An intermeshing corotating twin screw extruder is mainly used for compounding polymeric materials. Twin screw extruder can adopt modular-type screw configurations, which directly controls the quality and productivity of the products. The types, shapes, and specifications of the screw and kneading elements are summarized, and the effects of screw configuration on the processabiliy of the materials are discussed. The principles of screw configuration universally applied to mass production of general-purpose resins are explained, and the guidelines of screw combination according to the roles of feeding, melt mixing, and metering zones are listed. The strategies of screw combination suitable for various cases, such as side feeding of liquid additives or inorganic fillers, reactive extrusion, devolatilization process, production of products requiring bright color and transparency, and processing of materials with low apparent specific gravity, are presented.

System parameters (extrusion temperature, extrusion pressure, specific mechanical energy, mean residence time) were analysed on three different screw configurations during twin-screw extrusion of wheat bran. Experiments were conducted over a screw speed of $280{\sim}380\;rpm$, feed rate of $22{\sim}38\;kg/hr$ and moisture content of $17{\sim}33%$ using screws assembled with 3, 4, and 5 reverse screw elements (RSE) adjacent to the heating zone of the barrel. Extrusion temperature increased with increasing RSE but it decreased with increasing feed rate and moisture content. Decreasing the filling ratio of the screw resulted in a lower extrusion pressure, and increasing the length of the RSE gave similar results due to the higher temperature and lower viscosity of melted dough. It was also observed that increasing the feed rate and decreasing moisture content resulted in the reduced extrusion pressure. Specific mechanical energy (SME) decreased when the feed rate and moisture content increased, and SME increased when using RSE posses from 3 to 5. Screw configuration posses with 4 RSE yielded the longest RT, and the smaller the die hole, the higher the RT. In contrast, RT decreased when the feed rate increased. With increasing moisture content RT for 3 RSE increased, but that for 4 and 5 RSE decreased.
The residence time distributions were measured experimentally to determine the effect of reverse screw elements at various screw configurations in twin screw extruder. A simple model was used to estimate the number of filled C-chamber on the forwarding screw. The inclusion of reverse-screw elements resulted in the increase of median residence time and the broadening of color distribution. True residence time was affected by using the reverse screw elements just before the die. The number of filled C-chamber was decreased with the increase of screw revolution speed at the same screw configuration.

To optimize the properties of compounds, effective mixing is of importance to achieve adequate distribution and dispersion of filler particles. A variety of mixing elements have been used for twin-screw extruders in order to improve the mixing efficiency. In this study, the effects of 10 screw configurations on the filler dispersion were investigated for the calcium carbonate filled polystyrene processed in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The state of filler dispersion was characterized by equipped with a photodiode. The experimental results indicated that the type and position of mixing elements primarily affected the degree of filler dispersion.
To examine the effect of the individual operational variables on extrusion process, test trials of the fractional factorial design of the three process variables at three levels, including feed rate, screw speed and die openings, were carried out by using a laboratory scale twin-screw extruder with three different screw configuration for corn grit with the water addition fixed at 15% of the powder feed rate. As the increase of feed rate, while extrusion temperature(ET), specific mechanical energy input (SME), and residence time(RT) were showed the tendency to decrease, extrusion pressure(EP) was increased and as the increase of screw speed, ET, SME and EP were showed the tendency to increase, but RT was decreased. However, as increase the number of die hole, all system parameters were showed the tendency to decrease. The influence of the change in each process parameters was increased as the increase of the number of reverse element in screw configuration. In case of using the screw configuration with increasing number of reverse element at the condition of same process parameters, ET, SME and RT was increased, but EP was decreased. The functional relationships of the system parameters to the process parameters can be quantified by using multiple regression equations(mostly R-sq>0.90) and maped on suface response diagrams to expedite evaluation.
The locking compression plates-distal femur(LCP-DF) are being widely used for surgical management of the extra-articular complex fractures of the distal femur. They feature locking mechanism between the screws and the screw holes of the plate to provide stronger fixation force with less number of screws than conventional compression bone plate. However, their biomechanical efficacies are not fully understood, especially regarding the number of the screws inserted and their optimal configurations. In this study, we investigated effects of various screw configurations in the shaft and the condylar regions of the femur in relation to structural stability of LCP-DF system. For this purpose, a baseline 3-D finite element (FE) model of the femur was constructed from CT-scan images of a normal healthy male and was validated. The extra-articular complex fracture of the distal femur was made with a 4-cm defect. Surgical reduction with LCP-DF and bone screws were added laterally. To simulate various cases of post-op screw configurations, screws were inserted in the shaft (3~5 screws) and the condylar (4~6 screws) regions. Particular attention was paid at the shaft region where screws were inserted either in clustered or evenly-spaced fashion. Tied-contact conditions were assigned at the bone screws-plate whereas general contact condition was assumed at the interfaces between LCP-DF and bone screws. Axial compressive load of 1,610N(2.3 BW) was applied on the femoral head to reflect joint reaction force. An average of 5% increase in stiffness was found with increase in screw numbers (from 4 to 6) in the condylar region, as compared to negligible increase (less than 1%) at the shaft regardless of the number of screws inserted or its distribution, whether clustered or evenly-spaced. At the condylar region, screw insertion at the holes near the fracture interface and posterior locations contributed greater increase in stiffness (9~13%) than any other locations. Our results suggested that the screw insertion at the condylar region can be more effective than at the shaft during surgical treatment of fracture of the distal femur with LCP-DF. In addition, screw insertion at the holes close to the fracture interface should be accompanied to ensure better fracture healing.

In this paper, based on the concept of solid particles' hovering problem the working formula for the channel design of a Decanter-type centrifuge were derived. The Shields' diagram and its curve-fitting formula were used in determining the criterion of particle size for the sediment. By using these formula the designer can determine the sectional configuration of the channel, such as the liquid depth, the normal pitch of the screw-blade arrangement and the bowl diameter.

Background: The purpose of the present study was to determine how long superior screws alone or in combination with posterior placement of metaglene screws protruding and penetrating into the scapular spine in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty affect the strength of the scapular spine in a fresh cadaveric scapular model. Methods: Seven fresh cadaver scapulas were allocated to the control group (short posterior and superior screws) and seven scapulars to the study group (spine base fixation with a four long screws, three with both long superior and long posterior screws). Results: The failure load was lower in the spine fixation group (long screw, 869 N vs. short screw, 1,123 N); however, this difference did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05). All outside-in long superior or superior plus posterior screws failed due to scapular spine base fracture; failures in the short screw group were due to acromion fracture. An additional posterior outside-in screw failed to significantly decrease the failure load of the acromion spine. Conclusions: The present study highlights the significance of preventing a cortical breach or an outside-in configuration when a superior or posterior screw is inserted into the scapular spine base.

The Jacobian and singularity analysis of parallel robots is necessary to analyze robot motion. The derivations of the Jacobian matrix and singularity configuration are complicated and have no geometrical earning in the velocity form of the Jacobian matrix. In this study, the screw theory is used to derive the Jacobian of parallel robots. The statics form of the Jacobian has a geometrical meaning. In addition, singularity analysis can be performed by using the geometrical values. Furthermore, this study shows that the screw theory is applicable to redundantly actuated robots as well as non-redundant robots.
