Stress response to the seawater acclimation in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) smolt was investigated. Salt concentration of rearing water was gradually increased for 3 days from freshwater to seawater (30 ppt salt level). The changes of serum concentrations of cortisol as a primary stress indicator, and as secondary indicators, glucose (GLC), lactate (LAC), triglyce.ide (TG), cholesterol (CHOL), sodium ion $(Na^+)$, chloride ion $(Cl^-)$ and enzyme activities (alanine aminotransferase, ALT: aspartate aminotrasferase, AST; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH) were quantified during the acclimation experiment. Among them, cortisol, LAC, TG, CHOL, ALT, AST concentrations showed rapid increase at the first exposure to the 10ppt salt level (day 1), and began to decrease to the constant values after day 2 of adaptation at 20ppt salt level. However, LDH concentration tended to decrease during the whole experimental period. $Na^+\;and\;Cl^-$ showed slight decrease at day 1, and increased to a little bit higher values after day 2 rather than those in freshwater. All the fishes started on taking a food after day 4 of seawater adaptation. From these results, to reduce osmotic shock inducible stress to fish in seawater acclimation, gradual increase of salt levels is recommended.

Mud, iron oxide, plaster, salt, minerals, and dissolved metals are sequentially deposited in accordance with the increasing concentration of seawater. In this paper, by using the physical characteristics of the seawater, we propose a new vacuum heat-transfer technology to subsequently obtain the proportion of the dissolved components in a cost-effective manner. Based on the vacuum heat-transfer characteristics of seawater, we comprehensively divide the seawater resource processes into the following four processes: (1) the salt concentration process to the saturation concentration, (2) crystallization process for salt formation, (3) mineral precipitation, and (4) remaining of dissolved metals.
The performance of an electrodialyzer for concentrating seawater is predicted by means of a computer simulation, which includes the following five steps; Step 1 mass transport; Step 2 current density distribution; Step 3 cell voltage; Step 4 NaCl concentration in a concentrated solution and energy consumption; Step 5 limiting current density. The program is developed on the basis of the following assumption; (1) Solution leakage and electric current leakage in an electrodialyzer are negligible. (2) Direct current electric resistance of a membrane includes the electric resistance of a boundary layer formed on the desalting surface of the membrane due to concentration polarization. (3) Frequency distribution of solution velocity ratio in desalting cells is equated by the normal distribution. (4) Current density i at x distant from the inlets of desalting cells is approximated by the quadratic equation. (5) Voltage difference between the electrodes at the entrance of desalting cells is equal to the value at the exits. (6) Limiting current density of an electrodialyzer is defined as average current density applied to an electrodialyzer when current density reaches the limit of an ion exchange membrane at the outlet of a desalting cell in which linear velocity and electrolyte concentration are the least. (7) Concentrated solutions are extracted from concentrating cells to the outside of the process. The validity of the computer simulation model is demonstrated by comparing the computed results with the performance of electrodialyzers operating in salt-manufacturing plants. The model makes it possible to discuss optimum specifications and operating conditions of a practical-scale electrodialyzer.

In this study, we investigated NO oxidation characteristic that depends on available chlorine concentration and temperature of seawater which is treated by un-divided electrolysis. Reactant gas passed through bubbling reactors which is filled with electrolyzed water and then NO concentration change was analyzed. In the closed-loop electrolysis system, concentration of available chlorine increased with electrolysis time. The higher oxidation rate of NO to $NO_2$ was obtained with the higher concentration of available chlorine. Oxidation of NO was fast when temperature of electrolyzed water was high, in the case of same concentration of available chlorine.
Due to advancement of the industry, operation of a device in a harsh environment is increasing. Especially, the marine environment contains Cl- ions which causes localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion of stainless steel and various metals. In this study, electrochemical corrosion behaviors of austenitic stainless steel (STS 316L) and nickel alloy (Inconel 600) with different seawater concentrations (fresh water, seawater, mixed water) were investigated. The STS 316L and Inconel 600 were etched in 10% oxalic acid and composed of an austenitic phase. Results of Tafel analysis in seawater showed that STS 316L and Inconel 600 presented the highest corrosion current densities of 7.75 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and 1.11 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and the most negative pitting potentials of 0.94 V and 1.06 V, respectively. The maximum damage depths and surface damage ratio by pitting corrosion increased with chloride concentration. The STS 316L had higher PREN than Inconel 600. However, the surface damage and weight loss of Inconel 600 were superior to STS 316L. It was difficult to compare the pitting resistance of STS 316L based on Fe and Inconel 600 based on Ni with PREN simply.
Insoluble catalytic electrodes were fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering of Pt on Ti substrates and the performance of seawater electrolysis was compared in these electrodes to that is DSA electrodes. The Pt-sputtered insoluble catalytic electrodes were nearly 150 nm-thick with a roughness of $0.18{\mu}m$, which is 1/660 and 1/12 of these values for the DSA (dimensionally stable anodes) electrodes. The seawater electrolysis performance levels were determined through measurements of the NaOCl concentration, which was the main reaction product after electrolysis using artificial seawater. The NaOCl concentration after 2 h of electrolysis with artificial seawater, which has 3.5% NaCl normally, at current densities of 50, 80 and 140 mA/$cm^2$ were 0.76%, 1.06%, and 2.03%, respectively. A higher current density applied through the electrodes led to higher electrolysis efficiency. The efficiency reached nearly 58% in the Pt-sputtered samples after 2 h of electrolysis. The reaction efficiency of DSA showed higher values than that of the Pt-sputtered insoluble catalytic electrodes. One plausible reason for this is the higher specific surface area of the DSA electrodes; the surface cracks of the DSAs resulted in a higher specific surface area and higher reaction sites. Upon the electrolysis process, some Mg- and Ca-hydroxides, which were minor components in the artificial seawater, were deposited onto the surface of the electrodes, resulting in an increase in the electrical resistances of the electrodes. However, the extent of the increase ranged from 4% to 7% within an electrolysis time of 720 h.
Corrosion of the Cu alloy with 10wt% Ni in stagnant seawater with residual free chlorine was investigated. Despite that fact that Cu alloys are widely used for seawater applications due to their stubborn resistance to chloride attack, not much is known as to how the residual free chlorine in seawater affects corrosion of Cu and its alloys. In this work, immersion tests were conducted in the presence of different levels of chlorine for 90-10 Cu-Ni samples, one of the most frequently used Cu alloys for seawater application, mostly in shipbuilding. The results revealed no evidence for accelerated corrosion of the Cu-Ni alloy even in the presence of 5 ppm residual chlorine in seawater, signifying that the Cu-Ni alloy can be more tolerant to residual chlorine that has been commonly cited by the shipbuilding industry. However, comparison of polarization behavior of the alloy samples in the presence of different electrolytes with different concentrations of residual chlorine suggests that higher concentration of chlorine could increase the corrosion rate of the Cu-Ni alloy. Furthermore, it is suggested that microorganisms in the seawater could increase the corrosion rate of the Cu-Ni alloy by encouraging exfoliation of the corrosion product off the metal surface.

Behavioral and physiological responses of juvenile red seabream (Pagrus major) to different concentrations of ethanol were investigated. No swimming and no reaction to touching by a wooden stick was observed at 0.6% ethanol group in behavioral response, and survival rate was 100% after 5 hours of treatment. Red blood cell count, hematocrit and hemoglobin levels in plasma were not significantly different among all groups. AST activities in plasma significantly decreased as ethanol concentration increased. On the contrary, ALT activities in plasma significantly increased as ethanol concentration increased. Cortisol level in plasma was the lowest in 0.6% ethanol group. Glucose levels in plasma increased significantly when ethanol concentration increased more than 0.4%. Oxygen consumption of fish in 0.6% ethanol seawater was constantly lower than that of fish in control seawater from 2 hours after the exposure to ethanol seawater until the end of experiment.
Direct treatment of municipal wastewater by forward osmosis (FO) process was evaluated in terms of water flux decline, reverse salt diffusion, pollutants rejection and concentration efficiency by using synthetic seawater as the draw solution. It was found that when operating in PRO mode (active layer facing the draw solution), although the FO membrane exhibited higher osmotic water flux, more severe flux decline and reverse salt diffusion was also observed due to the more severe fouling of pollutants in the membrane support layer and accompanied fouling enhanced concentration polarization. In addition, although the water flux decline was shown to be lower for the FO mode (active layer facing the feed solution), irreversible membrane fouling was identified in both PRO and FO modes as the water flux cannot be restored to the initial value by physical flushing, highlighting the necessity of chemical cleaning in long-term operation. During the 7 cycles of filtration conducted in the experiments, the FO membrane exhibited considerably high rejection for TOC, COD, TP and $NH_4{^+}-N$ present in the wastewater. By optimizing the volume ratio of seawater draw solution/wastewater feed solution, a concentration factor of 3.1 and 3.7 was obtained for the FO and PRO modes, respectively. The results demonstrated the validity of the FO process for direct treatment of municipal wastewater by using seawater as the draw solution, while facilitating the subsequent utilization of concentrated wastewater for bioenergy production, which may have special implications for the coastline areas.
To examine the effects of increased $CO_2$ concentration and seawater temperature on the photosynthesis and growth of forest forming Ecklonia cava (Laminariales, Phaeophyta), sporophytic discs and gametophytes were cultured under three $pCO_2$ concentrations (380, 750, 1000 ppm), four temperatures (5, 10, 15, $20^{\circ}C$ for sporophytes; 10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$ for gametophytes), and two irradiance levels (40, $80{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$) for 5 days. Photosynthetic parameter values ($ETR_{max}$, $E_k$, and ${\alpha}$) were generally higher as sporophytic discs were grown under low temperature and increased $CO_2$ concentration at 750 ppm. However, photosynthesis of Ecklonia sporophytes was severely inhibited under a combination of high temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) and 1000 ppm $CO_2$ concentration at the two photon irradiance levels. The growth of gametophytes was maximal at the combination of 380 ppm (present seawater $CO_2$ concentration) and $25^{\circ}C$. Minimal growth of gametophytes occurred at enriched $pCO_2$ concentration levels (750, 1000 ppm) and high temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. The present results imply that climate change which is increasing seawater temperature and $pCO_2$ concentration might diminish Ecklonia cava kelp beds because of a reduction in recruitments caused by the growth inhibition of gametophytes at high $pCO_2$ concentration. In addition, the effects of increased temperature and $pCO_2$ concentration were different between generations - revealing an enhancement in the photosynthesis of sporophytes and a reduction in the growth of gametophytes.
