With millions of people across the globe suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD), an objective, confirmatory test for the same is yet to be developed. This research aims to develop a system which can assist the doctor in objectively saying whether the patient is normal or under risk of PD. The proposed work combines the eye-hand co-ordination behaviour with the DaTscan images in order to determine the risk of this disorder. Initially, eye-hand coordination level of the patient is assessed through a hardware module. Then, the DaTscan image is analysed and used to extract certain geometrical parameters which shall indicate the presence of PD. These parameters are then finally fed into a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network using Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) Back propagation training algorithm. Experimental results indicate that the proposed system exhibits an accuracy of around 93%.
The purpose of this study is to examine the concept and importance of the hidden curriculum, which has an influence on the learning, culture, and identity formation of medical students, and to examine the student culture related to the hidden curriculum. The hidden curriculum can be defined from various perspectives. However, these definitions commonly include the concept of the whole experience students gain from school life in implicit ways, even though the school does not intend it. The hidden curriculum is related to non-cognitive areas and the culture formation of students in various way, including positive and negative content, and is important since once this curriculum is formed, it has a long-term impact. Therefore, it is necessary to consider not only the formal curriculum but also the hidden curriculum in order to apprehend the overall educational outcome of medical school. For this purpose, schools need to not only support studies on the hidden curriculum but also to endeavor to provide faculty and staff with educational and administrative support so that they can understand the hidden curriculum and be equipped as a role model. Furthermore, medical students need to endeavor to form a positive student culture in order to establish an appropriate identity as a doctor in the future.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the Korean medicine doctor's perception of the extension and activation of herbal medicine preparations insurance benefits. Methods : The sample of Korean medicine doctors' panel pool which is extracted by examining the square root quota of city location of Korean medicine clinics was used. In case of a vacancy in some participants, the number of Korean medicine doctors were supplemented and placed for investigation. Results : It has 54.0% awareness of the separation of prescribing and dispensing herbal preparations, 87.0% agreed on the need to be insured, but the separation as a necessary condition for being insured was only 60.3% agreed. When a large number of herbal preparations are being insured, it was expected that 30% to 50% of patients(30.3%) will be prescribed herbal preparations and the number of new patients will increase by 5 to 15 for the purpose of prescriptions only(49.3%). Increase amount of medical expense(?3,000) as a result of the separation of prescribing and dispensing herbal preparations are insufficient(54.3%). Conclusions : From the results of this study, extension of national health insurance to cover herbal preparations must be needed to activate herbal medicine preparations and improve Korean medical services.

This study is a study on the applicability of the medical humanities curriculum through a narrative study on international treatment of foreign patients. Korea's medical system and standards are world-class, and it can be seen that the knowledge and skills for patient care are sufficient, which shows that the competence for patient care emphasized by Korean doctors is sufficient. In terms of social responsibility for doctors in Korea, the importance of volunteering is learned from medical school education, and through medical field experiences in various cultures, it can be seen that volunteering is important to lead to lifelong work as a doctor. In the field of professionalism, professionalism could be expressed as a doctor, and in all processes, the medical staff understood and empathized with the pain of the patient, and it was found that the sincerity was conveyed to the patient. Professionalism is an area that is being emphasized more recently, and it is necessary to provide educational opportunities for professionalism to doctors as well as medical school education. This international medical experience can be applied to the medical humanities curriculum of the medical school, and a harmonized and integrated medical humanities curriculum can be operated throughout the six-year curriculum.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the nurse's image and role projected in media and perceived by elementary, middle and high school students. Methods: Data were collected from 544 students in J city, Korea during December 2010 to February 2011. The nurse's image was measured by the instrument developed by Yang (1998). Nursing experiences and nurse's role in media was measured by self-administered questionnaires with 8 questions. Statistical analysis was made with t-test and ANOVA using SPSS win 18.0. Result: The score on personal image was the highest, while the score on social image was the lowest. Elementary school students reported a positive image compared with middle and high school students. Male students had a more positive image than female students. Of various media, students had more experiences related to nurses from TV rather than internet sites, books and newspaper/magazines. Especially, the nurse's role on TV 'seemed to be an assistant of a doctor' was rated the highest by the students. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a strategy to improve the social image of the nurse through TV by providing correct information on the nurse's role. For this purpose, it is required to consistently monitor and analyze the nurse's role shown in media.

Heart sounds generated by the beating heart and blood flow reflect the turbulence created when the heart valves snap shut. Cardiac diagnosis is typically started by an auscultation using a stethoscope, from which a medical doctor, depending on his hearing capabilities and training, listens and interprets the acoustic signal. This method of diagnostic is uncertain, mostly due to the fact that human ear loses the acoustic frequency sensitivity through the years. Even though an auscultation has some weaknesses like uncertainty, it is considered as a primary tool due to its simplicity. In this paper, heart murmur detection algorithm is proposed using time and frequency characteristics of heart sound. The propose heart murmur detection method adapted conventional primary heart sound detection method in time domain and modified spectral flatness method in frequency domain for detecting heart murmurs. From experimental results, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm detect the heart murmurs efficiently.
Purpose: Given the importance of sun protection in the prevention of skin cancer, this study was designed to determine predictors of sun-protective practices among a sample of Iranian female college students based on protection motivation theory (PMT) variables. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 201 female college students in Iran University of Medical Sciences were selected. Demographic and PMT variables were assessed with a 67-item questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was used to identify demographic and PMT variables that were associated with sun-protective practices and intention. Results: one percent of participants always wore a hat with a brim, 3.5% gloves and 15.9% sunglasses while outdoors. Only 10.9% regularly had their skin checked by a doctor. Perceived rewards, response efficacy, fear, self-efficacy and marital status were the five variables which could predict 39% variance of participants intention to perform sun-protective practices. Also, intention and response cost explained 31% of the variance of sun-protective practices. Conclusions: These predictive variables may be used to develop theory-based education interventions to prevent skin cancer among college students.
This study interprets the records of Bianque (醫案) as a medicine practice rather than a simple legend or story, and analyzes its effect on the development of oriental medicine. It also compares aspects of the Bianque related to patient treatment as described in 『韓非子』, 『韓詩外傳』, 『史記』, and reinterpreted using other contemporary literature. The clairvoyant power of 『史記』 「扁鵲傳」 was created by Sama-Cheon(司馬遷) exaggerating the pulse diagnosis with clairvoyance. The contents of the treatment of Sogan-Ja(趙簡子)'s confusion affairs in the first agenda, show that Bianque master the pulse diagnosis. The contents of the treatment of Kwek-Seja(虢世子)'s disease in the second agenda is a record of knowledge of acupuncture using acupuncture points. The content of refusal of treatment in the third agenda, 腠理, 肌膚, 腸胃, 骨髓 and the progression of the disease and the corresponding treatment of 湯熨, 鍼石, 火齊 are specified in detail. From the content of Bianque, he was not a martial art, but a doctor who practiced medicine, and contributed to the development of the pulse diagnosis.
Background : One-quarter of Koreans are either students or school employeeS. Therefore, school health programs for them have high levels of cost-benefit. School health programs, though, are focused on services such as vaccination and physical examination according to administrational regulations without systemic planning. Futhermore, college health programs run autonomously, not under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. It is my intention to analyse the current status of college school health service centers and use the basic data so generated to model how they might operate at an optimal level of efficiency. Methods : I intended to investigate all 29 colleges in Seoul except some specialized colleges such as theological schools in the two-month period of August and September, 1999. I used the telephone interview method to ask questions relating to personal composition, medical equipment in use, annual expenditure and the provision of school health services. School health services were composed of three items; health servies, health education and a healthy school environment. Results : 27 college health service centers were surveyed. The median number of medical personal in each center was 2, the range was 1-31. 7 centers(25.9%) have only nurses with no doctors. Annual expenditures of 11 centers(50.1%) was less than 10 million won, 19 center(70.4%) were maintained by support from their college. Thirteen centers(48.1%) provided doctor's examinations, 6 centers(22.2%) provided dental care services, laboratory services were provided by seven centers(25.9%). Some 81.5% of the centers had vaccination programs and 44.5% had health education programs. There was no school environment program except insecticide provisions. College health service centers with school doctors differed from centers without school doctors in terms of medical equipment range, annual expenditures and annual case loads. Conclusion : The structure and function of college health service centers in Seoul are diverse. However, no center has a well-organized school health plan.
The Supreme Court en banc decision on December 12, 2022 (docket number 2016Do21314) ruled that the diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia by an oriental medical doctor using a diagnostic ultrasound device was not an unlicensed medical practice for an oriental medical doctor, which shall be scrutinized by the article 27 (1) of the Korean Medical Service Act. This ruling did not determine that a specific medical practice, especially diagnosis, based on the radiology, which is a part of western medicine, was not an unlicensed medical practice for an oriental medical doctor. Rather, it intended to clarify that the prosecutor should specify and prove the way of diagnosis and he should not prosecute mere the use of a diagnostic ultrasound device itself. To that extent, the ruling is agreeable because, as the oriental medicine community has argued, there is no regulation prohibiting the use of certain devices. It is probable, however, that the way of diagnosis established in radiology, which is a part of western medicine, was actually used in the case. In that case, there is undeniably an unlicensed medical practice for an oriental medical doctor. While many of the cases where the demarcation between (western) medicine and oriental medicine have been problematized thus far have been experimental treatment in nature, the above practice of using ultrasound appears to be frequently done in many oriental clinics, and so it is necessary to cope with the possibility of a disguised unlicensed medical practice. Another problem is the prevention of unfair practice or the protection of medical consumers. In fact, many oriental medical clinics' practice appear to have a tendency of inducing medical consumers' misunderstanding that a diagnosis based on radiology, which is a part of western medicine, were provided. It is hard to respond to this problem with demarcation between (western) medicine and oriental medicine. A new regulation against unfair practice might be necessary to implement.
