  • Factors and causal structures of pre-service elementary teachers about the critical thinking and the scientific literacy competency were investigated in this study. The third grade university students and the first grade university students in the metropolitan city participated in this study. The factor analysis method and the structural equation modeling method were used for the data analysis, and the following results were obtained. First, the third grade university students and the first grade university students recognized 'inquisitive thinking' factor and 'reflective thinking' factor as factors of the critical thinking, and 'scientific explanation' factor and 'evidence-based conclusion' factor as factors of the scientific literacy competency respectively. Second, the third grade university students showed more the influence from 'reflective thinking' factor to 'scientific explanation' factor and from 'reflective thinking' factor to 'evidence-based conclusion' factor than the first grade university students.

  • The purpose of this research is to suggest the roles of government through constructing models of regional scientific technology and information to develop regional innovation system, which can maximize international competitiveness of Korea. To do this, this research compares the characteristics and superiorities of each regional areas in Korea. Constructing DB for scientific technology and information is recognized as a primary factor for constructing scientific technology and information infrastructure. In regional areas, constructing DB for professional scientific technology and information and networks are regarded as a key factor for regional scientific technology and information. Also, the primary problem to be solved in the regional areas is to construct DB for scientific technology and information.

  • This report surveyed the trends of the fatalities related to the drug-toxicant (DT) and the drug abuse(DA), requested to analyze to the Central District Office of National Institute of Scientific Investigation for a year, 2002. The mortality related to DT in men was more common than that in the women. The most common age group of DT intoxication was 30's. (omitted)

  • Because people who take more than two drugs have increases, a simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous analysis of amphetamine, methamphetamine and nalbuphine in urine was developed. After alkalinization of the urine samples with 6 N-NaOH, the analytes were extracted using ethyl acetate, derivatized with MSTFA : TSIM : TMCS (= 100 : 2 : 5) prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) analysis with selected ion monitoring. • Diazepam (DZ) is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs as an antianxiety agent, muscle relaxant, and anticovulsant and sometimes causes intoxication due to accidental overdose, misuse or abuse. Screening or confirmation methods for DZ and NDZ in plasma are very important for clinical and toxicological studies and in forensic cases. GC/MS assay with SPE was developed for the determination of diazepam and its metabolite, nordiazepam in human plasma. Diazepam in plasma was extracted by a rapid and sensitive procedure based on C18 bonded-phase extraction. (omitted)

  • Colchicine is a drug well known for its use in the therapy of acute attacks of gouty arthritis. Two death caused by oral ingestion of colchicine was reported. Two persons were all women. The one was 34 years old woman and with his boyfriend in a inn and the other was a housewife. The first one was a alcoholic but his boyfriend was afflicted with gout. So her boy friend carried over about 60 tablets of colchicine, 4 tablets of naltrexone and 22 tablets of fluoxetine. After her death there were remained colchicine, 2 tabs, naltraxone 4 tabs and fluoxetine 22 tabs. (omitted)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a scientific inquiry model that makes scientific inquiry accessible to science teachers as well as students. To develop a scientific inquiry model, we investigated the research process demonstrated by ten scientists who were working at academic research institutions or industrial research institutions. We collected data through scientists' journal articles, lab meetings and seminars, and observation of their inquiry process. After we analyzed the scientists' inquiry strategies and processes of inquiry, we finally developed the Scientist's Methodology of Investigation Process model named SMIP. The SMIP model consists of four domains, 15 stages, and link questions, such as "if, why", and "how". The SMIP model stressed that inquiry process is a selective process rather than a linear or a circular process. Overall, these findings can have implication science educators in their attempt to design instruction to improve the scientific inquiry process.
