This study examined how much support families with pre-school children receive for child care along with the types of support they receive. The paper also investigated the factors that influence the financial and social support received from government, employers and grandparents of the children. Data for this study were obtained from a questionnaire completed by mothers of pre-school children (n=641) during the spring of 2009. The data were analyzed by the following methods: $\chi^2$, t-test, ANOVA, Logit analysis, and Tobit analysis using SPSS and STATA software. The profile of support for child care showed that approximately 33 percent of families with pre-school children received free or subsidized child care from the government, 12 percent received some forms of support for child care from the parents' employers, and 26 percent received support from grandparents either financially or in the form of free child care. The results of the Logit analysis demonstrated that families with pre-school children were more likely to receive child care subsides from the government when they had a higher number of pre-school children and a lower level of family income. The significant factors that influence support from employers were mother's educational level, the number of pre-school children, and family income. The significant factors that affect support from grandparents of the children were the mother's age, the mother's employment status, the type of residence, and the family type.
This study reviews the current status of Korean first graders, their experience with early care and education (ECE) programs, and their participation in private and after-school education. The research also examines how school adjustment during the first grade is related to family income, types of ECE programs, and participation in private and after-school education. Using the first year data of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2010, this study analyzes 752 first graders who attended only one of two types of ECE programs (child care centers or kindergartens), after which two 25% income extremes were examined. The analysis demonstrates that children from low-income households attended child care centers more often, while children from high-income households attended kindergartens more often. For both low-income and high-income groups, child care centers had a lower starting age and longer attendance periods than did kindergartens. High-income household children started attending ECE programs earlier, experienced more private and after-school education, and received a larger number of private and after-school educational lessons. For the second research purpose, children from low-income families showed better peer relations in school adjustment, while children attending child care centers showed better teacher relations than children attending kindergartens. Children with after-school education also exhibited better peer relations. These findings show the importance of government support for early learning, especially for low-income families and offer a foundation for developing private education polices for early childhood before and after school entry.
The purpose of this study was to verify preschool children can be classified of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) children across situation. It also was to examine differences among groups according to sex and age, and to investigate the family caracterisitcs of ADHD groups. The subjects of this study consisted of 228 preschool chilren (147 boys and 136 girls aged from 3- to 7- year-old) drawn from five Child Care Centers in Chung-Ju. Data were analyzed by the frequency, percentages, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient, ${\chi}^2$-test, F-test, Tukey post-hoc test, and Pearson correlation using SAS program. The results were as follows: 1. Preschool children could be classified by four diagnostic groups across situation; (1) 168 children (59%) of the control group (no disorder of ADHD), (2) 49 children (17%) of ADHD-Home group (ADHD only at home), (3) 43 children (15%) of ADHD-School group (ADHD only at school), and (4) 23 children (8%) of ADHD-PH group (ADHD both at home and at school). Ratings by parents and by teachers correlated very low with each other, as in previous studies. These results confirm the findings that ADHD be classified across situation. 2. There were significant differences among four groups according to sex and age. In the ADHD-PH groups, the boys is 3 times higher than the girls and the children aged 6- to 7-year-old was shown highly distributed in the pervasive ADHD.
This study explored the effect of fathers' childrearing participation and their recognition about child care situation on fathers' satisfaction with nonparental child care. The results of this study are as follows: First fathers who had finished college education whose family had more family income and whose wives had jobs were more participated in childrearing practice than fathers who had finished high school whose family had less family income and whose wives had no job, Second when childre's age were over 5 years fathers tended to recognize about child care situation. That is fathers whose children were over 5 years old more recognized about how caregivers took care for children's congnitive development and were more satisfied with educational materials of child care centers than fathers whose children were less 5 years old. Third fathers' recognition about child care situation were found to mediate the relationship between fathers' childrearing participation and fathers' satisfaction with nonparental child care.

Objectives: As a preliminary study on the prevalence of mental disorders in Korean children and adolescents, we investigated the diagnosis distribution of mental disorders in people under 19 years of age using the health insurance data. Methods: From the 2011 health insurance data of 1,375,842 people, the data of 286,465 people under 19 years old were extracted. Among them, we selected 10,778 with psychiatric diagnoses; male 6,453 (59.9%) and female 4,325 (40.1%). The frequency of psychiatric diagnoses in the males was 10,140 (62.7%) cases, which was significantly higher than that (6,031; 37.3%) in the females. We categorized the groups into 3 year intervals. Results: In the males under 3 years old, F80 was the most prevalent diagnosis, followed by F98. F90 and F41 were the most prevalent in the 4-15 and above 16 years old groups, respectively. In the females, F98 was the most prevalent in the children up to 3 years old, while F80 was the second most prevalent. In the 4-6 years of age group, F98 was the most prevalent, followed by F93. F90 and F41 were predominant in the 7-12 and above 12 years old groups, respectively. Conclusion: In the analysis of the frequency of diagnosis of mental disorders in the population under 19 years old, there were significant differences in the distribution based on age and gender.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate effective parental controls by age of child. The subjects participating in this study were 10, 12, 15, and 18-year-old school boys residing in Seoul. A total of 1,468 boys was used in the final analysis. Factor analysis and multiple regression of SPSS $PC^+$ were utilized to test the hypotheses. The findings of the analysis showed that the impact of various parental controls on antisocial behavior varied with developmental stages of the children. Younger boys were more susceptible to direct controls, while indirect controls proved more effective for older youngsters.
Objective: The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of school-age children's ego strength, failure tolerance, and performance anxiety on their school class adjustment, and to model the relation structure of the variables. Method: For these purposes, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 562 6th graders. Results and Conclusion: The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, ego strength, failure tolerance, and performance anxiety were significantly different according to gender. Second, in male students, ego strength, failure tolerance, and performance anxiety had a significant direct effect on school class adjustment. In addition, ego strength and failure tolerance had a significant indirect effect on school class adjustment. Third, female students' paths to school class adjustment were similar to male students' but the effect of failure tolerance on performance anxiety and the effect of performance anxiety on school class adjustment were not significant. Fourth, in the results of multi-group analysis, the effect path from ego strength to school class adjustment was different between male and female students, and the effect was higher in female students than in male students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a school adaptation program (SAP) for school-age children with emotional and behavioral problems who attended public elementary schools. Methods: SAP, developed by the authors, addresses school adaptation and academic efficacy and consists of 10 sessions based on five categories (i.e., school life, classroom activity, relationship with friends, relationship with teacher, and school environment). Sixteen children with emotional and behavior problems answered questionnaires before and after participation in the program. Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between pre and post-test on school adaptation (t=-2.78, p=.015) and academic efficacy (t=-4.62, p<.001) after the 10 sessions of SAP. Conclusion: The results indicate that SAP can could serve as a practical program for school nurses and teachers. Further studies based on SAP in various school settings are recommended.

The cognition of Korean kinship names was examined in children in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 9th grades (N=188) of public school. The task consisted of 43 items which identified the relative relationships of cognates and cognates-in-law. It was found that the main effects of age and residential area on cognition scores were significant and the interaction effects between the variables were also significant. As expected, older children performed the task more precisely than the younger children and children in Seoul performed better than in outlying regions. Under 15 years of age, the scores in Seoul were higher than in Andong, but at the age of l5, this trend was reversed. The gap between residential areas under 15 years of age could be explained by differences in cognitive ability and test effects, but the gap at 15 by culture.
