Brain Activation in Generating Hypothesis about Biological Phenomena and the Processing of Mental Arithmetic: An fMRI Study (생명 현상에 대한 과학적 가설 생성과 수리 연산에서 나타나는 두뇌 활성: fMRI 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate brain activity both during the processing of a scientific hypothesis about biological phenomena and mental arithmetic using 3.0T fMRI at the KAIST. For this study, 16 healthy male subjects participated voluntarily. Each subject's functional brain images by performing a scientific hypothesis task and a mental arithmetic task for 684 seconds were measured. After the fMRI measuring, verbal reports were collected to ensure the reliability of brain image data. This data, which were found to be adequate based on the results of analyzing verbal reports, were all included in the statistical analysis. When the data were statistically analyzed using SPM2 software, the scientific hypothesis generating process was found to have independent brain network different from the mental arithmetic process. In the scientific hypothesis process, we can infer that there is the process of encoding semantic derived from the fusiform gyrus through question-situation analysis in the pre-frontal lobe. In the mental arithmetic process, the area combining pre-frontal and parietal lobes plays an important role, and the parietal lobe is considered to be involved in skillfulness. In addition, the scientific hypothesis process was found to be accompanied by scientific emotion. These results enabled the examination of the scientific hypothesis process from the cognitive neuroscience perspective, and may be used as basic materials for developing a learning program for scientific hypothesis generation. In addition, this program can be proposed as a model of scientific brain-based learning.

What Do Web Users Know about Skin Self-Examination and Melanoma Symptoms?

  • Background: Skin self-examination (SSE) may facilitate early diagnosis of melanoma at a potentially curable stage. Little data are available concerning the SSE frequency and knowledge about the symptoms of melanoma in non-patient populations. The aim of our study was to assess the performance of skin self-examination, recognition of potential melanoma symptoms as well as behavior related to sun exposure among web users in Poland. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among readers of a scientific portal. Invited respondents were asked to complete an online questionnaire. Finally, statistical analysis was conducted on 4,919 surveys towards potential clinical signs of melanoma and SSE performance. Results: Approximately 60% of respondents had ever performed SSE in their life. Only 18.4 % declared performance on a regular, monthly, basis. Factors promoting this activity were established to be bigger place of residence, higher education and sensitive skin phototype, higher level of knowledge concerning melanoma, safe tanning rules and, especially, past surgical excision of naevi. Declared longer use of tanning beds was linked to understanding better the importance of clinical features of melanoma. Awareness of hazardous behavior during sunbathing is associated with the attempts to change them. Conclusions: Regular SSE is not a common practice, whilst the knowledge about the clinical features of melanoma is varied. Therefore, constant pressure should be put on promotion of regular skin self-examination and teaching its proper techniques, including familiarity with the ABCD (asymmetry; border; color; diameter) rule and its extension of "EFG" (elevated, firm, progressive growth) criteria.

The Development of a Science Education Program for Gifted Elementary Students Based on the Biographies of Scientists (과학자를 소재로 한 초등과학영재 프로그램 개발)

  • The purposes of this study were to develop a science program using scientists as the material and to examine the effects of this in teaching science to gifted elementary students. The program included low modules, each of which was devised based on the literature examination of the lives, scientific achievements and contributions of four scientists: Ju-Myeong Seok, Jang-Chun Woo, L. Pasteur, and M. Curie. In this study, the four modules were applied and taught to fifteen gifted children in the 6th grade. After the program was taught to the children, post-questionnaires, examination of the subjects' output, in-depth interviews and classroom investigations were carried out and analyzed by the researchers. The results of the study were as follows. The majority of the subjects showed a considerable amount of interest in the program, participated actively and enthusiastically in the given tasks until they solved the problems, and their output produced a number of novel ideas. The results of the post-questionnaires indicated that the program was appropriate fer the subjects and effective in teaching scientifically-gifted children. Moreover, the analysis of the in-depth interviews conducted with the subjects showed that the subjects had opportunities to think about scientific attitudes, the relationships between science, society and nations, the contributions that scientists can possibly make to society, and the identity of scientists, despite the existence of differences between individual children.

Looking at 'Well-Being' in Terms d Lifestyle: Healthy or Trendy? (생활양식으로서의 웰빙(Well-Being): 이론과 적용의 뿌리 찾기)

  • This paper is an attempt to discuss theoretical and empirical issues embedded in a rapidly dispersing well-being lifestyle in Korea. Increase of people's interests in health and well-being reflects the fact that Korea has been developed socially and economically to the level for common people to pursue the quality of life beyond survival or basic standards of life. The term, well-being life style, was first constructed and has been dispersed through mass media. Media contributes to popularize health issues and to deliver the importance of lifestyle for health promotion to the general public. Well-being lifestyle, initiated by media and joined with commercialism, however, reveal certain negative sides as well. Health or healthy lifestyle in Western societies has been rooted theoretically in the change of health paradigm and the political emphasis on the lifestyle for health promotion in policy implications. Well-being lifestyle in Korea, in lack of theoretical and institutional foundations, is being substantially formed into distorted consumerism. Based on the sociological theories of stratification, it might be necessary to discuss the well-being consumerism in respect of tension among people with different consuming power and the destruction of solid market principles. Considering well-being consumerism as a risk factor to societal well-being, it is also necessary to examine conflicting or misleading information about well-being and to explore the scientific knowledge and principles. All these discussions and examination need to be done with interdisciplinary efforts. Especially, tasks for developing application principles for everyday life are on hands of researchers in living sciences.

Development of the Three-tier Test Items for the Thinking Skills of the Scientific Inquiry (과학적 탐구 사고력의 3단계 선다형 평가 연구)

  • In order to assess students' higher mental abilities, such as scientific inquiry thinking skills, the essay type items would be more adequate than the multiple choice itmes. However, due to the present condition in which a huge number of students take the examination at the same time, it is inevitable to use the multiple choice type. For this reason, it is necessary to develop a new type of multiple choice items which can reduce the disadvantages of the traditional multiple choice type and can achieve a similar level of validity as subjective type assessment. The three-tier multiple choice test items which can be used for a large sample of students and especially for scientific inquiry thinking abilities, are proposed and examined. The three-tier multiple choice test items asked firstly conclusion or the results of calculation or experimental apparatus, secondly the processes of calculation or of developing conclusion, thirdly asking relevant scientific concepts. For the item analysis, 1 point was given to the correct answer, while 0 point was given to the wrong one. The data were processed through the computer program developed in Turbo C 2.0 language with an IBM compatable personal computer. The average score in the sub-items asking for scientific concepts was lower than that in the sub-items asking for results or processes. The score of guessing by chance in the three-tier multiple choice items was only 0.13%, so that the probability of making correct answers by just guessing would be extremely low. The three-tier multiple choice items, even if they are objective items, are thought to assess thinking skills of the scientific inquiry meaningfully excluding the possibility of guessing by chance.

An Analysis of Trends of Scientific Names presented in the Written Test for Engineer Landscape Architecture (조경기사 필기시험 중 조경식재분야 학명의 출제경향 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the tendencies of the written test questions regarding the scientific plant names in the subject of scenic planting in the national qualification test for landscape engineers. To achieve this purpose, targeting the 20 questions in the subject of scenic planting, the study chronologically analyzed the types of the presented questions about the scientific names of the plants, the changes in their year-to-year number, and their presentation frequency over the past 11 years from 2006 to 2016. The following was found by an analysis of the tendency of the questions presented over 11 years from 2006 to 2016 regarding the scientific plant names in scenic planting in the written test of the national technical qualification examination for landscape engineers. The number of these questions was 234, and they were classified into 13 items: scientific names, families/genuses/ species, characteristics, barks, roots, foliage, flowers, fruits, properties, places of origin, stalks, leave, and uses. After analyzing the examination question trends per year, the year in which the highest number of questions was given was 2013 at 56.6%; the ratio of questions asking botanical names increased until 2013, although that ratio decreased starting in 2014 due to consistent efforts from the landscaping field. The plant species most frequently asked about were Betula platyphylla and Taxus cuspidata and others frequently asked about included Pinus densiflora, Acer palmatum, Forsythia koreana, Cercis chinensis, Robinia pseudoacacia, Cornus officinalis, Zelkova serrata, Abies holophylla, Camellia japonica, Sophora japonica, Chaenomeles sinensis, which were asked about more than 10 times. The number of plant species presented as question items or choice items was 240 and their presentation frequency was 806, Among these, 66 species were steadily presented more than five times. They were presented 486 times, accounting for 27.5% of all species. The number of the new plant species which began to be presented in 2009 were 119(49.58% including Quercus myrsinaefolia) of all 240 species, indicating that their presentation frequency was gradually increased. As a result of comparative analysis of questions on arbor and shrub, evergreen and leaf abscission that have been presented for recent 11 years, the questions on arbor were more than shrub, the questions on leaf abscission were more than evergreen.

A University's Role for Regional Innovation: Arizona Universities' Contribution to Regional Economic Growth

  • Over the last two decades, interest increased with regard to how some research universities made direct impacts on surrounding regional economic activities and growth. Although the role of basic research for most research universities has remained strong, pressure has intensified to broaden its missions to include helping local and regional economic development efforts. Consequently, many research universities have evolved their basic scientific research mission from the production of scientific knowledge to the sharing and exchange of knowledge with local industries by actively engaging in local economic development (Uyarra 2010). Previous examination has shown that most research universities contribute to local and regional economic development by various functions they provide. They are as follows: Creation of Knowledge, Human-capital creation, Transfer of existing know-how, Technological innovation, Capital investment, Regional leadership, Knowledge infrastructure production and Influence in regional milieu (Drucker and Goldstein 2007). This paper will review the existing literature on the role of universities and its impacts on local regional economic growth and development. In addition, this paper will show how two major research universities (The University of Arizona and Arizona State University) have contributed to the growth of Arizona during last two decades. It is believed that the existence of these two research universities have been instrumental in making industries more diverse and highly attractive, particularly in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

A Study on the Characteristics of Expression of Time-Space Concept in Media Art (미디어 아트에 나타난 시공간 개념의 표현 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The concept of time-space to be seen in the modem society has complex features at the points of scientific, philosophical, artistic, religious point of view. It has been brought up at a points of neo centric religious, philosophical view and then after, phenomenal approach and scientific approach were rendered through Newton and Einstein and so many scholar approaches affected the artistic field significantly. With such visual expression, it has affected the paintings for a long time till the 19th century, and then has affected various fields such as photography, film, video, computer, architecture and has currently affected the various space expressive of our daily lives and virtual space of digital. This study is to extract a visual and expressionistic characteristic through historical examination and multi-scholar analysis of time-space concept. Especially, by expanding the previous time and space concept, experimental cases and expressionistic characteristics has come up on the media art that offers various experience and by analyzing the expressionistic characteristics of the time-space concept expressed in media art, it is to extract the basic factors for the diversity of space experience.

Scientific Investigation and Emergency Conservation of Costumes Excavated from Sin-deucyeon tomb (신득연 묘 출토복식의 과학적 조사와 응급보존)

  • Excavated costumes included clothing that had been buried together with the corpse and shroud and unearthed during the excavation or the process transferring the tomb. The remains may easily get damaged under a different condition from the burial place, having gone through the deterioration process together with the corpse. In particular, since they are vulnerable to microbial propagation, suitable storage and conservation treatment immediately after excavation are required. Although more of them are unearthed in various parts of the country owing to exponential land development activities, they are rarely preserved properly due to a lack of appreciation of their value and a dearth of expert. Therefore, scientific examination and emergency preservation measures for the excavated costumes shall be described.

Brain activation pattern and functional connectivity network during classification on the living organisms

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate brain activation pattern and functional connectivity network during classification on the biological phenomena. Twenty six right-handed healthy science teachers volunteered to be in the present study. To investigate participants' brain activities during the tasks, 3.0T fMRI system with the block experimental-design was used to measure BOLD signals of their brain. According to the analyzed data, superior, middle and inferior frontal gyrus, superior and inferior parietal lobule, fusiform gyrus, lingual gyrus, and bilateral cerebellum were significantly activated during participants' carrying-out classification. The network model was consisting of six nodes (ROIs) and its fourteen connections. These results suggested the notion that the activation and connections of these regions mean that classification is consist of two sub-network systems (top-down and bottom-up related) and it functioning reciprocally. These results enable the examination of the scientific classification process from the cognitive neuroscience perspective, and may be used as basic materials for developing a teaching-learning program for scientific classification such as brain-based science education curriculum in the science classrooms.
