Tidal land reclamation provided water resources and land for agriculture and contributed stable crop production. However, climate change by global warming disrupts the hydrologic circulatory system of the earth resulting in sea level rise and more frequent flood for reclaimed arable land. Recently, Suyu reclaimed paddy field in Jindo-gun experienced prolonged inundation after heavy rainfall and there is a growing risk of flood damage. Onsite survey and flood analysis using GATE_Pro model of Korea Rural Corporation were conducted to investigate causes of flooding. To perform the analysis, input data such as inflow hydrograph, the lowest elevation of paddy field, neap tide level, management level of Gunnae estuary lake at the time of the flood were collected. Flood analysis confirmed that current drainage facilities are not enough to prevent 20year return period flood. The result of analysis showed flooding more than 24hours. Therefore, flood mitigation alternatives such as sluice gate expansion, installation drainage pumping station, refill paddy land, and catch canal were studied. Replacing drainage culvert of Suyu dike to sluice gate and installing drainage pumping station at the Gunne lake were identified as an effective flood control measures. Furthermore, TM/TC (SCADA) system and expert for gate management are required for the better management of drainage for estuary dam and flood mitigation.

Most projects of tideland reclamation with dike construction produce estuarine reservoirs, which may result in water quality problems due to blocking of natural flow of stream water to the sea. External loadings to the reservoirs through tributaries are major concerns in a concerned water quality management. The water quality of a reservoir is greatly influenced by watershed drainage, and accurate estimation of pollutant is indispensable for in the reservoir management. Concentrations of the microorganisms in stream water and conventional parameters were monitored in the 13 water quality monitoring sites located in a rural watershed of Hwaong estuarine reservoir. The indicator of microorganisms showed strong correlation between them, and regression equations with $R^2\geq0.70$ may be used fur estimating one from other microorganisms. The relationships between water quality parameters obtained in this study may be used to infer one unknown pollutant concentrations from the measured pollutant loadings. This methodology could be applied to other areas where the watershed characteristics are not significantly different from the study area. High concentrations of nitrogen was observed in water quality monitoring sites affected by urban land uses and numbers of livestock in wet day as well as dry day, due to the influent of diffuse sources.

A two-dimensional numerical analysis is performed for the simulation of intertidal-flat and analysis of hydraulic characteristics during seadike construction in Sae-Man-Keum tidal basin. The shallow water equations are selected as a mathematical model and the Leendertse's ADI scheme is used as the corresponding numerical model. The simulated results of tide and current by the present model agree welt with the experimenta1 results by the hydraulic Lab. or ADC (1989). In the application of the model, the possibility of rapidly varied flow analysis and the introduction of turbulence model required for more accurate hydraulic calculation at closing gap are described. The successive simulation of flooding/drying effects by a modification of the method by Stelling et al. (1986) can easily be used for the intertidal-flat analysis during tidal reclamation.
Lately Gun-Jang Harbor has undergone a drastic change in hydraulic characteristics due to newly added harbor protection measures, like a wharf and breakwater. The wharf and breakwater, with a training dike, were constructed to keep enough depth far navigation. They make the plan view of Gun-Jang Harbor semi closed and very elongated, which makes it very vulnerable to seiche. Hence it is an urgent task to unveil the hydraulic characteristics, like seiche, for the optimal operation of the new harbor system. In this study, we numerically analyze the seiche characteristics of Gun-Jang Harbor over the $10-4{\sim}10-3$ Hz frequency range, considering that wind waves due to seasonal winds are the most prevailing during winter in the West sea. As a wave driver, we use Mild Slope Eqs. and numerically integrate these using FEM based on Galerkin weak formulation. It turns out that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th eigen models are over 0.0009 Hz, 0.0013 Hz, 0.0017 Hz and 0.002 Hz.

In order to investigate spatial and temporal distributional characteristics of major water qualities in the Saemangeum area during the Saemangeum dike construction, salinity, COD, dissolved nutrients(DIN, Silicate) and heavy metals were analyzed from the surface water collected in April, May, August and November 2002. The overall value of Salinity, COD, DIN, and silicate in surface waters were in the range of $13.08{\sim}31.96\;psu$, $0.12{\sim}3.43\;mg/L$, $0.001{\sim}2.638\;mg/L$, and $0.010{\sim}3.181\;mg/L$, respectively. The COD and DIN in each survey showed the highest concentration at the mouth of Mangyeong river estuary(St. 1) where freshwater flow into the Saemangeum area. The concentrations of nutrients were high in the inner part of the Saemangeum dike with low-salinity, and low nutrients in the outer part of the dike with high-salinity, which strongly indicated that concentrations were adjusted by physical mixing. The ranges of dissolved metals and acid-soluble Hg in surface seawater were $0.006{\sim}0.115{\mu}g/L$ for Co, $0.26{\sim}0.114{\mu}g/L$ for Ni, $0.14{\sim}0.93{\mu}g/L$ for Cu, $0.04{\sim}0.53{\mu}g/L$ for Zn, $0.010{\sim}0.043{\mu}g/L$ for Cd, $0.010{\sim}0.795{\mu}g/L$ for Pb, and $0.25{\sim}4.16{\mu}g/L$ for Hg. The highest concentrations of some metals except for Cd were found at the estuary(Sts. 1 or 3). In most cases, a decreasing order of metal concentrations towards open sea(low-salinity$\rightarrow$high-salinity) was observed and showed positive relationship with DIN and silicate caused by land base pollutants input. On the other hand, due to Cd desorption from suspended solids in saline water, dissolved Cd concentrations were high in high-salinity area and low in low-salinity. In November, Co, Zn, Cu and Pb were relatively high in the northern area of the outer-side of Saemangeum, which was only influenced by the Geum river discharge. The concentrations of most dissolved metals of this study were lower than those of the past data in this area, but higher than those in Lena river estuary under the pristine environment.
Salt marsh is an important transitional zone among terrestrial, riverine, and marine ecosystems and is a productive habitat that interacts extensively with adjacent landscape elements of estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Nowadays, in addition to various human activities, a variety of natural processes induce changes in salt marshes. This study aims to provide background information to restore disturbed salt marshes and to propose their ecological restoration using seed banks. The study area is a prepared area for the Gwangyang Container Port located in the southern Korea. This area was formed by accumulating mud soils dredged from the bottom of the forward sea. This land was created in a serial process of preparing the Gwangyang container port and the salt marsh was passively restored by seeds buried in mud soil dredged from seabed. As a result of stand ordination based on vegetation data collected from the land, stands were arranged according to tolerance to salinity in the order of $Suaeda$$maritima$, $Salicornia$$europaea$, and $Phragmites$$communis$ communities on the Axis 1. Landscape structure of the projected area was analyzed as well. Edges of the projected area were divided from the marginal waterway by the dike. Four types of vegetation appeared on the dike: $Alnus$$firma$ plantation, $Robinia$$pseudoacacia$ plantation, $Lespedeza$$cyrtobotrya$ plantation, and grassland. In the more internal areas, two types of vegetation sequences appeared: $Aster$$tripolium$ community-$Suaeda$$glauca$ community-$Salicornia$$europaea$ community sequence and $Aster$$tripolium$ community-$Suaeda$$maritima$ community-$S.$$europaea$ community sequence. Mixed community showed the highest species diversity (H' = 0.86) and $S.$$europaea$ community showed the lowest (H' = 0.0). Evenness is the highest in Mixed community (J' = 2.26) and the lowest in $S.$$maritime-S.$$europaea$ community (J' = 0.0). Several plant communities were successfully established on the land created by mud soil dredged from the bottom of Gwangyang Bay. Moreover, community diversity in this area approached a similar level with those from other studies involving natural salt marshes. Therefore, restoration effect based on community diversity obtained in our study can be evaluated as a successful achievement. In this respect, although most salt marshes in Korea and other places worldwide have been destroyed or disturbed by excessive land use, feasibility of seed bank as a restoration tool is greatly expected.
In the estuary where the structure such as river-mouth weir has been installed, the flow is developed very complicatedly due to river water from upstream, tide of the sea and floodgate operation. Especially, if basin outlets more than one exists in one estuary, the boundary conditions will be significantly more complex form. Saemangeum(SMG) project area in Korea is the most typical example. There are Mankyung river and Dongjin river in upstream. The water of them inflows into SMG project area. In the downstream, river flow was drained from inland to sea over the SMG sea dike through the sluice. The connecting channel was located between Mankyung and Dongjin basins. It functions not only as transportation by ship in ordinary period but also as flood sharing by sending flood flow to each other in flood period. Therefore, in order to secure the safety against flood, it is very important to understand the flood sharing capacity for connecting channel. In this study, the flood control effect was analyzed using numerical simulation. Delft3D was used to numerical simulation and simulated period was set up with neap tide, in which the maximum flood stage occurred due to poor drainage. Actually, three connecting channels were designed in land use plan of the SMG Master Plan, but they were simplified to a single channel for conciseness of analysis in this study. According to the results of numerical analysis, the water level difference between two basins was increased and the maximum flood stage at dike sluice was also upraised depending on decrease of conveyance. And the velocity induced by same water level difference was decreased when the conveyance became smaller. In certain conveyance above, there was almost no flood control effect. Therefore, if the results of this study are considered for design of connecting channel, it will be expected to draw the optimal conveyance for minimizing dredging construction cost while maximizing the flood control effect.

The purpose of this study was to understand the pollution level of the surface sediment of Sihwa Lake by assessing its geochemical characteristics and investigating the spatial distribution of trace metals and organic matter. In the surface sediment of Sihwa lake, the mean grain size was between 2.94 and 6.35 Ø and the main type of sediment was sandy silt. The concentrations of As, Co, Cr, Ni, V and Li among the metal elements in the surface sediment were correlated with the mean crust concentration (p<0.05). Based on the strong correlation between the metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) and organic matter (Ignition Loss), the concentrations of these metal elements seem to be controlled by the organic matter dilution effect. The trace metal pollution level, determined by applying the Republic of Korea Marine environmental standard and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's sediment quality guidelines, showed the pollution level of As to be either close to or in excess of the above-mentioned standards at almost all levels. The enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index of As showed that there was an incremental increase of pollution by elements other than V, Cr, Co, Fe, Al and Mn. Moreover, the nearby industrial area and dike were more polluted than the other areas, so the surface sediments in Sihwa lake should be monitored by taking into consideration the geological variations.
This study examined the relationship between the sediment pollution and the occurrence of polychaetes in a heavily polluted saltwater lake, Lake Shihwa on the west coast of Korea, separated from the sea by a dike in 1994. The species composition of polychaete assemblage was compared with that found off the lake in Kyeonggi Bay. Environmental variables investigated both in and off the lake were the grain size distribution, chemical oxygen demand(COD) and metal concentrations (Al, Fe, Mn, V, Co, As, Pb, Cr and Cu) in the sediment. We sampled sediments at 10 stations in the lake and 25 stations in Kyeonggi Bay using a modified van Veen grab. The levels of COD, chromium, and copper in sediments were much higher in Lake Shihwa than in Kyeonggi Bay. Differences in the species composition were found along the pollution gradient. An azoic zone was observed in the most heavily polluted area at the upper reach of the lake and the Polydora ligni zone in the center of the lake. Bottom fauna were diverse in Kyeonggi Bay; however, Heteromastus filiformis predominated in the organically enriched sediment. The density of dominant species differed along the pollution gradient. The highest density or H. filiformis was round at the COD level or around 5.8 mg/g. The COD level in the sediment where P. ligni predominated was tow-fold higher than that where H. filiformis occurred in large numbers. The chromium and copper contents at which P. ligni showed a maximum abundance were 120 mg/kg and 127 mg/kg, respectively. The density of H. filiformis was highest at concentrations of 56 mg/kg chromium and 13 mg/kg copper.

Recently, Land reclamation created agricultural land which is farming. Agricultural land which is farming have accident with frequency it is damage to crop of from brine. So, desalinization is the first priority prerequisite task in using the in reclaimed farm land. Vibrant research and technical development is working for reclaimed of desaliaization. But, Current technology is impossible desalinization of reclaimed land. As fast almost of people don't worry about concentration of salt in using the land reclamation of agricultural land irrigation water and river mouth of fountainhead of efforting from freshwater lake also ebb and flow of the tide land reclamation of agricultural land influnce from an increase of salt concentration by weather conditions and a malfunction of sea dike sluice In this paper, current is increased salt concentration in real time graphs were implemented to utilize external servers in using the WCDMA module. Inaddition it have to operate alarm in increase of salt concentration. besides, this program have implemented realtime concentration of salt monitoring system which save date in realtime the user can check again.
