  • The Probabilistic Traveling Salesman Problem (PTSP) is an important topic in the study of traveling salesman problem and stochastic routing problem. The goal of PTSP is to find a priori tour visiting all customers with a minimum expected length, which simply skips customers not requiring a visit in the tour. There are many existing researches for the homogeneous version of the problem, where all customers have an identical visiting probability. Otherwise, the researches for the heterogeneous version of the problem are insufficient and most of them have focused on search base algorithms. In this paper, we propose a simple construction algorithm to solve the heterogeneous PTSP. The Minimum Expected Length Insertion (MELI) algorithm is a construction algorithm and consists of processes to decide a sequence of visiting customers by inserting the one, with the minimum expected length between two customers already in the sequence. Compared with optimal solutions, the MELI algorithm generates better solutions when the average probability is low and the customers have different visiting probabilities. We also suggest a local search method which improves the initial solution generated by the MELI algorithm.

  • An ad-hoc network routing protocol, AODV(Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector) initially uses ERS(Expanding Ring Search) algorithm to control the RREQ(Route Request) retransmission in the route discovery process. Because ERS uses the fixed NTT(Node Travesal Time), it does not reflect accurately ad-hoc network environment. In this paper, we propose an improved ERS algorithm which lowers the retransmission rate. It uses RREP(Route Reply) and gives different weights in NTT of each node in accordance with the adjacency to an originating node. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we perform a simulation using ns2. The simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm has better performance than existing algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal path search algorithm that applies the received signal strength between a mobile device and a satellite. Because the common path search algorithm is only based on the shortest path search, it is difficult to provide stable multimedia services for the satellite mobile devices. The proposed algorithm provides the stable communication environment for the satellite mobile devices based on received signal strength. In Satellite communications, changes in the radio quality are severe depending on the receiving environment. Therefore, an accurate analysis of the receiving environment characteristics is very important for providing stable multimedia services of satellite communications. The causes of radio attenuation are atmosphere attenuation, vegetation attenuation and buildings attenuation. These factors were applied to analyze the received signal strength. The proposed algorithm can search the optimal path in urban for stable satellite multimedia services.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm which is important in performance of video encoding. Even though so many fast algorithms for motion estimation have been published due to its tremendous computational amount of for full search algorithm, efforts for reducing computations in motion estimation still remain. In the paper, we propose an algorithm that reduces unnecessary computations only, while keeping prediction quality the same as that of the full search. The proposed algorithm does not calculate block matching error for each candidate at once to find motion vectors but divides the calculation procedure into several steps and calculates partial sum of block errors. By doing that, we can estimate the minimum error point early and get the enhancement of calculation speed by reducing unnecessary computations. The proposed algorithm uses smaller computations than conventional fast search algorithms with the same prediction quality as full search.

  • This paper proposes a Tabu search algorithm to minimize the required energy to send data between a source and a destination using the cooperative communication in wireless ad hoc networks. As the number of nodes in wireless ad hoc networks increases, the amount of calculation for establishing the path between nodes would be too much increased. To obtain the optimal cooperative path within a reasonable computation time, we propose a new Tabu search algorithm for a high-density wireless network. In order to make a search more efficient, we propose some efficient neighborhoods generating operations of the Tabu search algorithm. We evaluate those performances through some experiments in terms of the minimum energy required to send data between a source and a destination as well as the execution time of the proposed algorithm. The comparison results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other existing algorithms.

  • As a representative area-decomposed algorithm, an area-based quad-trie (AQT) has an issue of search performance. The search procedure must continue to follow the path to its end, due to the possibility of the higher priority-matching rule, even though a matching rule is encountered in a node. A leaf-pushing AQT improves the search performance of the AQT by making a single rule node exist in each search path. This paper proposes a new algorithm to further improve the search performance of the leaf-pushing AQT. The proposed algorithm implements a leaf-pushing AQT using a hash table and an on-chip Bloom filter. In the proposed algorithm, by sequentially querying the Bloom filter, the level of the rule node in the leaf-pushing AQT is identified first. After this procedure, the rule database, which is usually stored in an off-chip memory, is accessed. Simulation results show that packet classification can be performed through a single hash table access using a reasonable sized Bloom filter. The proposed algorithm is compared with existing algorithms in terms of the memory requirement and the search performance.

  • This paper presents an application of parallel Genetic Algorithm-Tabu Search (GA-TS) algorithm to search an optimal solution of a service restoration in distribution systems. The main objective of service restoration of distribution systems is, when a fault or overload occurs, to restore as much load as possible by transferring the do-energized load in the out of service area via network reconfiguration to the appropriate adjacent feeders at minimum operational cost without violating operating constraints, which is a combinatorial optimization problem. This problem has many constraints with many local minima to solve the optimal switch position. This paper develops parallel GA-TS algorithm for service restoration of distribution systems. In parallel GA-TS, GA operators are executed for each processor. To prevent solutions of low fitness from appearing in the next generation, strings below the average fitness are saved in the tabu list. If best fitness of the GA is not changed for several generations, TS operators are executed for the upper $10\%$ of the population to enhance the local searching capabilities. With migration operation, best string of each node is transferred to the neighboring node after predetermined iterations are executed. For parallel computing, we developed a PC cluster system consists of 8 PCs. Each PC employs the 2 GHz Pentium IV CPU and is connected with others through ethernet switch based fast ethernet. To show the validity of the proposed method, proposed algorithm has been tested with a practical distribution system in Korea. From the simulation results, we can find that the proposed algorithm is efficient for the distribution system service restoration in terms of the solution quality, speedup, efficiency and computation time.
