  • Scour is the physical or chemical attack of flowing water which excavates and carries away material from stream beds and banks. Especially, hydraulic structures such as bridge piers and abutments placed in the channel causes the changes of the flow pattern like acceleration, the formation of vortices, and scour around the structures. Channel scour, especially bridge pier scour is the leading cause of bridge failures. It is very important to apply appropriate methods for both of scour analysis and protection. In this paper, several methods world-widely used for bridge scour analysis and protection are introduced and compared.

  • This paper attempts to qualitatively characterize scour erosion processes near USGS constriction type-I structures with vertical embankments and abutments. The scour dimensions and rates of sand beds around the structure models were measured in a rectangular flume. The test results showed that scour took place at a rapid rate at initial stages, which were followed by a stage of slow and general scour with greater extends. The maximum scour depth was observed near upstream corner of embankments. Empirical relationships for scour dimensions were derived, that were based on the results from a dimensional analysis of scour processes.

  • Scour vulnerability evaluation for shallow foundations was performed to assure bridge safety against scour in the national capital region. The case studies for 26 shallow foundations consisted of site investigation including boring test, bridge scour analysis for the design flood, bearing capacity evaluation of the bridge foundation before and after scour, and comprehensive evaluation of bridge scour vulnerability. Bridge scour vulnerability was determined based on the interdisciplinary concept considering predicted scour depth for the design floods and bearing capacity of foundation as well as dimensions of foundation. Nine of 26 shallow foundations showed the potential future vulnerability to scour with significant decrease in the bearing capacity of foundations due to scour and the remaining 17 were expected to maintain their stability against scour.

  • The scour phenomenon involves the erosive potential of flowing water and the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. The scour phenomenon in cohesive soils is much different from that in non-cohesive soils. Granular soils resist erosion by their buoyant weight and the friction between the particles. The soil particles are dislodged individually from the bed under the action of the eroding fluid. Scour in cohesive soils is much slower and more dependent on soil properties than that in non-cohesive soils. Therefore the analysis models for estimating erosion characteristics of cohesive soils should consider not only flowing water but also the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. In this study, erosion characteristics for the clay-silt mixed soil will be analyzed as a fundamental study for development of bridge scour analysis and design system considering scour resistance capacity of a soil. For this analysis, the relationship between scour characteristics and soil properties was evaluated through scour rate test with Kaolinite samples remolded using various loading and contents of silt.

  • In this study, the investigation of hydraulic characteristics and the pier data for the rivers in Youngseo area of Gangwon Province was carried out and the evaluation and comparison between the values from existing formulas and the values from the model tests was conducted, along with the statistical sensitivity analysis of the elements influencing the scour. As a result, the deviation between the values calculated from the existing formulas and the model tests appeared to be 1.09%~63.98% as the piers were getting larger, which indicated that the existing formulas were not appropriate to estimate the scour in the rivers in Gangwon area. And the formula which estimates the scour with the size of the pier only, among the existing ones, was far behind in estimating the sensitivity because of insufficient incorporation of the hydraulic characteristics, though it is convenient to estimate the value. The sensitivity analysis of the value from the model tests and the depth of the scour proved the significant impact on scour by the size of the pier and water depth, indicating 64% and 36%, respectively. In this study, the formula developed through the regression analysis performed based on the values from the model tests, which appeared to be appropriate for the rivers in Gangwon Province, was proposed.

  • The leading cause of bridge failures is scouring bed material from around bridge foundations. Many advanced countries such as U.S.A., U.K., the Netherlands and New Zealand have developed and revised their own bridge scour manuals fit for their field conditions. In Korea, researches for reducing bridge failures during floods have concentrated on analysis, laboratory test and countermeasure of bridge scour during the last ten years. however no comprehensive manual for evaluating bridge scour and for identifying the conditions of bridge foundations has been provided yet. In this study, a new bridge scour manual is developed for the accurate evaluation of bridge scour, which reflects domestic field conditions with various streambed materials. The SRICOS method and the Erodibility Index Method are suggested for fine-grained soils and weathered rocks, respectively. In addition, bridge scour analysis algorithms are developed for field engineers to estimate bridge scour depth and to evaluate the susceptibility of bridge scour with ease.

  • If scour is occurred at shallow foundation of bridge, seismic performance of the bridge will be reduced. In order to evaluate accurate seismic response of bridge according to scour depths, modeling of foundation reflecting scour effect is important. In this study, taking into account the effect of the reduction in embedment depth of the shallow foundation by scouring, the soil around the foundation is modelled as an equivalent soil spring with various stiffness. Seismic fragility analyses for 3 types of bridges subjected to 4 types of ground motions classified into Site Class A, B, C, D are evaluated according to several scour depths. From the fragility analysis results, it can be observed that the deeper the scour depth, the higher probability of exceeding damage states. Also, seismic failure probability of asymmetric bridge is higher than that of symmetric bridge.

  • Bridge dynamic behaviors and the failure of the foundation are examined in this study under seismic excitations including the local scour effect. The simplified mechanical model, which can consider the effect of various influence elements, is proposed to simulate the bridge motions. The scour depths around the foundations are estimated by the CSU equation recommended by the HEC-18 and the local scour effect upon global bridge motions is then considered by applying various foundation stiffness based upon the reduced embedded depths. From the simulation results, it is found that seismic responses of a bridge with the same scour depth for both foundations increase due to the local scour effect. The bridge scour is found to be significant under weak and moderate seismic intensity. The recovery durations of the foundation stiffness after local scour are found to be critical in the estimation of the probability of foundation failure under earthquakes. Therefore, the safety of the whole bridge system should be conducted with the consideration of the scour effect upon the foundations and the recovery duration of stiffness should be determined rationally.

  • Total scour depth at a bridge is comprised of three components: long-term changes, contraction scour and local scour. Therefore, the analysis of long-term bed elevation changes is very important in the estimation of total scour depth at bridge sites. In this research, long-term bed elevation changes at the Namhan River Bridge are analysed using CHARIMA and HEC-6 models. The results show that, for 5-year steady normal stream flow, the bed elevation is aggreded by 45cm for CHARIMA model but degraded by 5cm for HEC-6 model. For 5-year unsteady flow, the bed elevation is changed greatly and it has a great influence on the estimation of total scour depth. Therefore, to make a proper estimation of total scour depth, not only contraction scour and local scour, but also long-term bed elevation changes should be estimated precisely.
