  • Owing to generalization of design competitions since 1990s, various design methods was tried in elementary middle high school design competitions. Therefore, to analyze design characteristics of elementary middle high school is very meaningful. In this context, this study is the most important purpose for analyzing layout plans and their trends in prizewinners of elementary middle high school design competitions and for furnishing basic datum for next school design. The result of this study is following : (1) The layout patterns of school buildings are classified into 12 types. (2) Entrance design is divided into 6 types(structure, column and wall, open, half structure, general, and mixed type). (3) Square design is grouped into 7 types. (4) Pedestrian mall is sorted out 6 types(straight lineal, curve, curve and square, straight lineal and curve, and straight lineal and curve and square type). (5) Entrance types of vehicle and pedestrian are classified into 4 types(parallel, ㅡ separation, ㄱ separation, and opposite separation type) Analysis shows that the best applying for layout patterns of school buildings is ㄷ type and ㅌ type, for entrance design is structure type, for square design is ${\square}$ type and ${\bigcirc}$ type, for pedestrian mall is straight lineal and square type, and for entrance types of vehicle and pedestrian is parallel type.

  • This research is intended to establish the design method for Keum Jeong Elementary School. Establishing the design method is based on the participatory method of Davidson Elementary School designed by Sanoff. Due to the limitation of space and time given to the task which is to design the open school for Keum Jeong Elementary School, the design method is proposed not as the direct participatory method but as the indirect one. The indirect participatory design for Keum Jeong Elementary School is performed by various fields' specialists consisted of practical architect, architectural theorist, and the one who is professionally interested in pedagogy, etc.

  • The multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of a launch vehicle (LV) with a hybrid rocket engine (HRE) was carried out to investigate the ability of an HRE for a single-stage LV. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) was employed to solve two design problems. The design problems were formulated as two-objective cases involving maximization of the downrange distance over the target flight altitude and minimization of the gross weight, for two target altitudes: 50.0 km and 100.0 km. Each objective function was empirically estimated. Several non-dominated solutions were obtained using the NSGA-II for each design problem, and in each case, a trade-off was observed between the two objective functions. The results for the two design problem indicate that economical performance of the LV is limited with the HRE in terms of the maximum downrange distances achievable. The LV geometries determined from the non-dominated solutions were examined.

  • The built environment of the elementary school influences on the character and the social skill of children in that childhood development stage. In this regard, sound environment in the elementary school is also important as the other environmental factors. Soundscape design is a design attitude for a better sound environment what landscape design targets a visual one. Four soundscape factors in elementary schools are extracted in this study from surveys on existing elementary schools. They are abstracted and characterized to related design patterns which denote the intended sound environments. The design patterns can be converted into design ideas and applied to an actual design project. There are possible advantages in the proposed elementary school design, environmentally and educationally, especially with the 'designed' soundscape.

  • Architectural utility in Richard Neutra's early twentieth century modern school design was paramount in progressively shaping salience of academic institutions, in part to move beyond neoclassical traditions in style based design. The intention being to address school and community through modern architectural solutions. Expanding on Neutra's practice, the planning and design of new public schools in Los Angeles, are advocating the integration of institutional and public spaces. This research will document through qualitative analysis of institutional design within transitioning neighborhoods, a utilitarian approach that has become foundational for positive urban change. The focus of this research will reflect upon contemporary schools designed by DalyGenik Architecture, Coop Himmelblau and Michael Maltzen Architecture. Comparing with Neutra's early modernist approach, the selected case studies will address material and spatial applications having redefined functional relationships of interior space, architectural envelope and an interconnected public realm. A dynamic peripheral condition in new school design has emerged with the elimination of decorative adornment, clarifying utilitarian intentions of institutional service to and the rejuvenation of public realms and community spaces.
