  • Numerical analyses were carried out for studying on seepage problems due to seawater intrusion through the embedded rock layers of the sea-dike. A seepage analysis model, SAMTLE was developed fur two-layer embankment system. The analyses by SAMTLE showed that the size of embedded rock layer had a significant effect on the seepage problems of sea-dike. If the embedded rock layer is longer and thicker, the seepage problems become more serious to water head, seepage rate and safety factor of piping in embankment. On the other hand, if the width of embedded rock layer is equivalent to the sea-dike's bottom width, the water head becomes lower and seepage rate and safety factor of piping are dramatically increasing. This makes another seepage problems such that the fresh water becomes saltier and higher seepage rates result in internal erosion of sea-dike.

  • In this study, piping and slope stabilities of sea dike were analyzed through pore pressure-mechanic coupled analysis. Through decrement of sea dike inclination, to confirmed cross-section reduction possibility of multi-function sea dike.

  • The sea dike at Gun-Jang Industry Area had been constructed recently and both inside and outside areas of the dike show harmonic behaviour. To examine stability against piping, 2 dimensional seepage analysis was executed using finite element method. To investigate the harmonic motion of water level, unsteady and unsaturated flow analysis is needed, and specially harmonic motion in the both areas from the dike should be considered, Water level recorder was used to obtain tidal harmonic data, and sieve analysis has been earried out so that the distribution of grain diameter of the dike material is clearly informed. The calculated velocity was compared with critical velocity.

  • In this study, the seepage flow monitoring method by hydaulic head loss rate graph was developed for the purpose of monitoring the seepage flow from the see side or from the lake on sea dike in which seepage force was varied periodically. The hydraulic head loss rate was defined in this method. The value of the rate is in the range from 0 to 1. the value of 0 means perfectly free flow of seepage. the value of 1 means perfect waterproofing. The value of coefficient of determination in the hydraulic head loss rate graph closer to 1 means that the seepage flow way is stable. The value of coefficient of determination in the hydraulic head loss rate graph closer to 0 means that the hole may exist or the piping may be in the progress. The pore water pressure data measured in Saemangeum sea dike was analyzed with the developed method The result showed that the variation of seepage flow state was detected sensitively by this method and the interception effect of sea dike could be estimated quantitatively.

  • This paper aims at developing the prediction technique of the deformation for the embankment such as sea dike and shore protection relevant to reclamation project along the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. Generally total deformation of a sea dike over clayey foundation are composed of immediate settlement, plastic deformation and consolidation settlement. Plastic deformation occurs when the ultimate bearing capacity is less than overburden pressure containing the stress increment due to the construction of an embankment. The reliable prediction of total settlement is very important since deformed final geometry of sea dike is directly connected for analysing the safety of the long-term slope failure and piping. During this study, plastic deformation, major part of deformation was analysed using the program developed by authors, whereas immediate settlement and consolidation settlement were predicted by Mochinaka and Sena's method and Terzaghi's 1-dimensional theory of consolidation respectively. In order to validate the prediction technique for the deformation, a case study of Koheung Bay reclamation works was carried out. A good agreement was obtained between observation and prediction, which means the applicability of the technique.
