  • This paper examines theoretical trends and policy issues concerning science and public. The dominant perspective about it was changed from “popularization of science” to “public understanding of science (PUS)”. PUS pays attention to active roles of public in the understanding of science based on the contextual model. And recently various concepts are attempted to complement PUS such as “heterogeneous PUS”, “quantitative PUS”, “public understanding of research”, and “public participation in science”. PUS related activities in Korea can be analyzed using the concept of “science and technology culture system”. The characteristics of science and technology culture system in Korea can be summarized as follows: Its purpose is confined to support existing national innovation system; Its constituents have been unevenly and separately developed; Its material and institutional infrastructure is not sufficiently prepared; Its organizing mechanism is strongly influenced by government's execution power.

  • In emergency rescue situations, the localization accuracy of the rescue requestor is a very important factor in determining the success or failure of the rescue. Indoors where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is not operated, there is no choice but to use Wi-Fi or LTE signals. However, the performance of the current emergency rescue system utilizing those RF signals is exceedingly low. In this study, the effectiveness of the surface correlation technology using the accumulated signal pattern of RF signals was verified in relation to the emergency localization technology. To validate the proposed system, we configured and tested an emergency rescue scenario in multi-floors building. When the emergency rescue was requested, it was confirmed that the initial localization error was large owing to the short length of the accumulated signal pattern. However, the localization error decreased over time, which eventually led to the accurate location information being delivered to the rescuer.

  • This paper proposes an HDR display system using multi-projectors for presentation of HDR contents to multi-users. An HDR image is resolved by luminance and the resolved images are assigned to several projectors. The proposed system projects the HDR contents onto a large screen, and the system can display the HDR contents to multi-users. The proposed system realized to output the broad luminance by emitting the light of multi-projectors onto the same screen. In addition, tonal steps of the proposed system increase so that other projectors cover the tonal steps in the region where the dynamic range is expanded. In this paper, we indicate an effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • In the present work, a phase-field model was developed to investigate the influence of recrystallization on bubble evolution during irradiation. Considering the interaction between bubbles and grain boundary (GB), a set of modified Cahn-Hilliard and Allen-Cahn equations, with field variables and order parameters evolving in space and time, was used in this model. Both the kinetics of recrystallization characterized in experiments and point defects generated during cascade were incorporated in the model. The bubble evolution in recrystallized polycrystalline of U-Mo alloy was also investigated. The simulation results showed that GB with a large area fraction generated by recrystallization accelerates the formation and growth of bubbles. With the formation of new grains, gas atoms are swept and collected by GBs. The simulation results of bubble size and distribution are consistent with the experimental results.

  • A high-power Nb:glass laser system(Simmyung I) has been contructed and tested. In this system, we used a Nb:YLF laser as a master oscillator, a 4-pass amplifier for pre-amplification, 5 stages of rod amplifiers, and spatial filtering and image reaying usits. The system has demonstrated in excess of 80J(2TW) with 40 psec(FWHM) pulse duration. Output energy, gain and spatial were measured at each amplification stage. With this laser system a preliminary X-ray generation experiment was performed. Pinhole images, X-ray diode signals and X-ray speriment were obtained for the irradiated target of copper. Detailed descriptions of the system performance and the X-tay generation experiment are presented.

  • A motor group control system is developed for continuous manufacturing processes such as rolling process or electrolytic tinning process. The control system consists of four subsystems ; Multi-Function Controller (MFC), Flexible Motor Drive (FMD), Bulky Input/Output (BIO), Graphic Console and Simulator (GCS). A graphic control language, called Function Block Language, is used to configure the control algorithms for each subsystem. All subsystem are linked together thru a field bus to communicate data with each other.

  • For the pressurized water reactor two-step calculation, the traditional assembly homogenization and two-group neutron diffusion calculation have been widely used. When it comes to the core pin-by-pin simulation, many models and techniques are different and unsettled. In this paper, the homogenization methods based on the pin discontinuity factors and super homogenization factors are used to get the pin-cell homogenized parameters. The heterogeneous leakage model is applied to modify the infinite flux spectrum of the single assembly with reflective boundary condition and to determine the diffusion coefficients for the SP3 solver which is used in the core simulation. To reduce the environment effect of the single-assembly reflective boundary condition, the online method for the SPH factors updating is applied in this paper, and the functionalization of SPH factors based on the least-squares method will be pre-made alone with the table of the group constants. The fitting function will be used to update the thermal-group SPH factors with a whole-core pin-by-pin homogeneous solution online. The three-dimensional Watts Bar Nuclear Unit 1 (WBN1) problem was utilized to test the performance of pin-by-pin calculation. And numerical results have demonstrated that PWR pin-by-pin core calculation has more accurate results compared with the traditional assembly-homogenization scheme.
