Effects on the school dental clinic operation for children's oral health (학교구강보건실 운영이 아동의 구강건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Objetives : It tries to grasp whether the knowledge and attitude about the oral health of the school dental clinic operation school and non-operation school with 6 grade children in Daejeon Metropolitan City and the school dental clinic operation reaches any influence to the oral health of the child or not. Methods : The self-administered survey was performed for the school dental clinic operation group (201 people) and non-operation group (207 people) child 408 people from October 5th in 2009 until October 31st. By using the spss statistical program(VER 15.0), the statistical analysis performed the chi-square verification and t-test. Results : 1. The knowledge degree about the oral health according to the oral health education is the health education experienced group $22.34{\pm}3.36$ and non-experienced group $20.32{\pm}3.49$ (p=0.000), and the attitude showed the health education experienced group $15.06{\pm}2.99$ and non-experienced group $13.30{\pm}3.20$, oral health education experienced group significantly higher in the knowledge and the attitude, there was statistically significant difference(p=0.000). 2. The knowledge degree about the oral health according to the school dental clinic operation is school dental clinic group $22.84{\pm}2.92$ and non-school dental clinic group $20.83{\pm}3.73$ (p=0.000), and attitude showed high the school dental clinic group as the school dental clinic group $15.48{\pm}2.75$ and non-school dental clinic group $13.76{\pm}3.26$, there was statistically significant difference (p=0.000). Conclusions : The knowledge degree and attitude about the oral health showed high in oral health education experience group and the school dental clinic group when looking at the result described in the above. It thinks that the school dental clinic group has to be expanded for the oral health promotion of the children.

  • This study is to analyze factors affecting the school nurse's activities. The survey was undertaken during Sept. 1-Nov. 30, 1986.   • The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the school health teachers' self-confidence. This study was conducted with 87 school health teachers working in Jeonbuk province, from September to December, 1986, The results are follows; 1. Demographic characteristics of school health teachers 1) Age mean ; 34, range; 23-54 2) School Nursing experience mean; 11 years, range; 0-24 3) Clinical experience mean; 1.5 years, range: 0-13 2. Status of school health resources & nursing activities 1) Personnel resource school health teacher: pupils : 1 : 1,436 'classes=1:31 'general teacher=1:39 2) Budget Total school operating budget: School health budget : 100 : 4.2 (52.2 thousand Won) Half of the school health budget expend on medicine. 3) Clinic 80% of all schools have health clinic seperately. 71.32 of all schools have less than $35m^2$, 23.9%, $36-66m^2$. 4) Only 20% of all schools have organization for health 5) Average of clinic visitor for 1 year; 2,084 Major problem is on digestive system. Comparison of oral health status of school children utilizing school toothbrushing facility or school dental clinic (양치교실과 학교구강보건실 이용 학생들의 구강보건 실태 비교)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for the development of oral health education program and to make schoolchildren practice the right oral health care behaviors. Methods : Data were collected from 259 elementary school students including 134 boys and 125 girls in Busan from November 26 to December 20, 2012. The groups were tooth brushing group and dental clinic group. All statistical analyses were analyzed by frequency analysis and chi-square test using SPSS 18.0 program. Results : School dental clinic group showed higher awareness level of fluoride and sealant effect of prevention(p=0.000). Toothbrushing facility group showed higher awareness level of brushing tooth(p=0.011). School dental clinic group showed higher awareness level of fluoride toothpaste(p=0.000). Both school dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group showed higher awareness level of oral health education(p=0.001). School dental clinic group showed higher awareness level for tooth brushing method after education(p=0.000). Both school dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group showed higher level of education. Conclusions : School dental clinic group showed higher level for oral health knowledge and toothbushing facility group showed high level for oral health behavior. Both School dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group showed higher level of oral health education and tooth brushing method after education. Both school dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group proved to promote oral health. Activation of school toothbrushing facility is very important to change the oral health workforce.

Health Promotion Services and Administrative System of the University Health Clinic (대학보건실의 운영체계 및 건강증진 서비스 제공 실태)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze problems and priority of university health services through analysis of health promotion programs and administrative system of university health clinics. Methods: In first telephone survey, 349 colleges and universities nationwide were surveyed to find out whether they operate health clinic or not. The administrative system and health promotion services of university health clinics were analyzed in 198 schools which had health clinic in it. Results: 160 schools were included in the final analysis. The most common name of university health clinic was 'health clinic' (35.2%), and heads of 52 university health clinics were non-medical school professors. 20.9% of the school provided details of the rules and implement guidelines of health care service. Health promotion services of university health clinic were set the non-smoking area (90.6%), health counseling (81.8%), providing health information (74.8%), health check-up (65.4%), health education (61.4%), partnership with health institutions in a community (61.4%), and immunization (48.1%) in order of that. Conclusion: It is urgent to establish the regulatory and guidelines for university health clinic. Each member of school should have interests in their health clinic and acknowledge health promotion services which they can get at the university health clinic.

Opinion of dental hygienists toward school dental clinic operation (학교구강보건실 운영에 대한 담당치과위생사의 견해)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the opinion of dental hygienists toward school dental clinic operation. Methods: The study was carried out by telephone or e-mail to the dental hygienists in 415 elementary school dental clinics from September 1 to 30, 2014. The questionnaires were collected from 208 school dental clinics. Except incomplete answers, 148 data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. The self-reported questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(7 items), operation of school dental clinic(5 items), obstacle to school dental clinic(10 items), and effective operation of school dental clinic(5 items). Results: The school dental clinic operation accounted for 68.7% and 90.6% of the respondents answered that it was very effective for the oral health improvement. The dental hygienists answered that the clinic operation was very effective in oral disease prevention(37.1%), oral health knowledge and behavior(32.8%), oral health behavior habit(29.3%), and oral health improvement(0.9%). The change of the current operation into full time employee accounted for 79.7% and only 16.1% agreed to current operation of clinic visit by the community health center. The results showed that need for dentist was 3.69 by Likert 5 point scale. Conclusions: The oral health policy must be established to develop and implement the oral health programs for the school clinics.

Comparison of the Oral Health Awareness of Students in Schools with and without Dental Clinic in the City of Gwacheon (과천시 학교구강보건실 운영 및 비운영학교 학생의 구강보건의식에 관한 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of the oral health knowledge, attitude and awareness of students in schools equipped with and without a dental clinic in the city of Gwacheon. The subjects in this study were 782 students in that area. Out of them, 398 students attended a school furnished with a dental clinic, and 384 attended another school that wasn't equipped with a dental clinic. It's ultimately meant in this study to contribute to boosting the managerial efficiency of a school dental clinic and stepping up the development of quality oral health programs. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. When the students from the two schools were compared in terms of oral health knowledge, there wasn't any significant gap between the two groups in general. One difference was that the students from the school furnished with a dental clinic were more aware of presentive treatment provided by a dental clinic than the others from the other school. 2. As for attitude to oral health, there was no significant difference between the two in every regard except daily mean frequency of having a snack. 3. Regarding oral health belief, the students from the school equipped with a dental clinic had a better oral health belief in every aspect including health status, importance of oral health and interest than the others, and the difference between the two was significant. 4. Concerning perception of school dental clinic, the students from the school furnished with a dental clinic were better cognizant of it. As to the necessity of it, both groups viewed it as necessary for the prevention and treatment of dental caries. In terms of preference for school dental clinic, the students from the school furnished with a dental clinic had a greater preference for that.

Comparison of oral health knowledge and behavior in the teachers with or without the school dental clinic (학교구강보건실 운영학교와 비운영학교 교사의 구강보건지식과 구강건강행태)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the oral health knowledge and behavior in teachers with or without the school dental clinic. Methods : The subjects were 133 teachers with or without the school dental clinic in Gunsan. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the teachers from September 9 to November 2, 2013. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 21.0. Results : The groups were divided into two. Experimental group was school dental clinic operation group and the control group was no operation group. The experiment group showed the high score of recognition of fluoridation and sealant(p<0.01). The control group showed the high score of recognition of sealant(p<0.01). Conclusions : Continuous operation of the school dental clinic is essential to promote the lifelong oral health care in the elementary school children and the teachers. So the nationwide expansion of the continuous school dental clinic is very important to prevent the dental caries in the elementary school children.

Comparison of Oral Health Knowledge and Behavior in Students in Schools with and without a School Dental Clinic (학교구강보건실 유무에 따른 초등학생의 구강보건지식과 구강보건행동 비교연구)

  • This study analyzed and compared the oral health care knowledge, oral health behaviors and oral health status of elementary school students in schools with a dental clinic and those without. This study was carried out in November of 2012. The subjects were 188 elementary school students. Structured questionnaires were completed and the SPSS(Ver.17.0) Program was used for the collected data to perform frequency analysis, a t-test, and ANOVA. For oral health knowledge, the operating school dental clinic (OSD) group had a high score of 6.72 points, while the non-operating school dental clinic (NSD) group had 5.95 points. The results were statistically significant(p<0.01). For oral health behavior, the OSD group had a high score of 5.55 points, while the NSD group had 4.59 points, which was statistically significant(p<0.01). Students in schools with school dental clinics have much better knowledge and behavior about oral health than students without school dental clinics.

The recognition on toothbrushing facilities and job status of facility workers in school dental clinic (학교구강보건실 담당자의 업무 실태 및 양치시설에 대한 의견 조사)

  • Objectives : This study aims to analyze the tasks, recognition and obstacles in operation of school dental clinics and to examine opinions on installation, operation and prerequisites for toothbrushing facilities. Methods : It conducted a survey t o the persons in charge at 378 school dental clinics in Korea and total 127 sheets, excluding incompletely answered data, were used for analysis by using SPSS 18.0. Results : Two regular dental hygienists visit school dental clinics 2-3 times per week and work 4-6 hours per week on average. Their tasks include oral health education, toothbrushing instruction, oral examination, sending school newsletters, and dental sealants. The obstacles of operation include excessive workload other than the work for the school dental clinic, lack of dentists, and lack of cooperation of principals and teachers in school. The persons in charge think that the chief task of the school dental clinic is the continuous oral health management, and it effectively affects students' oral health improvement. Most of them were for the installation of toothbrushing facilities. They said that it will be effective in students having an adequate toothbrushing habit and their toothbrushing rate increasing higher. They thought that if the school dental clinic is changed to toothbrushing facilities, it will improve students' oral health management. The prerequisites for toothbrushing facilities are the support of manpower in charge, principal's support, and development of operational programs. Conclusions : The most effective function of school dental clinics is constant oral health management. However, when public health doctors are reduced and dental sealants get included in health insurance, the budget of local government will decrease and then it will eventually reduce the work of school dental clinics. Therefore, it is needed to enhance support for school dental clinics or install a toothbrushing facilities rather than a school dental clinic.
