Analyzing Science Teachers' Understandings about Scientific Argumentation in terms of Scientific Inquiry

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate science teachers' understandings about scientific argumentation in the classroom. Seven structured interview protocols were developed, asking the definition of scientific inquiry, the differentiation between scientific inquiry and hands-on activity, the opportunity of student argumentation, explicit teaching strategies for scientific argumentation, the critical example of argumentation, the criteria of successful argumentation, and the barrier of developing argumentation. The results indicate that there are differences and similarities in understandings about scientific argumentation between two groups of middle school teachers and upper elementary. Basically, teachers at middle school define scientific inquiry as the opportunity of practicing reasoning skills through argumentation, while teachers at upper elementary define it as the more opportunities of practicing procedural skills through experiments rather than of developing argumentation. Teachers in both groups have implemented a teaching strategy called "Claim-Evidence Approach," for the purpose of providing students with more opportunities to develop arguments. Students' misconception, limited scientific knowledge and perception about inquiry as a cycle without the opportunity of using reasoning skills were considered as barriers for implementing authentic scientific inquiry in the classroom.

지구 환경에 대한 예비 중등 교사의 환경 인식 (The Environmental Perceptions of Pre-service Secondary School Teachers about the Global Environment)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 예비 중등 교사를 대상으로 지구 환경에 대한 환경 인식, 지구 환경의 하위 영역에 따른 환경 인식, 그리고 전공에 따른 환경 인식에 차이가 있는지를 조사하는 것이다. 이를 위해 '성장과 기술의 부정적 결과', '인류와 자연의 관계', '삶의 질', '생물권의 한계'의 4가지 하위 영역으로 구성된 NEP 검사 도구를 사용하였다. 연구 결과, 대부분의 예비 중등 교사들은 생태학적 환경 인식을 지니고 있었으며, 전공에 따라서도 유사한 환경 인식을 지니고 있었다. 그러나, 환경 관련 교육의 경험 유무에 따라서는 유의한 차이를 나타내었다.

2015 개정 교육과정 과학과 교과역량에 대한 초등교사의 인식과 적용 실태 분석 (Analysis of Teachers' Perception and Application Status of Science Subject Competencies of 2015 Revised Curriculum in Elementary Schools)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze field application of science subject competences of the 2015 revised curriculum for the second year of application. For this purpose, a survey with 133 elementary school teachers, and in-depth interviews with 10 teachers were conducted. According to the results, elementary school teachers had a positive awareness toward the science subject competence, which is a characteristic of the 2015 revised science curriculum, and teachers were applying the science subject competence to their own classes. This tendency was stronger in teachers in science-leading schools than in teachers in regular schools. Teachers wanted support for applying science subject competencies to their classes. To support this, it is necessary to provide the curriculum materials focused on science subject competencies, reinforce teacher training on competence-related curriculum, and activate the professional teacher community.

예비 고등학생들과 고등학교 과학 교사들의 '신소재'에 대한 인식 탐색 (Investigation of Prospective High School Students' and Science Teachers' Views on 'Advanced Material')

  • 본 연구의 목적은 2009 개정 교육과정에 맞추어 개편된 고등학교 '과학' 교과서에 새롭게 도입된 '신소재'에 대한 예비 고등학생들과 고등학교 과학 교사들의 인식을 조사하여 신소재 수업을 효과적으로 진행하기 위해 필요한 기초자료를 제시하는 것이다. 서울, 인천, 경기 지역의 예비 고등학생 1,499명과 과학 교사 123명을 대상으로 설문을 진행하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들과 교사들의 신소재에 대한 태도는 긍정적이었지만 신소재에 대한 관심은 매우 낮았다. 학생들은 개정 과학 교과서의 신소재 단원에 대해 높은 관심을 보이지 않았고, 교사들도 신소재 단원 수업을 어렵게 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 학생들과 교사들의 신소재에 대한 인지도와 신소재 관련 지식에 대한 이해도는 낮은 편이었다. 학생과 교사 모두 다양한 경로를 통하여 신소재에 대해 접했던 것으로 나타났으나 신소재에 대해 잘 알고 있다고 응답한 학생과 교사는 많지 않았으며, 신소재에 대한 구체적인 정보를 올바르게 이해하고 있지 못한 교사들도 다수 있었다. 셋째, 학생과 교사 모두 신소재 수업이 필요하다는 점에 대해서는 공감하고 있었다. 신소재의 용도에 대해 알 필요가 있으며 매체 활용 수업을 가장 선호한다는 공통점을 나타냈지만 학생들은 교사들보다 체험학습을 선호하는 등 교사와 학생 입장에서 원하는 수업 진행 방식에는 차이점도 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 신소재 수업을 진행하는 교사들이 필요로 하는 것과 이들이 수업을 계획하고 진행할 때 고려할 점들을 제안하였다.

초등학교 과학 교과서의 읽기자료에 대한 교사와 학생의 인식 (Teachers' and Students' Perceptions of the Reading Materials in Elementary School Science Textbooks)

  • In this study, we investigated elementary school teachers' and students' perceptions of the reading materials in science textbooks. Participants were 181 teachers from 23 elementary schools who were teaching science and 643 third- to sixth-grade students from 12 elementary schools. A questionnaire for teachers consisted of 18 items and a questionnaire for students consisted of 11 items about their perceptions of the reading materials in science textbooks. Nine to twelve items, according to grades, examining the actual uses of each reading material in science textbooks were also included to both questionnaires. The results indicated that teachers have positive perceptions about reading materials and frequently use them in case of needs for supplement and/or enrichment of science learning. Novice teachers were found to have less positive perceptions about reading materials than expert teachers. Over 70 percent of students responded that they read all reading materials. Fifth- and sixth-grade students were tended to have less positive perceptions about reading materials than third-grade students. Finally, students tended to have more positive perceptions about reading materials than their teachers.

예비유아교사의 과학교육에 대한 인식: 과학 교수효능감, 과학교육 목표, 과학교수 방법을 중심으로 (The Perception about Science Education of Preservice Early Childhood Teachers' - Focused on Their Science Teaching Efficacy, Goals and Methods -)

  • This study investigates how well pre-teachers in preschools aware the importance of science teaching methods, goals and efficacy, and how different the pre-teachers recognize the importance of methods and goals in science teaching according to the levels of their science teaching efficacy. The subjects were 207 pre-service preschool teachers in Chonnam University and Chonbuk University. The data were collected by using three questionnaires("Science teaching efficacy", "Science teaching goal" and "Science teaching method"). The data were analyzed by a t-test and descriptive statistic. The results are as follows: first, the efficacy levels of the pre-teachers are higher than the average. The pre-teachers perceive a 'process-oriented' goal more importantly than a 'content-oriented' goal in early science education. Also, they recognize science teaching methods as being significant in the order of an 'interactive' approach, an 'activity-discovery' approach and a 'knowledge-transmission' approach. Second, the pre-teachers with high teaching efficacy recognize a 'process-oriented' goal as being more important than those with low teaching efficacy do.

과학교육에서 융복합 교육에 대한 교사의 인식과 경험 탐색 - 과학교사 포커스 그룹 논의를 중심으로 (Exploring Teachers' Perceptions and Experiences of Convergence Education in Science Education : Based on Focus Group Interviews with Science Teachers)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 학교 과학교육에서 융복합 교육의 실제적인 의미와 수행 방식을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 과학 교사들의 포커스 그룹 면담법을 이용하였으며, 과학교육의 관점으로부터 교육적 목적과 내용을 통합하는 방식에 대한 과학 교사들의 인식과 실제적인 지식을 도출하였다. 4명의 과학 교사들을 대상으로 한 2차의 포커스 그룹 면담에서는 융복합 교육의 개념, 가능성, 수행, 체계적 지원 등에 대한 내용이 질문되고 논의되었다. 면담의 결과는 질적으로 분석되었으며, 융복합 교육에 대한 교사들의 인식을 다섯 가지 주요 주제로 구분하여 주요 범주로 사용하였다. 이들은 1) 관련 개념과 근거, 2) 내용, 방법 및 평가, 3) 융복합 교육에 적합한 과학교과의 특성, 4) 융복합 교육을 수행하는 데 필요한 교사의 인식과 전문성과 5) 이들을 가능하게 하기 위한 환경적 조건 등이었다. 이로부터 융복합교육을 수행하고 미래 사회를 위해 과학교육을 재정향하는 것과 관련된 개념적이고 실제적인 쟁점들을 논의하였다.

과학 체험 프로그램 운영이 예비교사의 과학문화소양 및 핵심역량 성장에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Science Activity Program Operation on Science Culture Literacy and Core Competence Growth for Pre-Service Teacher)

  • 이 연구에서는 과학 체험 프로그램의 운영이 예비교사의 과학적 소양에 미치는 영향을 과학문화소양과 핵심역량을 중심으로 알아보았다. K대학교 255명의 예비교사가 참여하였으며, 과학문화소양은 단일집단 사전-사후검사 설계로 대응표본 t-검정을 통해 프로그램의 효과를 알아보았다. 핵심역량 성장 인식은 사후검사만 실시하였으며, ANOVA로 역량별 성장 인식의 차이를 비교하였다. 연구 결과, 과학 문화소양에서 예비교사의 과학문화소양은 사전검사에 비해 사후검사 평균이 더 높았으며, 이 차이는 통계적으로 유의미하였다(p<.05). 핵심역량의 성장 인식 분석 결과, 과학적 의사소통 능력에서 70.6%의 예비교사가 성장을 보고하였으며, LSD로 사후검증 결과 다른 핵심역량에 비해 통계적으로 유의미하게 높은 빈도를 보였다(p<.05). 이를 통해 예비교사의 과학적 소양 함양을 위한 방안으로 과학 체험 프로그램의 교육적 가치를 확인할 수 있었다.

COVID-19 상황의 학교급식에서 위기대응식에 대한 급식관리자의 인식 조사 (A Study on the Perception about Emergency Meal as School Meal Services among Nutrition Teachers in the COVID-19 Situation)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the perception of nutrition teachers about emergency meals in all schools affiliated with the Seoul Office of Education. The purpose of this study was to suggest the need for emergency meals and provide directions for future development, thereby assisting meal service sites. An online survey was conducted from May 26 to 31, 2021, analyzing 130 collected samples. The summary of the results is as follows: First, the nutrition teachers recognized the need for school meal services for the prevention of the spread of infectious diseases and considered the variance among school meal consumers. Also, they generally thought of emergency meals due to the need for social distancing and the decrease in the distribution of food. Secondly, in terms of the differences in the perception about emergency meals, nutrition teachers (45.4%) who have provided emergency meals (t=2.584, P<0.05) were more aware of the need for emergency meals than nutrition teachers (54.6%) who had not provided emergency meals. Nutrition teachers conceived emergency meals to minimize the contact between people (45.6%) and to rectify the imbalance in nutrition (37.5). Next, emergency meal attributes were observed to be ranked in the order of convenience (3.49), safety (3.15), and satisfaction (2.88). Fourthly, although there were no meaningful differences in emergency meal attributes, there were statistically significant differences in the safety of the cooking process, menu familiarity, the low unit price compared to regular meals and the excellent satisfaction with nutrition provided (t=2.603, P<0.05), (t=2.039, P<0.05), (t=2.154, P<0.05), (t=2.477, P<0.05) respectively.

환경 교수학습법에 대한 과학과와 사회과 교사들의 인식 (Perceptions of Korean Science and Social Science Teachers Regarding Teachers/Learning Methods for Environmental Education)

  • To meet the objectives of environmental education, teachers especially have to perceive the importance of environmental education, comprehend various characteristics of teaching/learning methods, and be able to conduct classes by choosing proper teaching/leaming methods in accordance with a specific purpose and educational focus about environmental education. Therefore, it Bs necessary to investigate the current status of Korean environmental education and provide teachers with appropriate environmental teaching/leaming methods. To this end this study aims to examine Korean science teachers'perceptions'on environmental education and the kind of teaching/learning methods which can be utilized in environmental education. Teachers who completed the survey were 135 science teachers from middle and high schools in Seoul, and 126 social science teachers from Kyoungki province. The majors of the science teachers were in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and earth science. Also, there was one teacher who majored in special education. For social science teachers two majors were common, geography and general sociology. After analysis of the data from the surveys the results are as follows. First, science and social science teachers in middle and high school recognized the necessity of environmental education in school education. Second, most teachers had applied environment related topics to their subject of study occasionally, but they mostly concurred that environment related contents should be included in their textbooks. Third, science teachers agreed that field trip, discussion, and the STS approach were the most proper methods for environmental education, and social science teachers agreed that field trips, inquiry, and discussion were the most appropriate methods for a teaching environment. They realized that they should decide good teaching-learning methods appropriate to the objectives and content needed for effective environmental education as they selected different teaching-learning methods according to detailed environmental objectives and contents in their textbooks.
