  • The use of electric arc furnace has been increasing as the steel consumption is increasing and the operation technique of electric arc furnace are developing. But as the use of electric arc furnace is increased, the furnace have produced the adverse effects of power quality: voltage and current harmonics, voltage and current imbalances, low power factor, and voltage flicker. One of the power quality problems, the harmonic have the characteristics of the time-varying and non-linear. This paper analyzed the harmonics for the various operation conditions of electric arc furnace. The power system model with electric arc furnace have been made, and the harmonic's effects on the power system has been analyzed according to the various operating conditions, first melting, second melting, so on. Also, the filter reducing the harmonic components have been designed and its effects on the power system have been examined.

  • Ultrasonic is a powerful nondestructive technique for getting the information of flaws and material properties of in-services facilities. We prepared 4 different 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V specimens by Isothermal aging at $630^{\circ}C$. We evaluated material degradation using ultrasonic parameters, velocity, attenuation and harmonic generation. Attenuation and nonlinear parameter derived from harmonic generation efficiency increased as degradation. Especially the second harmonic of the fundamental wave in the 1,820h aging material was observed to exceed 20dB more than that in the un-aged material. But velocity remained virtually the same for all specimens. We concluded that nonlinear parameter and attenuation are sensitive to material degradation, but velocity was not. It'll be a good parameter for evaluating the material degradation.

  • In this paper, a highly efficiency power amplifier is presented for multi-band antenna system. The class F power amplifier operating in dual-band designed with one LDMOSFET. An operating frequency of power amplifier is 900 MHz and 2.14 GHz respectively Matching networks and harmonic control circuits of amplifier are designed by using the unit cell of composite right/left-handed(CRLH) transmission line(TL) realized with lumped elements. The CRLH TL can lead to metamaterial transmission line with the dual-band holing capability. The dual-band operation of the CRLH TL is achieved by the frequency offset and the nonlinear phase slope of the CRLH TL for the matching network of the power amplifier. Because the control of all harmonic components for high efficiency is very difficult, we have controled only the second- and third-harmonics to obtain the high efficiency with the CRLH TL. Also, the proposed power amplifier has been realized by using the harmonic control circuit for not only the output matching network, but also the input matching network for better efficiency.

  • Apertures and PBG(Photonic Band Gap) has been employed on the ground plane in the coupled line filter simultaneously. In order to observe the maximum bandwidth, we used the line gap 0.2mm which is can be made in our lab. Band-pass filter type is four-stage coupled strip line filter. Teflon has been used for the substrate ($\varepsilon$$\sub$r/=3.2). The center frequency and the bandwidth are 2.18GHz and 230MHz, respectively. The bandwidth is broaden from 230MHz to 310MHz (80Mhz, about 34.7%) by aperture effect and harmonic frequencies are suppressed to 20-30dB by PBG effect. So the harmonic frequencies have been suppressed by the PBG effect and the bandwidth are broaden by aperture effect.

  • We examined the mechanism of generation of higher harmonics by theoretically analyzing the frequency characteristics of a narrow-band surface wave generated by a laser beam with line-arrayed slit masks. We experimentally analyzed the effects of slit opening width and laser intensity on the acoustic nonlinearity of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy by using single-slit and line-arrayed slit masks. The magnitude of the harmonic wave depended on the slit opening width. In our experiment, we generated a 1.75-MHz surface wave by using an arrayed slit with intervals of 1.67 mm. The magnitude of the second harmonic component decreased about by 80% when the slit opening width was increased from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm. In addition, the relationship between the magnitudes of the fundamental and the second harmonic wave showed good linearity, which agreed well with the typical behavior of acoustic nonlinearity.

  • We analyze the nonlinearity of chiral media and coupled-mode theory of chiral multilayers. In first topic, second order nonlinear coupled equations are constructed and a phase matchine method is suggested. This approach can be developed to higher order nonlinearity and electric-field-induced second harmonic generation. In second topic, coupled mode equation in chiral multilayers is constructed, and solved for both codirectional coupling and contradirectional coupling. There is a previous formulation about chiral mutilayers[1] with 4$\times$4 matrix but it did not give detail results, so this approach will be compared with that.

  • Quasi-phase-match (QPM) can be realized by means of one-dimensional spatial modulation of second-order nonlinear susceptibility and has advantages over the conventional bulk phase-matching method because QPM can not only utilize the largest component of second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor, but also can circumvent walk-off effect. • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the harmonic control circuit based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TLs) is presented to reduce the phase noise without the reduction of the frequency tuning range and miniaturize the circuit size. The phase noise is reduced by the novel harmonic control circuit having the short impedances for the second- and third-harmonic components. The proposed harmonic control circuit is designed by using the CRLH TLs with the dual-band characteristic by the frequency offset and phase slope of the CRLH TLs. The high-Q resonator has been used to reduce the phase noise, but has the problem of the frequency tuning range reduction. However, the frequency tuning range of the proposed VCO has not been reduced because the phase noise has been reduced without the high-Q resonator. The miniaturization of the circuit size is achieved by using the CRLH TLs instead of the conventional right-handed (RH) TLs. The phase noise of VCO is -119.17 ~ -117.50 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz in the tuning range of 5.731 ~ 5.938 GHz.

  • A low phase noise frequency synthesizer at X-Band which employs the subharmonic injection locking was designed and tested. The designed frequency synthesizer consists of a 1.75 GHz master oscillator - which also operates as a harmonic generator - and a 10.5 GHz slave oscillator. A 1.75 GHz master oscillator based on PLL technique used two transistors - one constitutes the active part of VCO and the other operates as a buffer amplifier as well as harmonic generator. The first stage operates a fixed locked oscillator and using the BJT transistor whose cutoff frequency is 45 GHz, the second stage is designed, operating as a harmonic generator. The 6th harmonic which is produced from the harmonic generator is injected into the following slave oscillator which also behaves as an amplifier having about 45 dB gain. The realized frequency synthesizer has a 7.4 V/49 mA, -0.5 V/4 mA of the low DC power consumption, 4.53 dBm of output power, and a phase noise of -95.09 dBc/Hz and -108.90 dBc/Hz at the 10 kHz and 100 kHz offset frequency, respectively.

  • The molecular orientational dynamics of the nonlinear optical(NLO) side-chain polymer N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol-poly (pphenylene terephthalates) have been studied using nonlinear optical responses as measured by second harmonic generation (SHG). A new pulsed corona poling is used to orient the NLO chromophores and the polymer segments into the noncentrosymmetric structure required to obtain the SHG signal. By corona poling of negative high voltage pulses with variable repetition rates (between 0.5 and 10 ㎑) at temperature between 25$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$, well below and about the glass transition temperature 70$^{\circ}C$, the side-chain chromophores and the polymer chain contour rearrange themselves and create the domain structure observed by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The pulsed corona voltage enhances the orientational ordering of the NLO chromophores and also significantly influences the growth of SHG signal and the improved relaxation behavior after the poling field is removed, reducing the visible damage to the polymer film dramatically. This new pulsed corona poling experiment gave direct in situ evidence that the NLO chromophore and the polymer backbone undergo anisotropic rearrangement during the poling process.
