speaking, and the second part presents a concrete example of developing a unit of the Sejong intermediate Korean conversation coursebook which was designed using a process drama method. Process drama is a process-oriented drama activity which progresses only with the teacher and students' spontaneous participation. With its unique meaning-oriented interaction paradigm, it has been suggested as an effective way of teaching and learning a foreign language. Since it emphasizes students' spontaneity, cooperation, and authentic communication, it commonly provides plenty of opportunities for students to interact in a meaningful context. Despite its effectiveness in teaching speaking, it has rarely been used in KFL contexts. Considering the limited opportunities to practice speaking in KFL classrooms, using a communication-rich activity such as process drama would be an optimal solution. This study, therefore, examines possible application of process drama in teaching Korean speaking, and introduces sample speaking materials designed for KFL intermediate learners.
