  • Narrow (10-20 km wide) and steep (0.3-$2.4^{\circ}$) continental shelf off the eastern coast of Korea is covered with terrigenous clastic sediments reflecting the Holocene fluctuation of sea level. Surface sediments on the inner shelf consist of muddy sand and sandy mud with some gravels near the coast. However, sand or muddy sand, shell fragments and well rounded gravels occur near the edge of continental shelf at the depth of about 130-l50m. The coarse sediments near the shelf edge seem to be the relict or palimpsest sediments deposited under the nearshore environment during the low-stand or sea level due to so-called the Wisconsinan glaciation. Distribution of recent sediments near the coast and the inner shelf may reflect the affect of waves and currents precluding the deposition of fine sediment near the coast and on the shallow portion of shelf. Eastern Korean Warm Current also nay have played an important role to the transport and distribution of fine sediments from the south.

  • To know characteristics of water quality in coastal sea around the Keum river estuary in summer, we studied the water quality of surface, middle and bottom level during Jun e~september, 1998. The mean concentrations of COD, DIN, DIP & chlorophyll-a were 1.36mg/L, 28.60㎍-at/L, 0.48㎍-at/L and 4.14㎍/L, respectively, which were over eutrophication criteria in sea water. After the Keum river dyke was constructed, seasonal freshwater discharge was largely changed. About 80% of total annual freshwater discharge was concentrated in summer as rainy season from July to September. The correlation coefficient of DIN versus salinity was shown to be high, and thus the concentration of DIN was closely related to freshwater discharge. Maximum Chlorophyll-a concentration was occurred in September, due to increased DIP concentration, high water temperature and low salinity after heavy rainfall in August. The results of Principal Component Analysis showed that the first factor represented a series of eutrophication factors, the second factor w3s a valiance of seasonal fluctuation, and the third was a variance of progress of mass change.

  • Heat exchange between the atmosphere and sea is produced using the data from two 3m discus buoy installed by KMA in 1996. The meteorological and oceanic characteristics at the Dukjukdo and Chilbaldo buoy for the period 1996 ${\sim}$ 2000 are discussed. Daily averaged sensible heat and latent heat flux at each site are estimated from bulk aerodynamic method using given data and analyzed. Quantitative analyses show SST indicates 1-year cycle like air temperature but has 1 month lag. Sea level pressure is lowest in July, humidity is higher from May to August, and wind speed has averaged value of 5 m/s and higher in autumn and winter. Sensible heat flux analyses present that strong heat loss from the sea occurs in autumn and winter and weak heat loss from atmosphere appears in spring and summer, and net sensible heat loss from the sea is found throughout the year. The ocean significantly releases latent heat into atmosphere from August to May but get a little latent heat from atmosphere in other months. Net latent heat loss from the sea is larger than net sensible heat loss except in January and February. Comparison with two sites suggests that the magnitude of heat flux and their fluctuation are generally stronger at Dukjukdo than at Chilbaldo. In case study, both sensible and latent heat flux is a little more at Chilbaldo in March 1998, but substantially stronger at Dukjukdo in November 1996.

  • Numerical simulations were done using depth integrated ADCIRC model in order to evaluate dynamic response on the inner Saemankeum reservoir due to flood flow and gate operation for the both situations of dike construction and inner development. According to 2-dimensional dynamic flood routing, temporal variation of hydrographs shows sensitive at upstream riverine region while it becomes stable from the center part of the reservoir due to sudden expansion of physical changes. Dynamic response of hydraulic changes such as water surface elevation and velocity on the inner region arises suddenly by gate operation and more rapidly after the inner development than dike construction. Temporal surface fluctuation arises during inflowging of outer sea water and propagates upstream up to 10km to 16km in accordance with inner development status.

  • Detection and localization of a quiet target in shallow water environments is a challenging problem because of the complicated acoustic Propagation and the Prevalence of loud surface ship interference. Matched Field Processing (MFP) can help address the concern by using a Propagation model to determine the steering vectors, thus Providing optimal away gain and localization accuracy. However, Performance of MFP have yet realized in practice, for several reasons. The most important limitation is that precise information on the underwater environments is generally not available. To examine the Performance of MFP in the East Sea of Korea, we have accomplished a series of matched acoustic Properties and localization experiment (MAPLE). We analyzed the array data measured from MAPLE which is accomplished using a vertical line array and a towed acoustic source off the east cost of Korea in Oct. 2003. We localized the acoustic source using MFP. It is well known that the temperature structure in the experimental site is affected by the short period fluctuation such as internal wave. In this paper, it is found that the sidelobe level on the MFP ambiguity surface is increased being affected by the short period fluctuation.

  • This study was carried out to determine marine environments and phytoplankton community around Mokpo harbour on March to November during the period of 2004-2009. The remarkable fluctuations of marine environments were shown around Mokpo harbour depending on monthly and yearly. Among seasons, summer was a great that was associated with extremely releasing the freshwater from Youngsan River Weir, contributing to effect the fluctuations of water quality. Nevertheless of monthly and yearly, the molecular ratio of N:P was always shown in above 16 that was mainly attributed to freshwater discharge on March to November. This indicates that phosphorus playes an important role in limiting factor as growth in phytoplankton. During this study, Skeletonema costatum was found to be richer than the other groups of diatoms in terms of abundance and species number. Mokpo harbour, with the presence of a narrow avenue for exchange with offshore waters, has limited growth in phytoplankton, but this species is able to well adapt and fast grow under even high level of suspended solid and low intensity of light compared with other species. The discharge of freshwater is associated with significantly fluctuation of marine environments in this region, but it does not affect the quantitative and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton. It is necessary to persistently monitor based on water quality and phytoplankton community.

  • Interannual and decadal scale body size of Pacific saury, catch and catch per unit effort were examined to investigate the environmental effects on the stock structure and abundance in the Tsushima Warm Current region. Interannual changes in thermal conditions are responsible for the different occurrence (catch) rates of sized group of the fish. Changes in body size due to environmental variables lead the stock to be homogeneous during the period of high abundance, while one of the reminder cohorts supports the stock during the period of low level of abundance. Migration circuits of two cohorts of saury stock are hypothesized on the basis of short life span and spatio-temporal changes in stock structure in normal environmental conditions. Changes in upper ocean structure and production cycles by the decadal scale climate changes lead changes in stock structure and recruitment, resulting in the fluctuation of saury abundance. Hypothesized mechanism of the effects of climate changes on the stock structure and abundance is illustrated on the basis of changes in thermal regime and production cycle.

  • The late Quaternary stratigraphy and basal unconformity (nonconformity) of the intertidal deposits (upper tidal flat) in the Banweol tidal basin in the Kyunggi Bay, west coast of Korea has been investigated and established. The Unit I (middle to late Holocene upper intertidal deposit) and Unit II (pre-Holocene fluvial to alluvial deposit) in descending order are classified and interpreted. The basement rocks of the Banweol tidal basin is dominantly preCambrian metamorphic rocks on which Unit II is overlying unconformably. In short, the late Quaternary stratigraphy and unconformity of the Banweol tidal flat deposits are established and interpreted in terms of sedimentology and sea-level fluctuation history during late Quaternary.

  • The relationship between the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and surface air temperature (SAT) over Korea is re-examined using the long-term observation and reanalysis datasets for the period of December 1958 to February 2020. Over the entire period, Korean SAT is positively correlated with the AO index with a statistically significant correlation coefficient, greater than 0.4, only in the boreal winter. It is found that this correlation is not static but changes on the decadal time scale. While the 15-year moving correlations are as high as 0.6 in 1980s and 1990s, they are smaller than 0.3 in the other decades. It is revealed that this decadal variation is partly due to the AO structure change over the North Pacific. In the period of 1980s-1990s, the AO-related sea level pressure fluctuation is strong and well defined over the western North Pacific and the related temperature advection effectively changes the winter SAT over Korea. In the other periods, the AO-related circulation anomaly is either weak or mostly confined within the central North Pacific. This result suggests that Korean SAT-AO index relationship, which becomes insignificant in recent decades is highly dependent on mean flow change in the North Pacific.

  • Preloading surcharge method along with vertical drains was adopted to improve the performance of a very soft marine clay deposit. The onshore deposit, located in the Ulsan Bay area, consists of a 2 to 10m thick, very soft, highly compressible marine clay layer developed just below. the sea water level. The initial undrained shear strength of the clay layer was about 0.6 ton/m2. But, the deposit was designed after treatment to support some auxiliary facilities for a new ilo refinery plant, requiring bearing capacities of 3.6 to 5.4 ton/m2 and maximum allowablee settlement of less than 7.5cm. A total of 35, 000 wick drains Ivas installed to expedite drainage during preloading, and surcharge loads of up to 5m above the original ground level were applied in a step-by-step loading sequence to prevent ground failure by excess surcharge loads. An extensive program of field instrumentation was implemented to monitor the behavior of the clay deposit. Measurers!ends included settlements, excess pore pressure and its dissipation, ground farmer level fluctuation, and lateral movement of the so(t clay layer under the preloads. This paper describes the design concepts, construction methods and control procedures used for improvement of the clay layer. It also presents the ground behavior measured during construction, rind comparisons with theoretical predictions.
