The purpose of this study is to verify the biomechanical characteristics of the custom-made(our) pedicle screws which are designed the different types of shape, pitch, and profile. The results of experiments for our pedicle screw were summarized. 1) The screw of larger outer diameter showed greater holding strength. 2) The holding strength of cylindrical shaped screw was superior to that of conical shaped screw. 3) The holding strength of buttress shape of thread profile showed superior to that of V-shape. 4) The pull out and holding strength of our pedicle screws was superior to that of commercialized screw (Diapason and CD) which is widely used.
Flakeboards made from ring- and drum-cut flakes of Douglas-fir, hemlock, red lauan and kapur using two kinds of resin levels were evaluated for the selected properties according to flake thickness. The pH and buffering capacity of four species were determined. Those of kapur were extremely different from the other three species. These pH and buffering capacity values result in the poor internal bond strength of kapur flakeboard. The internal bond strength was affected significantly by flake thickness, resin content and species. MOR and MOE in bending strength were maximized at medium drum-cut flake thickness. Screw holding strength was not consistent for flake thickness, but it was influenced by species. Thickness swelling and water absorption of Douglas-fir and hemlock flakeboard were minimized at medium drum-cut flake thickness.
Tests were carried out on commercial particleboards manufactured in Korea to evaluate and modify formulas which had previously been developed to predict the holding loads of screw on the face and edge of specimen. Screw sizes were No. 6, 8 and 10 used in this study. The withdrawal loads of screws were developed to predict as a function of screw diameter, depth of penetration, specific gravity and IB of particleboard. Predicted equations were fitted to the test results of different length of No. 8 screws. Results of tests indicate that IB is a better predictor of holding loads on the face of particleboard than SG. On the other hand, SG is a good indicator of holding load on the edge of particleboard.
Screw withdrawal test was carried out on the face and edge of domestic particleboard and medium density fiberboard in order to evaluate optimum pilot hole diameter. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Maximum withdrawal strengths on the face and edge of particleboard were obtained with pilot hole diameters at about 50% of root diameters of screw. 2. Maximum withdrawal strength on the face and edge of medium density fiberboard were obtained with pilot hole diameters that were about 60% and 50% of root diameters of screw, respectively. 3. Withdrawal strength showed about 91% of maximum withdrawal strength when pilot holes were not pre bored at particleboard. but when pilot holes at 90% of root diameter of screw withdrawal strength showed about as 51.3% of maximum withdrawal strength. 4. Withdrawal strength showed about 88% of maximum strength when pilot holes were not used, but withdrawal strength indicated 55.4% of maximum strength in case of 90% of root diameters of screw. 5. Maximum withdrawal strength on the face of particleboard was about 70.5% higher than that of the edge, and however medium density fiberboard was about 19.6% higher than that of the edge.
The object of this study was to investigate the effects on physical and mechanical properties of wood particle and sawdust board combined with wire net. Conventional forming, press-lam, and veneer comply boards combining one to four wire net sheets were made from wood particle and sawdust with different spacings (8, 10, 12, and 18 Mok) and different wire diameters (0.35, 0.50, and 0.80mm) composing wire net. They were compared and analyzed statistically with specific gravity, thickness swelling, length swelling, bending properties (modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, work to proportional limit, and total work), internal bonding strength, and screw holding strength between wood particle and sawdust boards. The results obtained at this study as cording to the discussions might be concluded as follows; 1. In specific gravity, both particle and sawdust boards by press-lam method were higher than by conventional forming and veneer comply method, and the boards containing more wire net sheets also showed higher value. But the wire net spacings(Mok) had no influence on specific gravity. In general, particle board showed higher specific gravity than sawdust board. Veneer comply board showed lowest specific gravity values. 2. Both particle and sawdust boards by press-lam method was slightly lower than by conventional forming and veneer comply method in thickness swelling. The sawdust board containing 8, 12. and 18 Mok wire net showed lower thickness swelling than the corresponding particle board, but both sawdust and particle boards containing the T8 and 10 Mok wire net showed higher and similar thickness swelling. 3. Both particle and sawdust boards containing wire net showed no difference in MOR and MOE of bending. Comply board was the highest and particle board showed slightly higher than sawdust board in MOR and MOE values. 4. In work to proportional limit and total work in bending, both particle and sawdust boards containing thicker wire diameter and more wire net sheets showed higher value. From these facts, it is conceivable that boards with thicker wire diameter and more wire net sheets show increasing resistance against external force. But there was no significant difference between particle and sawdust borads. 5. In resistance against delamination (internal bonding strength), both sawdust and particle boards containing wire net showed lower value than control, and also showed decreasing tendency with more number of wire net sheet composed. Particle board showed higher resistance against delamination than sawdust board. 6. In screw holding strength, sawdust board containing thicker wire diameter and more wire net sheets showed higher value, but particle board by press-lam method was higher than by conventional forming and veneer comply method. Screw holding strength of particle board was higher than that of sawdust board.
This study was carried out to determine the withdrawal strength of various screws according to root diameter of screw and embeded length on the face and edge of domestic particleboard and medium density fiberboard. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The withdrawal strength of screw in domestic particleboard and medium density fiberboard was closely related to embeded length of the screw but less dependent on root diameter of the screw. 2. The withdrawal strength on the face and edge of domestic particleboard could be predicted by means of the following expression: $F_{Pf}=4.60{\times}D^{0.24}{\times}L^{1.14}(R^2=0.87)$$F_{Pe}=0.54{\times}D^{0.43}{\times}L^{1.73}(R^2=0.84)$ Where: $F_{Pf}$ : withdrawal strength on the face of particleboard(kgf) $F_{Pe}$=withdrawal strength on the edge of particleboard(kgf) D=diameter of the screw(mm) L=embeded length(mm) 3. The withdrawal strength on the face and edge of domestic medium density fiberboard could he predicted by means of the following expression: $FM_f=1.53{\times}D^{0.53}{\times}L^{1.39}(R^2=0.93)$$F_{Me}=1.14{\times}D^{0.66}{\times}L^{1.36}(R^2=0.87)$ where: $F_{Mf}$ = withdrawal strength on the face of medium density fiberboard(kgf) $F_{Mf}$=withdrawal strength on the edge of medium density fiberboard(kgf).
As a way for the effective utilization of pallman chips and sawdusts, these furnish materials were combined with non-woody material of plastic (polypropylene) screen in board manufacturing to improve their weak physical and mechanical properties. The conventional boards were made with conditions of specific gravity 0.40, 0.55, 0.70, and 0.85, resin content 8, 10, 12 and 14%, and number of polypropylene screen 1, 2, 3 and 4, and press-lam boards were also manufactured. The physical and mechanical properties were measured and discussed on thickness swelling, bending modulus of rupture and elasticity, tensile strength, internal bond strength, and screw holding strength. The results obtained at this study were summarized as follows: 1. In thinckness swelling both of pallman chip board and sawdust board were improved by the increase of resin content, and press-lam boards showed lower thickness swelling than conventional boards. 2. Both the modulus of rupture and elasticity were increased with the increase of specific gravity, and press-lam boards showed higher modulus of rupture and elasticity than conventional boards. On the other hand, modulus of rupture was increased with the increase of number of polypropylene screen and resin content whereas these effects in modulus of elasticity was not recognized. 3. Tensile strength was increased with the increase of specific gravity, and the boards combined with polypropylene screen showed higher tensile strength than control boards. Also tensile strength was increased with the increase of number of polypropylene screen, and press-lam boards revealed higher tensile strength than conventional boards. 4. Internal bond strength was increased with the increase of specific gravity, and the boards combined with polypropylene screen were lower in internal bond strength than control boards. Also, the boards combined with odd number of polypropylene screen showed lower internal bond strength than those combined with even number of polypropylene screen. 5. Screw holding strength was increased with the increase of resin content and specific gravity but significant difference was not approved between boards combined with polypropylene screen and control boards. In press-lam boards, pallman chip boards of higher specific gravity but sawdust boards of lower specific gravity showed better screw holding strength than control boards.
This study was performed to determine the characteristics of physical and mechanical properties of domestic wood based materials; plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard. Main items of tested properties were panel size, moisture content, water absorption, linear expansion and thickness swelling, glue bond shear strength, bending properties(stress at proportional limit, modulus of rupture. modulus of elasticity), tensile strength, screw holding strength, and internal bond as neccessary. the results were discussed mainly with Korean Standards. The obtained conclusions are as follows; 1. Length and width of 3mm thin plywood(3-ply) and 12mm thick plywood(7-ply) were satished with KS-standard, but thicknesses of these panels were not- passed tolerance limit except one of eight makers. 2. Length and width of particleboard and medium density fiberboard were greater than the tolerance limit value of KS standard, but the thicknesses of these panels were passed this value. 3. Moisture contents of 12mm thick and 3mm thin plywood were satisfied with KS-standard except one mill made 3mm thin plywood. 4. Moisture absortion of plywood was not passed tolerance limit of KS-standard but particleboard was satisfied with this standard value. 5. Dry and wet shear strengths in glue bond of 3mm thin plywood were not reached to KS-standard, but those of 12mm thick plywood were sufficiently satisfied with KS standrad. 6. Modulus of ruptures, parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain of plywood, and particleboard and medium density fiberboard were satisfied with KS-standard. 7. Tensile strengths, parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain of plywood were satisfied with allowance stress of US product standard PS 1-74. 8. Screw holding strength of particleboard was not reached to KS standard, but internal bond was satisfied with KS standard.
This study serves as basic research for the development of a new wood-based building finishing material that improved the weakness of inorganic materials such as gypsum board and magnesium board widely used as interior finishing materials and brought out the strength of the wood. The results of evaluating the physical and mechanical properties and the environmental effect related to hazardous substance discharge having manufactured a wood-magnesium laminated composite are as follows. The thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of WML board was improved by about 28~109 percent over magnesium board due to the low thermal conductivity of wood. The adhesive strength of WML board showed a similar result to that of plywood as it exceeds 0.7N/㎟, the adhesive standard of wood veneer which is presented by KS F 3101. Bending strength and screw holding strength were more improved by manufacturing WML board than magnesium board. The WML board manufactured in this study satisfied the criteria for emissions of hazardous substances prescribed in the Indoor Air Quality Control Act, and confirmed the possibility of development as a new wood-based composite material that can replace existing inorganic materials.
Existing wood decks brings out negligent accident because fastener can be pulled-out by cyclic load of pedestrians. When deck and joist are connected, it also causes the problems, which are cracking of wood decks and rapid decay by material of fastener. In this study, strength property of deck unit using reinforced plastic connector made by domestic A company was evaluated. Southern yellow pine (Pinus palustris Miller) were used for deck material. Bending strength of deck units were implemented for fastener type and joist spacing (400, 600 mm). In the result, carbon steel screw into reinforced plastic connector was the best in average bending strength(Joist spacing : 400, 600 mm). In the result of bending strength for joist-width (40, 50, 70, 80 mm), the average maximum bending strength was measured when the joist spacing was 40 mm.
