The development of language skills among immigrants is important for their economic adjustment in their host societies since language is an important dimension of the skill levels of immigrants relevant for the labor markets of the host countries. Moreover, language plays a key role in the social adjustment of immigrants and in the social and political cohesion particularly in the society like the US that has diverse racial and ethnic groups. The main purposes of the present study are to analyze the determinants of English abilities of Korean and other Asian immigrants in the US. The present study utilizes the Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS, S, 5%) in the US. We adopted the ordered probit technique to analyze qualitative differences of English ability. The study found that English fluency increases with a longer duration in the US, the presence of children in the household, living in an area in which a smaller proportion speak ones mother tongue, a younger age at immigration, a higher level of schooling. However, there are marked variations in levels of English proficiency among Asian immigrants.

Recently in order to ensure future competitiveness in schooling a paradigm shift which focuses on key competency is demanded. In these circumstances, there are lots of researches on competency in other subjects. However, in informatics the number of researches relate to competency is lacking. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop competency model for teacher of informatics in high school. For achieving this purpose, we develop research methods and procedures, and conduct several researches such as Focus Group Interview and surveys. Overall research process of this study is as follows: First, we develop competencies of informatics teachers, which consist of 6 categories, 17 competencies, and 66 behavioral indexes as a draft. Second, we verify the content validity of the competencies through FGI, and revise the competencies into 5 categories, 11 competency-units, and 159 behavioral indexes. Third, we conduct a survey for verification of the revised content validity again to informatics teachers, professors and researches. As a result, the major findings of the survey reveal that the Conbarch's ${\alpha}$ of each competency-units is over .9, and that the appropriateness of all items is over 3.5. According to this result, we confirm our competency model for teacher of informatics in secondary education.
The purpose of Emergency Medical System(EMS) is what a patient returns to society with recovering mental tone in the shortest time as giving prompt and proper medical treatment to patient in emergency situation, and the Correctional Administration(CA) is purposed for the convict to return and settle down to society after release from prison in success as executing schooling, enlightenment activity, vocational training to convict who was quarantined from the society for the term of imprisonment. This study investigated two science teachers' practical knowledge shaped during their science classes which intend to realize social construction of scientific models. The teachers' practical knowledge was qualitatively examined in terms of five content categories defined by Elbaz through the reflection-in-action based on video data of their teaching as well as the reflection-on-action based on their narratives and interview data obtained after their classes. The results shows: 1) two science teachers implemented their practical knowledge on appropriate subject matter knowledge when they provided students with scaffoldings to support building scientific models during the classes. 2) The teachers' knowledge about science curriculum played important roles to change the purposes of the classes from the transmission of difficult science concepts to the construction of scientific model appropriate to learning goals. 3) The teachers' implementation of pedagogical knowledge changed toward supporting students' group activities and model generations aligned to the intention of social construction of scientific models. 4) The teachers' practical knowledge about their 'selves' showed that a teacher's perception and implementation of his/her roles of helper, guide, or facilitator are important for students to construct scientific models through group activities. 5) The two teachers' practical knowledge the milieu of schooling is realized by their modes of interactions with student groups during their classes. Two teachers acted like a co-player with his students or like a coach to students near a playground. We discussed domain-specific characteristics about scientific model construction.
The changes in media environments have impacted on the ways in which knowledges are formed and transmitted and therefore the relevance of the traditional school subjects have been increasingly questioned. In this context, the discourses of the reformation of the 21st century schooling have focused on convergence education and media literacy education. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the fact that the practices of transdisciplinary integrated curriculum focusing on digital media content are grown voluntarily in schools. This research is a case study of a convergence educational project that was initiated by a middle school teacher who designed and implemented a unique program of the transdisciplinary class of Korean focusing on reading webtoons with the linked program of a 'Book Club Activity' that was a part of 'Creative Experiential Activitites'. Based on the analysis of the documents, participatory observation of a main event and the interview with the teacher, this article discusses how the webtoon-focused convergence education project might have achieved meaningful connections between a subject-focused learning and a creative experiences-focused learning; between in and out of school learning spaces; between the real and imaginative worlds; and between the boundaries of the popular culture and the arts. The main finding of the research can be summarized as follows: Firstly, webtoon as the subject of the study can be an effective medium of transdisciplinary integrated curriculum. Secondly, the convergence project based on webtoons can create meaningful learning spaces in and out of school environments in terms of creating more learner-participatory learning culture as well as connecting students' everyday lives, popular arts and their learning about culture. Another important finding of this research is the rediscovery of the teacher's role in terms of mediating the voices of students as readers in the process of constructing and implementing the integrated curriculum.
1. Introduction Community medicine with the concept of comprehensive medical care and an ideal medical care delivery system not only for an individual or family but for the whole community has emerged. In April 1970, the Presbyterian Medical Center started a hospital based community health service project in order to improve the health of the people in rural areas. Prior to commencing a comprehensive medical care system, a family survey was needed. The major objective of this survey was to obtain information concerning the people and their environment so as to be able to plan and implement a comprehensive medical care program in Soyang-Myun. 2. Survey Method An interview using a family record form was carried out for each household. This family record form was designed to get information about demography, family planning, environmental sanitation and vital statistics. Prior to beginning, the members of the survey team were trained in interviewing techniques for three days. The team consisted of a public health nurse, four nurse-aides, a sanitarian and four health extension workers who are working in our project, The survey was carried out during the period November 1971 to March 1972. 3. This study aims to illustrate T. H. Huxley's life and activities as a pioneer of British school science education which have been relatively little known than other aspects of him (e.g. Darwin's Bulldog). Undoubtedly, Huxley was one of the great scientists of the Victorian era, but he was also an active reformer of scientific enterprises and school science education through his strong engagement in various governmental and non-governmental positions and through his talents of delivering speeches and of writing books. He joined as a member to various royal commissions (esp. Devonshire Commission), became a president of several important scientific societies (e.g. Royal Society, BAAS) and published many well known books (e.g. Science and Culture, Selected Essays). As a science educator, Huxley himself taught biology and physiology for thirty years and known as an excellent teacher, participated in several historical education reform activities (e.g. a member of Devonshire Commission and of London School Board), worked as a science teacher trainer and as a DSA science examiner for the improvement of the quality of science teaching, and wrote a number of textbooks (esp. Physiography, The Crayfish) for various levels of schooling including elementary and secondary, imprinted his new idea on science teaching. His great role as a pioneer of school science education followed by a more professional successor, Prof. H. E. Armstrong who was better equipped with a more theoretical framework on the activities of learning science.

We investigated the relationship between the attitudes and brand preference on the expression techniques of advertisement of underwears and actual buying. A total of 233 females living in Seoul and Taejon were surveyed to compare these points of five major underwear brands (Vivien, Ravora, Wacoal, Calvin Klein, Let'xes). The survey showed that the responders reacted more positively to the revolutionary advertising techniques of the Calvin Klein, and Let'xes than to the more conservative techniques of the Vivien, Ravora, and Wocoal. The most positive response was obtained from the Calvin klein's revolutionary techniques while the most negative response from the Ravora. The most preferred brand was the vivien, followed by the Calvin Klein, Wacoal, Ravora, and Let'xes. The degree of preference varied according to the demographic variables like age, schooling, income, occupation, and residential area. As for the motive of preference, the Calvin Klein ranked best in respect to shape, quality, advertisement, and comfortability. The price factor was best for the Ravora. The Let'xes ranked worst in all aspects. However, there was discrepancy between the attitudes on advertisement and the actual buying, this implying that the attitudes on advertisement did not seem to directly affect actual purchasing behavior.
Korea has successfully achieved a lowered fertility level owing to the strong population control policy and effective family planning program. Along with fertility decline and decreased number of children in family, average number of household members has decreased and nontraditional households such as one person household and households composed of unrelated individuals have prolifirated, even though the absolute number of them are found minimal in Korea. However in recent years several data and survey results suggest that one person households are gradually in the increasing trend. The study aimed at investigating the real state of one person households in Korea and next analyzing the proportional distribution of one person households by a few socioeconomic characteristics, thus providing basic for eatablishing far-singhted population and social welfare policy in the future. Korea has experienced high growth rate of economy through government-led development plans starting from the 1960s. During the past three decades, Korea has shifted from the agricultural state to the industrialized one. In compliance with the economic growth, urbanization and industrialization have brought about rural-to-urban migration and a great bulk of young population migrated to urban areas, who are seeking for educational and job opportunities. Korean society has also been under drastic change in every aspect of life involving norms, tradition, and attitude, etc. Therefore, in spite of the prejudice on 'living alone' still remaining, young people gradually leave parents and home, and further form nontraditional households in urban areas. Current increase in the number of one person households is partly attributable to the increase in high female educational attainment and female participation in economic activities. As the industrial structure in Korea changes from primary into secondary and tertiary industries, job opportunities for service/sales and manufacturing are opened to young female labor force in the process of industrialization. Contrary to the formation of one person households by young people, the aged single households are composed when children in family leave one by one because of marriage, education, employment. In particular, a higher proportion of aged female single households occur in rural areas due to the mortality difference by sex. Based on the data released form the 1990 Population and Housing Census and National Fertility and Family Health Survey in 1985 and 1991, the study tried to examine the state of one person households in Korea. According to Census data, the number of one person households increased to 1, 021, 000 in 1990, comprising 9.0 percent of total households. And the survey reveal that among total 11, 540 households, 8.0 percent, 923 households, are composed of one person households. Generally, the proportion of female single households is greater than that of male ones, and a big proportion of one person households is concentrated in the 25-34 age bracket in urban areas and 65 years and more in rural areas. It is shown than one person householders in urban areas have higher educational attainment with 59.2 percent high schooling and over in 1991, Job seeking proved to be the main reason for leaving home and forming one person households. The number of young female single households with higher education and economic self-reliance are found nil and the study did not allow to analyze the causal realtionship between female education and employment and one person household formation. However more research and deep analysis on the causal facors on one person household formation using statistical method are believed to be necessary.
