This descriptive study was designed to find out the relation between self concept and ethical concept of nurses. The data were collected from 224 staff nurses in a tertiary hospital located in Suwon city during February 24 to March 7, 2001. Self concept was measured with questionnaire developed by chung (1965) and ethical concept was measured with the questionnaire developed by the researcher. The 5 point Likert scale questionnaire had 95 items. The results were summarized as follows: 1) The mean score of self concept was 3.11. The ethical concept were measured in 4 areas and mean scores were : accountability, 3,93; collaboration, 3.70; caring, 3.63; an advocacy, 3.15. So accountability was the area with the highest score in ethical concept. 2) Nurses' self concept was significantly related to ethical concept (collaboration, r=.34, p<.001; advocacy, r=.32, p<.001; caring, r=.28, p<.001; and responsibility, r=.23, p<.001). 3) The self concept was significant in age(F=3.28, p=.000) and the ethical concept was significant in age(F=15.88, p=.000), education level(t=2.16, p=0.03), career(F=5.16, p=.001) In conclusion, there was a significant relationship between self concept and ethical concept of nurses. High score in accountability may be related to high level of legal responsibility of nurses. This finding suggests that it is the length of nursing career is significantly related to both self-concept and ethical concept. Thus, it is important to improve self concept in order to improve ethical concept of nurses from early the beginning of their career.
A longitudinal study of self-concept and functional independence in 22 adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy is reported. 30 adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy completed Korean Self-Concept Scale, Modified Barthel Index, and a questionnaire examining demographic and medical factors. Functional independence was measured by Modified Barthel Index. Two years later, 22 of the 30 adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy completed same Korean Self-Concept Scale and Modified Barthel Index. Adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy were not changed on self -concept scores between test and retest. At retest adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy scored significantly lower than at test on Modified Barthel Index. Compared to scale norms, subjects had significantly lower Total Self, Physical Self, Social Self, Self Satisfaction, Self Behavior scores. Age, years of education, and functional independence were significantly related self-concept. Functional independence was significantly related years of education.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between professional self-concept, professional autonomy, self-esteem, and job satisfaction of clinical nurses. Method: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 289 clinical nurses who worked in one of 4 hospitals located in B City. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in job satisfaction according to marital status, current position, shift pattern, and average income. There was a significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and professional autonomy, self-esteem and job satisfaction. Job satisfaction showed a significant positive correlation with professional autonomy and self-esteem. The significant factors influencing job satisfaction were professional self-concept, self-esteem and professional autonomy, which explained 29.5% of the variance in job satisfaction. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the important role-related variables of professional self-concept, self-esteem and professional autonomy of clinical nurses are significantly related, and that as, professional self-concept is an important factor for job satisfaction of clinical nurses, strategies to increase professional self-concept need to be developed.
This study attempted to analyze the psychological impact of mentally retarded children on their normal siblings in the family. The data were collected from siblings of 130 mentally retarded children using a questionnaire with a semantic differential scale. ANOVA and simple correlation coefficient tests were employed to examine the relationship between the siblings’ self-concept and psychological frustration. The major results of the study are as following. 1. Female siblings showed a lower degree of self-concept than male siblings. 2. No significant relationship was found between self-concept and frustration stimuli. 3. Parent related frustration stimuli was no significantly different in sex age, siblings, religion, and retardation level of mentally retarded children. 4. Siblings related frustration stimuli was significantly related to only one item in sex. 5. Their peers related frustration stimuli while sex as well as religion was significantly related to only one item.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of middle school students' stress in relation to certain variables, those of grade, gender, academic achievement, coping behavior and self-concept. The subjects were 574 students selected from 4 middle schools in the Incheon area. The instruments included a stress index, coping behavior questionnaire and self-concept inventory. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA (Scheff test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that middle school students' stress was influenced significantly by the grade, gender and achievement in school. Also, coping behavior and self-concept were influenced significantly by the grade, gender, and achievement in school. Correlation analysis indicated that student's stress and certain coping behavior were postively correlated, especially avoidance coping behavior indicated a higher correlation to students' stress than active coping behavior. The relationship between stress and self-concept indicated a negative high correlation. It was also found that avoidance coping behavior, family self-concept, general self-concept, school and class self-concept, grade and academic achievement were significant predictors of middle school students' stress.
This study addresses the relationship between individual differences regarding self-concept, measured by Self Concept Clarity (SCC) scale and Relational-Interdependent Self-Construal and relationships (RISC) scale, and diverse affective consequences after choice behavior. We hypothesized that lower self-concept clarity and higher relational interdependence would be related to increased susceptibility to choice context-for example, how a choice set is constructed based on one's initial preference. We examined how variations in a choice set can produce different affective consequences after making choices, and investigated the underlying neural mechanism using fMRI. In this experiment, participants first rated their preferences for art posters, and made a series of choices from a presented set. After the choice task, they completed post-choice measures including preferences for the chosen posters, as well as measures of their self-concept clarity and relational interdependence. Our behavioral results demonstrated that when participants faced more conflicting choice context, self-concept clarity was related to more positive affective consequences after choice, whereas relational interdependence was correlated with a lower second-rated attractiveness of the chosen option. The neuroimaging analysis of choice-making revealed that self-concept clarity and the degree of their relational interdependence served as modulators in shaping how one perceives and experiences the same decision-making process. These results have theoretical and practical importance in that it is one of the first studies investigating the influence of the individual differences regarding self-concept on value-based decision making process among diverse choice set contexts.
A concept is a building block of a theory. The purpose of a concept analysis is to clarify the critical attributes of a concept and identify its real meaning, particularly if the concept is not understood in a clear and accurate manner. This study was conducted to analyze the concept of support, which has been adopted from another discipline and unclearly used in nursing science. For concept analysis of this study, Walker and Avant's method was used. Support is defined as a domain with emotional. informational. material and evaluative aspects. Critical attributes of the concept of support included (1) an experience of support between a support provider and a client, (2) communication, (3) a relationship of mutual interchange of emotional, informational, material, evaluative support, and (4) intention, Cases related to the concept of support included model cases and appendix cases (against. boundary, and related). Antecedents of support were anxiety, depression, and loss of self-esteem, and consequences of support were comfort, increase of self-esteem, and trust. Based on these results, a nursing intervention that can provide a better quality of life for the prevention of diseases, health management, and health promotion may be developed in the future.
In this study, the effects of a self-assessment on the students' science concept understanding and science-related attitudes were investigated. Student's perceptions towards the self-assessment were also examined. Five classes from a middle school in Gyunggi Province were chosen. Two of those classes were assigned to the control group that no self-assesment tool was applied to and the other 3 classes were assigned to the experimental group which a self-assess-ment tool developed for this study was applied to. The experimental group was further divided into two groups for imple-ment of two kinds of programs. One experimental group was provided some feedback such as solutions to problems and the other was not provided any type of feedback. The tests of science-related attitudes were administered before and after the instruction period. The science concepts understanding test was done only after the instruction. The results of this study were as follows. There were significant differences between the experimental group and control group in under-standing of scientific concepts. The enhancement of science-related attitudes was also higher for the experimental group. Providing feedback to students was more effective in the improvement of students' science-related attitudes. However, there were no significant differences in understanding of scientific concepts in relation to the feedback in experiment groups. From the above results, it was acknowledged thet self-assessment applied to the middle school science class showed considerably positive influences on the improvements of the understanding of scientific concepts and science-related attitudes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the causal relationship of familial factors (parental acceptance, autonomy, and family satisfaction), social support (teacher's support and friend's support), school achievement, self-concept, and school adjustment. Based on preceding research, this study established a path model of school adjustment and its related variables. Methods: Two thousand six hundred and twenty nine middle school students participated in this study. Data were collected by a visit-survey with an organized questionnaire and was analyzed by the SPSS and AMOS programs. Results: Self-concept showed a significantly direct influence to school adjustment while both family satisfaction and school achievement directly and indirectly influenced school adjustment. Parental acceptance, autonomy, and social support indirectly influenced school adjustment. Conclusion: These results imply that first, family satisfaction, and self-concept are essential to solve the problems of school adjustment. Especially friend's support, teacher's support and school achievement should help improve the self-concept and school adjustment. Second, a variety of programs are available for schools to employ in an effort to provide interventions for students who demonstrate school maladjustment. Finally, it is necessary for family, school and society members to comprehensively cooperate to improve school adjustment.
Although everyone grows old, perception about the aging process and aging as measured physiologically vary widely. Perecptions of aging have psychologically influence on physical aging. This study was to examine the relationships between, self-concept, perception of aging, and physical aging in the elderly and to contribute to the theory development which may direct nursing intervention to promote well-being of the aged. Subjects were 70 women residents of a nursing home for the elderly in Seoul. Data collection was done from May 15 to June 15, 1988 using interview schedules and mechanical instruments. The instruments were selected items from the Health Self Concept Scale developed by Jacox and Stewart for self concept, and Secord and Jourad's Body Cathexis Scale and Osgood's Semantic Differential Scale for perception of aging. Physical aging was measured by mechanical instruments, inspection, questions, and palpation. The data were analysed for mean, 1-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient using an S.P.S.S computerized program. The results of the analysis were as follows. 1. The mean level of self concept for the subject group was 16.97(SD=$\pm$6.17)in a range from 6-30. The mean level of perception of aging was 39.6. (SD=$\pm$6.51) in a range from 13-65. The mean level of physical aging was 14.09(SD=$\pm$2.05)in a range from 8-40. 2. Relationships among self - concept, perception of aging, and physical aging. 1) There was a positive relationship between self-concept and perception of aging(r=0.4461, p=0.000). 2) There was a negative relationship between physical aging and perception of aging(r=-0.2975, p=0.006). 3) There was a tendancy toward a negative relationship between physical aging and self -concept, but not a significant relationship (r=-0.1033, p=0.197). 3. 1) No general charcteristic variables were related to self concept. 2) The general characteristic variable related to the level of perception of aging was religion (t=4. 17, p=0.001). 3) The general characteristic variable related to the level of physical aging was age (F=12.008, p=0.000). There was a significant relationship between self - cencept and perception of aging, and between physical aging and perception of aging. Therefore nursing intervention should focus on promoting a positive perception of aging and strengthening self- concept during the physical aging process.
