Mixed Method Study on Patients' Level and Experience of Anxiety before Undergoing Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (위내시경 검사 목적에 따른 검사 전 불안 정도와 불안 경험: 혼합연구방법의 적용)

  • Purpose: This mixed method study aimed to investigate patients' level of anxiety and their experience of this before undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Methods: A total of 125 patients answered a questionnaire assessing their pre-EGD level of anxiety, and a total of 17 patients participated in individual interviews regarding their experience of EGD-related anxiety. The SPSS Software program was used for survey data analysis and content analysis was used for qualitative data. Results: The mean anxiety score was 40.00±9.86 and the factors related to anxiety levels were being female (p<.001) and being a relatively young age (20-30 years old, p=.004). There were no significant differences shown in level of anxiety according to the purpose EGD was performed for: screening, diagnosis, or disease follow-up. In the qualitative analysis, however, patients who underwent a follow-up procedure as a result of stomach cancer exhibited more complicated feelings of anxiety and helplessness than others. For those who underwent EGD for diagnostic reasons, they worried about the test results and were concerned about possible life changes after diagnosis. Those for whom EGD was performed for screening purposes expressed concern only in the event of EGD complications. Conclusion: This study explored the nature of pre-EGD anxiety according to the purpose of the procedure. Nurses and doctors should be aware that patients undergoing EGD may have different levels and experiences of pre-procedure anxiety.

Characteristic of Trait Anxiety and Positive Psychological Factors in Patients with Depression and/or Anxiety Disorders (우울증 및 불안장애 환자에서 특성불안 차이에 따른 긍정심리요인의 특징)

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between trait anxiety and positive psychological factors. Methods : A total of 429 outpatients diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety disorders surveyed with questionnaires measuring socio-demographic, clinical, and positive psychological factors. The relationships of trait anxiety with clinical symptoms and positive psychological factors were evaluated. Results : Patients with low trait anxiety showed high optimism, gratitude, hope, spirituality and purpose in life. After adjusting age, scores of BDI and STAI-S, the results showed low trait anxiety was associated with high spirituality and purpose in life. Conclusion : The result revealed that trait anxiety had negative-relationship with spirituality and purpose in life in patients with depressive and/or anxiety disorders. Although trait anxiety was known as a general tendency which is stable, approach to trait anxiety by modulating these associated positive psychological factors would be newer approach of treatment to patients with depressive and/or anxiety disorders.

A Study on the Library Anxiety of Public Library Users (지역주민들의 도서관불안에 관한 연구)

  • This study was investigated and analyze the library anxiety of public library users utilize LAS. The main contents of this study contained the differences of library anxiety in sex, educational background, age categories, the frequency of library visit, the completion of information literacy program and library use instruction. Library anxiety is very differed according to the various factors, especially, the library anxiety of knowledge of library, barriers with staff was high, the average LAS score is 2.61, 2.60. Regard to results of this study, conclusion are suggested the recommendations for a decrease in library anxiety of public library users.

A Study on the Library Anxiety of Public Library Senior User (공공도서관 시니어 이용자의 도서관불안에 관한 연구)

  • This study measures library anxiety using K-LAS for senior users, who constitute the smallest part of a public library users group. According to the findings, the overall score of library anxiety was 2.95, which was higher than the score of university students and local residents measured in previous studies. It was analyzed that the anxiety score of 'Digital Information' factor was the highest. In addition, it was found that the anxiety score was high in the old age group and the low education level group. Senior users whose intention of visit was to attend a community class and frequency of visit was lower showed higher library anxiety. This study suggests a method to reduce library anxiety of senior users, based on the analysis findings.

Effects of Acculturative Stress and Emotional Control on Depression/Anxiety in Children from Multicultural Families: Mediating Effects of Social Support (문화적응스트레스 및 정서조절이 다문화가정 아동의 우울/불안에 미치는 영향 : 사회적 지지 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study examines the mediating effects of social support on 1) the relationships between acculturative stress and depression/anxiety and 2) the relationships between emotional control and depression/anxiety in children from multicultural families. Pearson's correlations between variables were analyzed, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify direct and indirect effects of acculturative stress, emotional control, and social support on children's depression/anxiety. The sample included a total of 199 primary school students in grades 3 to 6 who lived in the Gwangju or Chonnam regions of Korea. First, there were positive correlations between acculturative stress and depression/anxiety and negative correlations between emotional control and social support. Second, social support from both peers and teachers partially mediated the relationships between acculturative stress and depression/anxiety. Third, social support from peers fully mediated the relationships between emotional control and depression/anxiety, and that from teachers partially mediated these relationships. The results suggest that social support from peers and teachers may reduce depression/anxiety in multicultural children as a mediating variable.

Anxiety and Pain in Surgically Treated Breast Cancer Patients

  • The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of anxiety and pain in women with breast cancer. Patients who had been treated with modified radical mastectomy or breast conserving surgery were included. Data were gathered using the state-trait anxiety inventory and the visual analog scale. The pain levels and analgesic consumption of the patients were evaluated after surgery. The study sample consisted of 150 women. The mean age of the participants was $50.54{\pm}10.02$. Most of the patients (58%) received breast conserving surgery. The mean state anxiety score was $44.74{\pm}11.91$, and the mean trait anxiety score was $48.78{\pm}9.48$ before surgery. The mean pain level on the first day following surgery was $3.26{\pm}1.91$ and analgesic consumption was $2.98{\pm}1.08$. There was no correlation between patient pain and anxiety levels. There was very slightly positive correlation between trait anxiety and total analgesic consumption. Assessing the levels of anxiety in breast cancer patients before surgery may contribute to the determination of postoperative pain.

Anxiety in hospitalized patients with infectious diseases placed in isolation: a concept analysis (감염병 격리 입원환자의 불안: 개념분석)

  • Purpose: This study conducted a concept analysis to clarify the meaning of anxiety in hospitalized patients with infectious diseases who have been placed in isolation. Methods: This study used Walker and Avant's process of concept analysis. Results: Anxiety in hospitalized patients with infectious diseases who have been placed in isolation can be defined by the following attributes: 1) fear, 2) guilt, 3) isolation, 4) discrimination, 5) frustration, 6) shame, and 7) uncertainty. The antecedents of anxiety were as follows: 1) a lack of information about infectious diseases, 2) restrictions of movement, 3) blockage of the social support system, 4) helplessness, and 5) negative biases. The consequences of anxiety were 1) internalized stigma, 2) loss of confidence, 3) lack of social activities and avoidance, 4) insomnia, 5) poor quality of life. Conclusion: The definition and attributes of anxiety identified in this study can be applied to enhance the understanding of anxiety in hospitalized patients with infectious diseases who have been placed in isolation. Systematic suppose should also be provided to reduce anxiety in these patients.

The mediating effects of post-pandemic health promotion behaviors in the relationship between anxiety and quality of life in young adults in South Korea: a cross-sectional study

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the mediating effects of health promotion behavior (HPB) in the relationship between anxiety and quality of life (QoL) in young adults living in the post-pandemic era. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive online survey design was utilized. Data on anxiety, QoL, HPB, and demographic characteristics were collected from 213 adults aged 19-35 years in Korea via an online survey in January 2024. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and PROCESS MACRO 4.2 software. Results: Strong correlations were observed among anxiety, QoL, and post-pandemic HPB (PP-HPB) in young adults, and anxiety and PP-HPB were identified as significant predictors of QoL. The total effect of anxiety on QoL was significant (B = -1.40, bootstrapped SE = 0.10), with both the direct effect (B = -0.70, bootstrapped SE = 0.09) and the indirect effect (B = -0.70, bootstrapped SE = 0.11) being significant. This suggests that PP-HPB partially mediated the relationship between anxiety and QoL. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of strengthening HPB with consideration of life changes since the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic to improve QoL among young adults with anxiety.

Effects of Claustrophobia, Vital Signs on Psychological Anxiety of the Patients during MRI Examination(In Patient Safety Accident) (MRI 검사 시 환자의 심리적 불안감이 폐쇄공포 및 활력징후에 미치는 영향(환자안전사고에 있어서))

  • In this study, to find out the effect of psychological anxiety of the patients during MRI examination on the claustrophobia and vital signs, As for a study tool, to measure Anxiety Sensitivity Index(ASI), Kamsung Evaluation Index of Life Environmental Noise(KEI), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-IV) was used, and for vital signs, blood pressure and pulse rate were measured pre and post MRI examination. In conclusion, it was indicated that though the effect of the general characteristics, psychological anxiety, on noise sensitivity and claustrophobia was small, the psychological anxiety of the patients during MRI examination affected claustrophobia and vital signs.

Study on Teaching Anxiety and Efforts for Professional Development of Beginning Secondary Science Teachers (초임 중등 과학 교사의 수업 불안 실태 및 전문성 발달 노력에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate teaching anxiety and the professional development of beginning secondary science teachers. For this study, a survey was conducted among beginning science teachers (N=83) with under five years of experience, and in-depth interviews with these five teachers were carried out. The survey tackled beginning secondary science teachers' anxiety levels by asking about their difficulties in teaching science classes, and results showed that the teachers' levels of teaching anxiety marked high. Levels of teaching anxiety in physics among subjects and in chemistry among experiments marked highest. To overcome teaching anxiety, teachers searched for information on the Internet or received help from their colleagues and veteran teachers. They revealed that plans for professional development as science teachers included receiving in-service training and joining teacher communities. In addition, the best type of required training program for professional development appeared to be lectures about teaching know-how from veteran teachers.
