  • In this study, we investigated the effects of extrusion ratio and extrusion temperature on the microstructure and tensile properties of extruded Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN6) alloy. As the extrusion ratio and temperature increase, dynamic recrystallization during extrusion is promoted, leading to the formation of a fully recrystallized microstructure with increased grain size. Additionally, the increases in extrusion ratio and temperature lead to texture strengthening, exhibiting a higher maximum texture intensity. The extruded materials contain three types of secondary phases, i.e., Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, with irregular or polygonal shapes. The quantity, size, distribution, and area fraction of the second-phase particles are nearly identical between the two materials. Despite its larger grain size, the tensile yield strength of the material extruded at 450 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 25 (450-25) is higher than that of the material extruded at 325 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 10 (325-10), which is mainly attributed to the stronger texture hardening effect of the former. The ultimate tensile strength is similar in the two materials, owing to the higher work hardening rate in the 325-10 extrudate. Despite differences in grain size and recrystallization fraction, numerous twins are formed throughout the specimen during tensile deformation in both materials; consequently, the two materials exhibit nearly the same tensile elongation.

  • This paper reports a simple and versatile technique for generating highly controllable sinusoidal nanostructures on the surface of poly-(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The sinusoidal features were generated by oxidizing PDMS slabs with oxygen plasma, then stretching them by wrapping around a cylinderical surface, and finally allowing them to relax. The wavelength and amplitude could be finely controlled by varying the fabrication conditions such as duration of oxidation, diameter of the glass cylinder, duration of stretching, thickness of the PDMS slabs, and temperature during the second hardening process. The varied trends of the buckling patterns were characterized by using an atomic force microscope.

  • A Digital X-ray imaging system using Compton backscattering has been developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile and mass loss of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft from density variation. A slit-type camera was designed to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material, from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the lap-joint is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from a Compton backscatter A-scan to obtain the thickness of each layer including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer and the sealant. Quantitative information such as location and width of planar corrosion in the lap splices of fuselages is obtained by deconvolution using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method(BFGS method): A simple reconstruction model is also introduced to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter data due to attenuation effects attributed to beam hardening and quantum noise.

  • The first part of this two-part paper discussed some basic considerations on bond strength and its effect on strain localization and plastic deformation capacity of cracked structural concrete, and analytically evaluated the impacts of the hardening behavior of reinforcing steel and concrete quality on the basis of the Tension Chord Model. This second part assesses the impacts of the most frequently encountered construction details of existing concrete structures which may not satisfy current design code requirements: bar ribbing, bar spacing, and concrete cover thickness. It further evaluates the impacts of the additional structure-specific features bar diameter and crack spacing. It concludes with some considerations on the application of the findings in practice and an outlook on future research needs.

  • In this paper we present geometrically exact Kirchhoff's initially curved planar beam model. The theoretical formulation of the proposed model is based upon Reissner's geometrically exact beam formulation presented in classical works as a starting point, but with imposed Kirchhoff's constraint in the rotated strain measure. Such constraint imposes that shear deformation becomes negligible, and as a result, curvature depends on the second derivative of displacements. The constitutive law is plasticity with linear hardening, defined separately for axial and bending response. We construct discrete approximation by using Hermite's polynomials, for both position vector and displacements, and present the finite element arrays and details of numerical implementation. Several numerical examples are presented in order to illustrate an excellent performance of the proposed beam model.

  • In the TV manufacturing industry, a demand for chic design of TVs is increasing. As a reult of this trend in TV design, more curved surfaces in a TV cabinet are introduced, which enforces the use of fixers to combine a front cabinet with a TV main body. In this paper, we introduce a robot system for attaching various types of fixers to a TV cabinet. The developed system consists of three main blocks. The first one is the dispensing block, in which transferred cabinet is centered and UV adhesives are dispensed on the cabinet. The second one is the fixer attaching block, in which a cabinet is centered again and fixers are attached to pre-determined places on a cabinet by a robot with several end effectors. The last one is the UV hardening block, in which very strong ultraviolet rays are applied to the cabinet for attaching fixers tightly to the cabinet. The developed system is successfully adopted in a TV manufacturing process.

  • A unified elastic-viscoplastic ocnstitutive model based on dislocation density considerations is described. A combination of a kinetic equation, which describes the mechanical response of a material at a given microstructure in terms of dislocation glide and evolution equations for internal variables characterizing the microstructure provide the constitutive equations of the Model. Microstructural features of the material, such as the grain size, spacing between second phase particles etc., are directly implemented in the constitutive equations. The internal variables are associated with the total dislocation density in the simple version of the model. The model has a modular structure and can be adjusted to describe a particular type of metal forming processes.

  • A successful methodology for modelling controlled destruction and progressive collapse of 2D reinforced concrete frames is presented in this paper. The strategy is subdivided into several aspects including the failure mechanism creation, and dynamic motion in failure represented with multibody system (MBS) simulation that are used to jointly capture controlled demolition. First phase employs linear elasto-plastic analysis with isotropic hardening along with softening plastic hinge concept to investigate the complete failure of structure, leading to creation of final failure mechanism that behaves like MBS. Second phase deals with simulation and control of the progressive collapse of the structure up to total demolition, using the nonlinear dynamic analysis, with conserving/decaying energy scheme which is performed on MBS. The contact between structure and ground is also considered in simulation of collapse process. The efficiency of the proposed methodology is proved with several numerical examples including six story reinforced concrete frame structures.

  • In gradient-dependent plasticity theory, the yield strength depends on the Laplacian of an equivalent plastic strain measure (hardening parameter), and the consistency condition results in a differential equation with respect to the plastic multiplier. The plastic multiplier is then discretized in addition to the usual discretization of the displacements, and the consistency condition is solved simultaneously with the equilibrium equations. The disadvantage is that the plastic multiplier requires a Hermitian interpolation that has four degrees of freedom at each node. Instead of using a Hermitian interpolation, in this article, a 3-node incompatible (trigonometric) interpolation is proposed for the plastic multiplier. This incompatible interpolation uses only the function values of each node, but it is continuous across element boundaries and its second-order derivatives exist within the elements. It greatly reduces the degrees of freedom for a problem, and is shown through a numerical example on localization to yield good results.
