  • Service life of concrete structures that are exposed to the environmental attack is largely influenced by the corrosion of reinforcing bare due to the chloride contamination. Chloride ions penetrate continuously into concrete from the environment, and chloride diffusion velocity is governed by a mechanical steady stage. In this study, a method is developed to predict corrosion initiation of reinforcing bars in the sea-shore structures, based on governing equations that take into account the diffusing of chloride ions and a mechanical steady state. As a result of this study, Corrosion Prediction System (CPS) is developed, and it can be used to determine an optimal time for repair and rehabilitation actions need to be taken. Futhermore, CPS assists the concrete mixing structures by predicting of chloride concentrations in concrete mixture, exposed to salt concentrations and service environment.

  • In general. service life of the sea-shore concrete structures is largely influenced by the corrosion of reinforcing steel due to the chloride contamination, and the penetration of chloride ions into concrete is governed by concrete condition state as a micro-structure. In this study, characteristics of chloride diffusion in concrete are analyzed in accordance with the mixing properties and durability of concrete, by considering the facts that micro-structure of concrete varies with the mixing properties and can indirectly be analyzed by using the durability test. In order to predict the service life of existing concrete structures, chloride diffusion equation for the concrete structures under various service conditions and the major parameters used in that equation are formulated as the mathematical models. Based on the results of chloride diffusion analysis in accordance with the mixing properties and durability of concrete and mathematical models formulated in this study, a prediction system is developed to predict the corrosion initiation of reinforcing steel in the sea-shore concrete structures.

  • Subtidal benthic macroalgal flora and community structure on barren grounds were examined seasonally along vertical shore gradients on the rocky shore of Hajung, Pohang, on the southeast coast of Korea, from February 2005 to November 2006. Twenty-six seaweed species were identified, including 5 green, 7 brown, and 14 red algae. The number of seaweed species ranged between 7 and 17 among seasons and between 13 and 20 species were found in vertical gradients along the shore. Over the study period, average seaweed biomass (g wet wt/$m^2$) was 299.88 g and it ranged seasonally from 120.99 to 620.00 g. Seaweed biomass declined with increasing seawater depth and ranged between 323.06 and 593.68 g. The dominant seaweed species, in terms of biomass, were Desmarestia ligulata and Sargassum honeri, which grew at depths between 5 and 10 m. The red alga Delisea pulchra was also abundant at a depth of 15 m. No seasonal patterns were found in community indices. Along vertical shore gradients, community indices showed different patterns; the dominance index increased and the richness, evenness, and diversity indices decreased with seawater depth.

  • The genetic diversity and population history of the Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, were investigated with a nucleotide sequence analysis of 536 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) in 111 samples collected from four populations in Korea and one in Japan. In total, 28 haplotypes were defined by 27 variable nucleotide sites in the COI region examined. The observed haplotypes had a shallow haplotype genealogy and no geographical associations. Most of the populations had high haplotype diversity (0.656-0.788) and low nucleotide diversity (0.00165-0.00244), and significant negative values for Fu's $F_S$, suggesting rapid and recent population growth from an ancestral population and sudden population expansion. The pairwise fixation indices ($F_{ST}$) estimated with the exact test and the migration rates indicate that substantial gene flow occurs among these populations as a result of sea currents, except between the Yellow Sea coast of Korea (BUA) and the Pacific Ocean coast of Japan (JPA). These two populations (BUA and JPA) showed significant genetic differentiation and low migration rate.

  • A numerical method is developed for the hydroelastic response of the Very Large Floating Structure considering the sea-bottom topography. The sea-bottom effects on the hydroelastic response of the floating structure is studied. The sea-bottom topography should be considered when the floating structure is constructed near the shore. To investigate the sea-bottom effects, four different sea-bottom topographies are considered in this study. finite-element method based on the variational formulation is used in the fluid domain, The pontoon-type floating structure is modeled as the Kirchhoff plate. The mode superposition method is adopted for the hydroelastic behavior of the floating structure.

  • It is most serious problem which is various occurs from the agricultural concrete structure and off shore concrete structure the problem which it comes to think is deterioration of the concrete which is caused with the corrosion of the reinforcing steel which is caused by with permeation of the water and the sea water. Specially the off shore concrete structure has been deteriorated by the steel reinforcement corrosion. The latex modified concrete(LMC) was adds latex in the plain concrete as the latex has increase the durability of concrete. This study were accomplished to the estimate the diffusion coefficient of LMC, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. The average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. Also, the average chloride diffusion coefficient was compared with diffusion coefficient test results of 28 curing days. The test results indicated that the average chloride diffusion coefficient could closely estimate the test results of the diffusion coefficient test results of 28 curing days.

  • This paper presents the research results of a light weight through topology optimization and structural safety evaluation through structural analysis of a pressure system structure installed in an off-shore plant. Conducting a structure design according to the wind load and the dynamic load at sea in addition to a self-load and structure stability evaluation are very important for structures installed in off-shore plants. In this study, the wind and dynamic load conditions according to the DNV classification rule was applied to the analysis. The topology optimization method was applied to the structure to obtain a lightweight shape. Phase optimization analysis confirmed the stress concentration portion. Topology optimization analysis takes the shape by removing unnecessary elements in the design that have been designed to form a rib shape. Based on the analysis results about the light weight optimal shape, a safety evaluation through structural analysis and suitability of the shape was conducted. This study suggests a design and safety evaluation of an off-shore plant structure that is difficult for structural safety evaluations using an actual test.

  • Structure of intertidal algal communities of the islands on the South Sea of Korea was studied in summer of 1987 and 1988. The area includes Manjedo, Ch'ujado, Kwantaldo, Munsom, Yosodo, Komumdo, Soridi, Yokchido, Pijindo and Hongdo. Three biologically distinct zones, were commonly recognized in the intertidal bulk of the all examined islands. In the high intertidal zone, only a few species showing thin, tubular and sheet like forms were observed, and the most abundant species was Gloiopeltis spp.. Corallina pilulifera, Hizikia fusiformis and Chondria crassicaulis were most abundant species of the mid intertidal zone, which was formed near the mean sea level. The structure of the low intertidal zone was much more complex than the high and mid, the most abundant species were Laurencia spp. and Sargassum sagamianum. All of the coarsely branched and articulated calcareous species were distributed below mean sea level.

  • The western coast of Anmyeondo is open toward the Yellow sea and the northern and southern coasts are sandy and have simple coastlines. In this study, we investigated the spatial distribution and community structure of the macrobenthos that inhabit the sandy shore of Anmyeondo. For the study, we chose 8 sites encompassing 44 stations. In total, we have recorded 62 species, and collected 747 inds./$m^2$ on average. Zonation pattern did not appear because the mean grain size and organic contents of the study sites were similar among the macrobenthos. Polychaetes were most frequently recorded, but amphipods appeared in higher mean density. Macrobenthic community is classified into 3 groups largely based on the density difference among the dominant species and the groups were not influenced by environmental factors. The aggregated distribution of macrobenthos did not show a clear regional spatial difference but exhibited classification pattern emphasizing the density difference of the dominant species. The sandy shores of Anmyeondo are relatively more influenced by waves compared to other regions and the sediment moves more due to strong winds, etc. at low tide. We presume that the movement of sediment resulted in a relatively even sedimentary environment and consequently weakened environmental variables that change with the tide level. We concluded that the macrobenthic community does not show the zonation pattern in the sandy shores of Anmyeondo due to such influences.
