The Microfluidic Device using Viscosity Deviation of Magnetic Fluids Due to Temperature Changes (자성유체의 온도에 따른 점성 변화를 이용한 미소 유체 소자)

  • This study focused on the charateristic of magnetic fluids, the viscosity deviation of magnetic fluids due to temperature changes, and fabrication of a 'purely' liquid type microvalve. The viscosity of magnetic fluids decreases sharply during increasing of temperature. The viscosity of magnetic fluids is rated 1,000 cP at the room temperature and 25 cP when the temperature reaches $100^{\circ}C$. Briefly, it is remarkable that the fluid flow can be controlled by the temperature and this characteristic can be adopted to the microfluidics as a microvalve. The fabrication of a liquid type microvalve is more easy than solid state microvalves and which can increase an efficiency of the controlability with respect to the thermo-pneumatic micropump which is studied broadly for many years. When the magnetic fluid used as a sealant for high level sealing, the pressure leakage is less than solid state microvalve. The experimental results show that the pressure drop in microchannel, filled with the magnetic fluid, is significant in the temperature range of $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and this result explains why the use of magnetic fluids is possible as a microvalve searcher uses this characteristics.   • In this study, the failure mode and energy absorption capabilities of a composite shock absorber device, during an emergency landing are evaluated. The prototype has been installed and tested in laboratory simulating an emergency landing test condition. The crash absorber presents an innovative configuration able to reduce the loads transmitted to a helicopter fuselage during an emergency landing. It consists of a composite tailored tube installed on the landing gear strut. During an emergency landing this crash absorber system should be able to absorb energy through a pre-designed deformation. This solution, compared to an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber, avoids sealing checks, very high values of the shock absorber pressure, and results to be lighter, easy in maintenance, inspect and use. The activities reported in this paper have become an attractive research field both from the scientific viewpoint and the prospect of industrial applications, because they offer benefits in terms of energy absorbing, weight savings, increasing the safety levels, and finally reducing the costs in a global sense.

  • Selective catalytic reduction(SCR) is an exhaust gas reduction device to remove nitro oxides (NOx). SCR operation of ship can be controlled through valves for minimizing economic loss from SCR. Valve in SCR-high pressure (HP) system is directly connected to engine exhaust and operates in high temperature and high pressure. Long-term thermal deformation induced by engine heat weakens the sealing of the valve, which can lead to unexpected failures during ship sailing. In order to prevent the unexpected failures due to long-term valve thermal deformation, a failure prediction system using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) was proposed. Based on the heating experiment, virtual data mimicking temperature range around the SCR-HP valve were produced. By detecting abnormal temperature rise and fall based on the short-term ARIMA prediction, an algorithm determines whether present temperature data is required for failure prediction. The signal processed by the data collection algorithm was interpolated for the failure prediction. By comparing mean average error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE), ARIMA model and suitable prediction instant were determined.

A Study on Comparison of Outdoor Wind Pressure Performance According to Outdoor Exposure and Acceleration Deterioration Methods of Structural Sealants Applied to Curtain Wall (커튼월에 적용된 구조용 실링재의 옥외폭로와 실내복합열화 처리방법에 따른 내풍압성능 비교연구)

  • Sealants are an important element of modern architecture and serve as a building protection against weathering by providing barriers against ingress of moisture, air, and other materials. Exposure to a variety of environments often reduces lifespan due to changes in physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics, and UV, humidity, and temperature expansion are important issues that are directly related to durability. In this study, a combined deterioration test chamber was developed to simulate the environment of the open air as an instrument for verifying the durability of structural sealing materials indoors. In order to replicate special weather conditions, such as yellow dust, acid rain, and contamination by microorganisms, it was deemed impossible to replicate the outdoor environment by 100 %, and the results of the results of the results of the external exposure test of the structural sealant and the combined deterioration testing device. As a result of the displacement test of the outdoor exposure test, it was determined that the sealant was breaking apart and that it would be smooth, and the displacement would be up to three times greater than the initial material value of 1 year. The displacement test results of the combined deterioration test device show the tendency to deteriorate, decreasing the elasticity and tensile characteristics. In the case of denatured silicon, the current 400 cycles have been completed to confirm 12 months of degradation of the external exposure. The deformation of the test specimen cannot be verified with the naked eye, so it is considered that the conditions of the specimen are more stable than the silicon sealant. As a result of the outdoor exposure test, if the combined deterioration test device is structured and proposed in the relevant guidance or specification, the anticipated lifespan of 12 months in the actual use environment can be verified indoors and below 3 months later, economically.

Enhancement of PLED lifetime using thin film passivation with amorphous Mg-Zn-F

  • In this study, a new thin films passivation technique using Zn with high electronegativity and $MgF_2$, a fluorine material with better optical transmittance than the sealing film materials that have thus far been reported was proposed. Targets with various ratios of $MgF_2$ to Zn (5:5, 4:6 and 3:7) were fabricated to control the amount of Zn in the passivation films. The Mg-Zn-F films were deposited onto the substrates and Zn was located in the gap between the lattices of $MgF_2$ without chemical metathesis in the Mg-Zn-F films. The thickness and optical transmittance of the deposited passivation films were approximately 200 nm and 80%, respectively. It was confirmed via electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis that the Zn content of the film that was sputtered using a 4:6 ratio target was 9.84 wt%. The Zn contents of the films made from the 5:5 and 3:7 ratio targets were 2.07 and 5.01 wt%, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was determined to be $38^{\circ}C$, RH 90-100%. The WVTR of the Mg-Zn-F film that was deposited with a 4:6 ratio target nearly reached the limit of the equipment, $1\times10^{-3}\;gm^2{\cdot}day$. As the Zn portion increased, the packing density also increased, and it was found that the passivation films effectively prevented the permeation by either oxygen or water vapor. To measure the characteristics of gas barrier, the film was applied to the emitting device to evaluate their lifetime. The lifetime of the applied device with passivation was increased to 25 times that of the PLED device, which was non-passivated.

  • Background: Side clamping of ascending aorta during proximal graft anastomosis in coronary bypassing surgery in-creases the risk of direct aortic injury as well as embolization of intimal atheroma. Heartstring proximal sealing system (Guidant Corporation, Santa Clara, Calif), developed to avoid aortic side clamping, may minimize risks of such complications. The aim of the current study is to compare the surgical outcomes of the two proximal anastomosis techniquesi.e., Heartstring system versus aortic side clamping in off pump coronary bypassing' surgery (OPCAB). Material and Method: From January 2003 to August 2008, 499 patients underwent OPCAB. Of them, proximal graft anastomosis was performed using Heartstring system in 182 patients (Group I) and conventional manual anastomosis in 317 patients (Group II). The two groups were compared for postoperative major complications and mortality. Result: Two groups showed similar characteristics in terms of preoperative demographic data, left ventricular ejection fraction, renal function and history of diabetes, hypertension and smoking. Although there was no inter-group difference in the history of cerebral ischemia (p=0.48), preoperative brain magnetic resonance angiography revealed greater incidence of severe carotid artery stenosis (>75% of lumen) in the Group I than in the. Group II (44.5% in the Group I and 30.0% in the Group II, p=0.003). There were no inter-group differences in postoperative mortality (p=0.40) and complications (p=0.47) including neurologic events (3 in the Group land 2 in the Group II, p=0.258). Whereas neurologic events all comprised transient ischemic attacks in the Group I, they comprised multiple embolic strokes in the Group II. One patient in the Group II experienced aortic dissection during proximal anastomosis which resulted in ascending aortic replacement. Conclusion: Although proximal anastomosis using Heartstring system did not show statistically significant benefit over aortic side clamping, the. absence of embolic stroke maybe a definite benefit which may be better defined through further studies over a larger cohort.

  • An optical modulator Ti:LiNbO$_3$optical waveguide and CPW electrode structure were fabricated. The optical modulator was packaged using components such as ferrules, dirmy LN block and glass, vibration and shock absorbption pad, and alumina feeder through processings of pigtailing. Au wire bonding, epoxing, SMA connecting, sealing. The electrical and optical characteristics were measured after packaging. The electrical properties of S$_{21}$ and S$_{11}$ were obtained as 9.8 GHz at -3 dB and -8.9dB at 14.4GHz, respectively. Optical waveguide prepared met requirements for a single mode at a 1550nm wavelength range. Insertion loss was 4.3dB at room temperature after packaging, and was varied 4.3~6.4dB at various temperatures, 5~45$^{\circ}C$. E-O bandwidth measurement showed 3dB optical response at 7.8GHz, which means that it is applicable for 10Gbps optical communicationon

Comparison of Ligasure Versus Conventional Surgery for Curative Gastric Cancer Resection: a Meta-Analysis

  • Background: The LigaSure vessel sealing system has been proposed to save operation time and reduce intraoperative blood loss for various surgeries. However, its usage for gastric cancer is still controversial. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to compare the effectiveness of LigaSure with conventional surgery in gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: Sources were retrieved from the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Google Scholar until February, 2015. All randomized controlled trials comparing LigaSure with conventional surgery in curative gastric cancer resection were selected. After data extraction, statistics were performed by Review Manager 5.1 software. Results: Three eligible randomized controlled trials were evaluated, with a total of 335 patients. The quality of the included trials was good, yet some methodological and clinical heterogeneity existed. There were no significant differences between the LigaSure and conventional groups in operative time (weighted mean difference [WMD], -22.95 minutes; 95% confidence interval [CI], [-59.75, 13.85]; P = 0.22), blood loss (WMD, -45.8 ml; 95% CI, [-134.5, 42.90]; P = 0.31), nor the incidence of surgical complications (odds ratio, 1.18; 95% CI, [0.68, 2.05]; P = 0.54). But there was a longer duration of hospital stay in LigaSure group (WMD, 1.41 days; 95% CI, [0.14, 2.68]; P = 0.03). Conclusions: All available randomized evidence has been summarized. LigaSure does not confer significant advantage over conventional surgery for curative gastric cancer resection. The usefulness of the device may be limited in gastrectomy. But, more trials are needed for further assessment of the LigaSure system for gastric cancer.

Characteristics of Electrochemical and Cavitation Damage after Sealing Treatment for Arc Thermal Sprayed Coating Layer (후처리된 아크 용사코팅 층의 전기화학적 및 캐비테이션 손상 특성)

  • 해양환경 하에서 대형 강구조물의 경우 장기간 부식손상을 방지하기 위해 아크 용사코팅 기술이 오래전부터 유용하게 이용되어 왔다. 아크 용사코팅 기술은 타 용사코팅 기술에 비해 경제성과 생산성이 뛰어나 대형 강구조물에 적용되고 있다. 용사재료로는 Al, Zn 또는 그 합금들이 주로 사용되어 강재에 대해 희생양극 방식효과를 나타낸다. 그러나 아크용사에 의해 적층된 코팅 층은 용사공정 중 불가피하게 수많은 기공과 산화물이 포함되어 내식성 및 내구성에 악영향을 미치게 된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 알루미늄 합금의 용사코팅 층에 대하여 다양한 후처리를 통해 내식성과 더불어 내구성을 향상시키고자 하였다. 용사코팅은 알루미늄 합금 선재(1.6 ${\varnothing}$)를 사용하여 아크용사를 실시하였다. 용사 시 용사거리는 200 mm, 공기압력은 약 $7kg/cm^2$ 정도로 유지하면서 용사코팅을 실시하여 약 $200{\mu}m$ 두께로 코팅 층을 형성시켰다. 이후 용사코팅 층의 표면에 다양한 후처리재를 적용하였으며, 내구성을 평가하기 위하여 후처리 적용 전후 시험편에 대하여 캐비테이션 실험을 실시하였다. 캐비테이션 실험은 ASTM G32-92에 의거하여 주파수 20 kHz의 초음파 진동 장치(ultrasonic vibratory device)를 사용하였다. 그리고 시험편 표면과 발진 혼에 부착된 팁(tip)과의 거리는 1 mm로 일정하게 유지시킨 뒤, 캐비테이션 발생 시간을 변수로 하여 실험을 실시하였다. 손상된 용사코팅 층의 표면은 주사전자현미경과 광학현미경으로 관찰하였으며, 시험편 손상깊이는 3D 현미경으로 비교 분석하였다. 또한 캐비테이션 실험 전후의 무게를 측정하여 무게 감소량을 상호 비교하였다. 그리고 전기화학적 실험은 천연해수 속에서 자체 제작한 홀더(holder)를 이용하여 $0.33183cm^2$의 용사코팅 층만을 노출시켜 실시하였다. 그리고 기준전극은 은/염화은 전극을, 대극은 백금전극을 사용하였다. 분극실험을 통해 후처리 적용에 따른 용사코팅 층의 부식전위 및 부식전류밀도를 비교 평가하였다. 그 결과, 용사코팅 층에 의하여 강재에 대한 희생양극 방식전위가 확보되었으며, 후처리재가 적용된 용사코팅 층에서 내식성 및 캐비테이션 저항성이 향상되었다.

Optimized Design of Metal Seal Structure for a Pressure Vessel using Taguchi's Experimental Method (다구찌 실험법을 이용한 압력용기 메탈시일 구조물의 최적화 설계)

  • In this paper, the metal seal for a pressure vessel has been analyzed using the Daguchi method. This method may efficiently optimize the design parameters for a cantilever sealing device of a pressure vessel in terms of dimensions and angles. The computed results indicate that the optimized design parameters can only be drawn by sixteen experimental numbers of iterations when the Daguchi design technique has been employed. This means that the Daguchi design method is very useful for the optimization design of the curved design of the structure. Based on the computed results by the Daguchi design technique, the dimension and angle of the metal seal structure are given as $d_1=50mm,\;d_2=60mm,\;a_1=20^{\circ},\;a_2=8^{\circ},\;a_3=5^{\circ}$.
