Patients' Anxiety in Intensive Care Units and Its Related Factors (중환자실 환자의 불안 정도와 불안에 영향하는 요인 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe patients' anxiety in the ICU and to investigate related factors on the anxiety level. Methods: An exploratory cross-sectional survey design was used. Forty-eight patients participated in the study. Questionnaires were asked to patients who had been cared in the ICUs. Results: Related to the anxiety level, the mean of the total anxiety score was 5.47, and 60% of the patients had moderate or severe level of anxiety. Patients from the coronary care unit had a significantly higher level of anxiety than those from surgical intensive care unit or pulmonary surgery care unit. Moreover, significantly different levels of anxiety were found among patients who had been stayed for 2, 3, or 4 days. Conclusion: Patients who were from the coronary care unit or had been stayed longer (up to 4 days) in the ICU were significantly associated with higher anxiety level.

Comparative Analysis of the Responses to Intruders with Anxiety-Related Behaviors of Mouse

  • Anxiety in mice can be measured by behavioral reactivity to social or non-social stressors. These behaviors were compared by performing the resident-intruder test (social) as well as the light-dark transition and open-field tests (non-social) for the FVB, C57BL/6, and BALB/c lines of mouse. The three inbred lines showed significant differences in their responses to intruder mice. Three factors, accounting for about 68% of the total variance, were extracted from the scores obtained from the three behavioral tests. The first two major factors are primarily associated with the anxiety-related behaviors. One includes anxiety behaviors with a locomotive basis, while the other includes defecation measured in both anxiety tests. The third factor explains the three social behaviors, facial investigation, ano-genital investigation, and following, observed in the resident intruder test, although facial investigation is also moderately associated with the second factor. The results indicate that the behavioral responses to an intruder share a component distinct from anxiety-related behaviors.

Efficacy of Forest-Thermal Combined Therapy for Anxiety and Stress among Smoking-Cessation Attempters

  • Purpose: Smoking is a way of coping with anxiety and stress. This study aimed to identify the effects of forest-thermal combined therapy on anxiety and depression in smokers who desire to quit smoking. Methods: Thirty participants were included in the study, 15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. Those in the experimental group participated in a three-day forest-thermal combined therapy program. The program includes forest walks, meditation and thermal therapy in the charcoal kiln. Results: Before and after the program, physiological indicators such as cortisol, heart rate variability, and serotonin anxiety level using the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI), and stress level using the psychosocial well-being index (PWI) were measured in both groups. The differences in STAI (p=.012) and PWI (p=.006) scores between the experimental and control groups were statistically significant. However, cortisol, heart rate variability, and serotonin were not significantly different between the two groups after the program. Conclusion: These results show that forest-thermal combination therapy effectively reduces anxiety and stress in smokers. It suggests that forest-thermal therapy can potentially increase smoking cessation rates.

The Influence of Educare Teachers' Science Education Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Science on Science Teaching Anxiety (보육교사의 과학교육지식 및 과학에 대한 태도가 과학교수 불안에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of educare teachers' science education knowledge and attitudes towards science on science teaching anxiety. 259 teachers of young children were recruited from 19 daycare centers and the data were analyzed through frequency, percentage, Pearson's correlations using PASW 18.0 and structure equation modeling using AMOS 7.0. The findings are as follows. First, educare teachers showed more than median scores in all science education knowledge, attitude towards science and science teaching anxiety. Second, in total 57% of the variance in teachers' science teaching anxiety was accounted for by teachers' science education knowledge and attitude towards science. This result implied that teachers' science education knowledge and attitude towards science should be improved in order to reduce teachers' science teaching anxiety.

Characteristics of Explanatory Hypothesis Formation by Anxiety Types in High School Students Cognitive Conflict about Action-Reaction Task (I) (작용 반작용 과제에서 고등학생의 인지갈등 불안유형에 따른 설명가설 형성의 특성(I))

  • Based on conceptual change theory, cognitive conflict is known as an important factor for conceptual change even though there are still questions about its positive and negative effects on science learning. However there are little research which propose types of meaningful(constructive) cognitive conflict in learning science. The purpose of this study is to find out how are the anxiety types of cognitive conflict to which high school students respond in the action-reaction task, and to reveal what's the characteristic of the explanatory hypothesis according to the anxiety types. The result of this study indicated that first, the characteristics of the anxiety types of the cognitive conflict were classified as eight types. Especially the students who belong to the types of conviction of logical misconception and reasonable modification suggested explanatory hypothesis close to physical nature. On the other hand, the students who showed other types of anxiety except the two types of anxiety suggested temporary supported hypothesis or simple explanatory hypothesis based on students' observation and intuition. Finally we discussed the importance and the implication of the types of anxiety in applying the cognitive conflict strategy to science instruction.

The Effects of the Small Group Collaborative Learning Strategy using Smart Devices in Elementary School Science Classes (초등 과학 수업에서 스마트 기기를 활용한 소집단 협력 학습의 효과)

  • In this study, the effects of the small group collaborative learning on students' achievement, the retention of the achievement, communication anxiety, and science learning motivation were investigated. The aptitude-treatment interaction between the level of students' self-directed learning ability and the intervention was also examined. Two classes (38 students) from an elementary school were respectively assigned to a control group and a treatment group. A self-directed learning ability test, a communication anxiety test, and a science learning motivation test were administered as pretests. The intervention lasted for 8 class periods. After instruction, an achievement test, the communication anxiety test, and the science learning motivation test were administered. An achievement retention test were also administered after four weeks. The results indicated that there were significant treatmentaptitude interaction effects in the achievement test scores and the achievement retention test scores. In the communication anxiety and the science learning motivation, however, any significant difference was not found between the scores of the treatment group and the control group. Educational implications are discussed.

Effects of the Provision of Information on Anxiety in Patients during Outpatient Surgery: A Systematic Review (정보제공이 외래 의식 하 수술, 시술 환자의 불안에 미치는 영향: 체계적 문헌고찰)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the research methods, contents, and effects of providing information to alleviate patients' anxiety during outpatient surgery. Methods: The PICOTS-SD (Participants, Interventions, Comparisons, Outcomes, Time, Setting, Study design) was used and 11 randomized controlled trials studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. For assessing the quality of the studies, the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used. Results: In the 11 selected studies, intervention methods included verbal, written paper, video, and websites, and the outcome variable was anxiety. Regarding the effectiveness of providing information on anxiety, the result of the present study was ambivalent. Conclusion: This study showed the current trends in providing information as an intervention. However, randomized controlled trials are further needed in Korea, to verify the effects of such an intervention on patients' anxiety.

The Effects of Premarital Adult Child's Perceived Self-Differentiation and Dynamics of Emotional System between Parent and Child on Trait Anxiety (미혼성인자녀가 지각하는 자아분화와 부모-자녀간 정서체계 역동성이 특성불안에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the direct and indirect effects of premarital adult child's perceived self-differentiation and parent-child dynamics of emotional system on trait anxiety. The subjects of the study numbered 277, and correlation and path analysis was used with SPSS 10.0. The major findings were as follows: 1. It was shown that self-differentiation, over involvement and perceived criticism of premarital adult children were correlated with trait anxiety. And, among demographic variables, education, income, and marital status of the subjects' parents were related with trait anxiety. 2. Parent-child differentiation, over involvement, perceived criticism, and sex had direct effects on premarital adult child's self-differentiation. The variables that had direct effects on trait anxiety, which was the final dependent variable were self-differentiation, parent-child differentiation, perceived criticism, and income while over involvement an indirect effect on it.

Effects of Types of Music in Music Therapy on Anxiety and Vital signs of Surgical Patients Undergoing Operation Using Spinal Anesthesia (음악요법 유형이 척추마취 수술환자의 수술 중 불안 및 활력징후에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine types of music (relax music or preferred music that patients have chosen) can effects on anxiety, blood pressure and pulse, and whether there are differences depending on the kinds of music in order to reduce anxiety of surgical patients using spinal anesthesia. Methods: This research's design is quasi-experimental design and non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest experimental design conducted on 60 surgical patients(experimental group 1=relax music therapy group, experimental group 2=preferred music therapy group, and group 3=control group) using spinal anesthesia. The Variables were trait anxiety, state anxiety, blood pressure, and pulse. Results: 1) In the state anxiety, there was a significant difference among the experimental groups 1, group 2 and the control group. 2) There was a significant difference in systolic blood pressure among the experimental group 1, group 2, and the control group. 3) In pulse, no significant difference among the experimental group 1, group 2 and the control group was detected. Conclusion: Regardless of the types of music, music therapy is thought to be effective nursing mediation to mitigate the state anxiety of surgical patients undergoing spinal anesthesia.

A Study on the Relationship Between Library Anxiety and Computer Attitude of College Students (대학생들의 도서관 불안과 컴퓨터 태도와의 상관관계 연구)

  • This study examines the relationship between library anxiety and computer attitude with references to the variations in the college students' gender, grade level, academic majors, frequency of library visits, and the perception towards mobile-phones in order to explore the possible measures for minimizing library anxiety amongst the students. The study results show the computer anxiety and the computer usefulness to be the computer attitudinal factors most closely correlated with the level of library anxiety. Our proposed solution is the development of a user training course and curriculum to lower students' computer anxiety while promoting greater computer usefulness.
