Subjects of this study on reading motivation were 300 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade elementary school children. Instruments were the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (Wigfield and Guthrie 1997; Kwun, 2002) and a School Reading Environment questionnaire developed by the researcher. Results showed that (1) the school reading environment (SRE) of 2nd graders was better than the SRE of 4th and 6th graders. (2) The reading motivation (RM) of 2nd graders was higher than the RM of 4th graders on external purposes; the RM of 4th graders was higher than 6th graders on self-efficacy and social interaction. (3) RM correlated positively with all aspects of SRE. (4) RM was affected by grade in school followed by school library environment and classroom library environment.

The tool used in this survey was a questionaire designed specially by the investigator. The questionaire was distributed to 1339 children selected at the descretion of the investigator with due consideration of sex, area(large city, medium city and rural community) and grade (from 2nd grade of primary school to 2nd year of middle school). The results of this study are summerized as follows : 1) Regional difference was observed in respect of the followiug : Awareness on reading, motivation for reading, reading method, activity after reading, number of books collected, reading guidance, how to obtain books to read, monthly reading volume, and reading tendency. 2) Also difference by grade was observed in respcet of the following ; Activity after reading, reading guidance, monthly reading volume and reading tendency. The following conclusions have been made based on the results of the survey: 1) The children's attitude toward reading and reading method may be considered favorable while reading environment is not satisfactory yet. Especially, reading environment of school children in medium cities and rural communities is worse than that of large cities. 2) No difference by sex was observed in respect of attitudes toward reading, reading method, reading environment and reading volume while difference by sex was observed in respect of reading tendency. The followings are recommended based on the results of survey: 1) To establish and carry out a comprehensive program for the improvement of reading environment of the school children in medium cities and rural communities. 2) To improve and substantiate school library facilities and design a proper guidance program to have children utilize school library to the maximum extent. 3) To contemplate on the consolidated measures for reading behavior survey.
The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a parent-child reading interaction program. Based on the importance of the parent-child relationship and the home literacy environment vis-a-vis the extent to which reading is encouraged, and with regard to the existing empirical research in this field, a five-session parent-child reading interaction program has been developed, targeting 18 parents with children enrolled in th lower grades of elementary school. The effectiveness of this program has been evaluated by a pretest and post test and then analyzed by a paired t-test. The findings are as follows: 1) Following the implementation of this program, there were improvements in scores related to the home literacy environment, the encouragement of reading, and the attitude of the child toward reading. 2) In addition, there was an increase in the level of the mother's "rational guidance" parenting while tendencies toward overprotective and hostile parenting traits declined. The importance of the parent-child relationship and home literacy environment concerning reading guidance was discussed.

Despite the close relatedness of the factors for reading motivation and book selection, few researchers have examined these factors together in a single study. To deal with this dearth of research, this study was designed to explore factors of motivation for reading and book selection of high school students comprehensively. The authors conducted in-depth interviews with fifteen high school students and analyzed their responses in order to identify the meaningful factors. The findings of this study reveal the five major factors: (1) characteristics of information sources, (2) school and learning environment, (3) individual factors, (4) home environment, and (5) social environment. In particular, the five types of factors seem to have a combined effects on reading motivation and book selection. The findings also suggest that one's reading motivation is a prerequisite for his/her book selection; however, the reading motivation does not always lead to book selection. The results of this study may deepen our understanding of reading behavior of high school students, which can be used in reading instruction and designing new programs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze how reading activities related to the environment of third grade students at elementary schools affect their attitude on the environment. A survey was carried out on 73 third grade students in K elementary school located in Buk-gu, Daegu metropolitan city. The students were divided into an experimental group and a control group. A preliminary inspection with a check paper on environment -related attitude was performed. Then the students in the experimental group performed a reading activity connected with the environment for eight weeks, and a comparative analysis of the results of posttest was conducted. As a result of the study, the posttest of the experimental group in its overall attitude toward the environment and change in attitude by areas, subjects, gender, showed high statistical significance. In terms of effects by areas, each of the three areas progressed evenly as a whole, although emotion showed the most improvement among them. In consequence of the effect by subjects, all subjects improved positively, although the environmental pollution and recycling parts showed the biggest change. Therefore, elementary third graders' reading activities related to the environment was more likely to change their attitude toward the environment to a more desirable direction. Hence, when the proper data for this activity is put into environment-related classes according to the aim of a lesson, it seems that students' attitude toward environment can be improved and moved into a desirable direction. Moreover, hopefully their environmental consciousness and practical inclination will grow when it is sustained even in ordinary times.

The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of school library personnel on students' reading behaviors and to identify differences between schools on it. For this purpose, this study surveyed 5,349 elementary, middle and high school students from 154 schools across Korea, and conducted a survey on reading environment, school library, and DLS. The results of the analysis showed that the students at the school where teacher librarians works are more likely to read books, participate in various reading programs, receive more help from teacher librarians in selecting books to read, lending more books, have more experience with DLS and satisfaction with it. The differences between the schools were in the order of 'classes which school library personnel took part in,' 'number of borrowed books,' 'help in selecting books,' 'average reading time per day,' 'number of home books,' 'reading in school library.' Therefore, it is necessary to expand the placement of school library personnel and develop their professionalism in order to prevent inequality in the educational environment between schools.
For this study of the writing performance of verbally gifted elementary and middle school students and its relations to home literary environment, reading attitude, perceived verbal ability, and preference for verbal expression, a sample of 101 verbally gifted children was recruited from classes in a gifted education institute in P metropolitan area. Results of path analyses show that verbally gifted children's home literary environment affects reading attitude and perceived verbal ability; reading attitude and perceived verbal ability affects preference for verbal expression; and preference for verbal expression directly affects writing performance. Results imply that the indirect relations of home literary environment to verbally gifted children's writing performance are an important foundation for developing preference for verbal expression and writing skills.
